Glutened after surgey

Harvest Moon

Harvest Moon Newbie

Hi all, I'm looking for advice. I have been diagnosed a Celiac a year ago and just had a hysterectomy a few days ago. Day 2 home from the hospital I was glutened but didn't realize until day 6 and My insides are a mess. Didn't recognize my symptoms because of the narcotics. Now I'm just on ibroprofin but hard to take. My stomach is so raw and super tired. Anyone who knows the best way to heal my symptoms while regimented on ibroprofin? Is there something better to take after major surgery? Also going through caffeine whithdraw because I can't stomach coffee or tea now.

Hello Harvest Moon

Welcome to the forum.

I'm so sorry that you have experienced this.

Just a suggestion but please check it out first with a pharmacist or doctor.  I know a couple of people who have to take drugs of that ilk that upset their stomach.  I understand their doctors get them to take an omeprazole capsule/tab first, waiting for a bit before then taking their meds. I know that omeprazole has a lot of critics so please read up more about this, and get some proper medical advice.  Hopefully other people will chime in for a balanced picture.

A natural product that helped me when I went through a bad patch of what felt like gastritis but in fact I think was due to my ingesting gluten (unbeknown to me) was slippery elm.  I made it into a tea with hot water and it lined my stomach and was very soothing.  But again, please check this out with someone medically qualified to know if there are any contraindications.

Welcome to the forum, @linnylou73! Are you claiming this based on a reaction or based upon actual testing?

This varies a lot from person to person. I include foods that are not certified gluten-free but are labelled "gluten-free", while super sensitive people only use certified gluten-free. Both types of products have been found to contain gluten, so there are no guarantees either way: It you are in the super sensitive group, eating a whole foods based diet where you prepare everything is the safest bet, but it's also difficult. Eating out is the the most risky, even if a restaurant has a gluten-free menu. I also include items that are naturally gluten-free, for example refried beans, tuna, pasta sauces, salsas, etc., which have a low overall risk of contamination.

I avoid turmeric now because I'm on low dose aspirin, but used to use this one: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08HYBN4DJ My recipes always vary according to what I have on hand, but my base is a frozen berry mix from Trader Joe's: https://www.traderjoes.com/home/products/pdp/fruits-greens-smoothie-blend-075603 In the warmer months I include herbs from my garden like Italian parsley and basil. I add almond milk as well.
