Help, I Need Answers And I'm Scared

I have had problems with bloating for about 6 years. First I was told it was because I had fibroids, then a couple of years later my Dr. had me do an upper GI and told me I had acid reflux. Then in December my gas and bloating got so bad he ran some blood tests on me and a food allegy test came back and Jan 12th he told me I have an allergic reaction to wheat. The IgE shows .90 KU/L which states a moderate level.

He told me to go on a wheat free diet and he would have to do some research and call me (I'm still waiting). Since then I've found out about Celiac Disease. I also have hypothyroidism.

It seems to explain the bloating. I've been trying to cut all wheat, oats and barley and look for the hidden glucose in the ingredients but it seems so hard and overwelming! I felt better for a few days but then the bloating is back. I used taco seasoning today, Is there something in the spices? Does it take a while to feel relief, maybe I'm too anxious but the reason I'm scared is because all the sudden I feel aches and pains and I've lost about 5 lbs in the last two weeks.

Is it a common symtom to only have bloating with this?

Any help would be much appreciated!!

Also where can I get a list of all the safe name brands in the store?

Thanks!

Kirsten

Hi Kirsten- If you post your email I will send you the Delphi gluten free list which has 70 pages of information. Or if you don't want top post your email, email me at babrennanov@gmail.com and I'll send it to you. It could very well have been the taco seasonings- a lot of them have fillers that could contain gluten. For future reference, Mccormack's brand spices (including their seasoning packets for taco and chile) will clearly list any gluten ingredients. I am micro-sensitive and haven't had a problem with their taco or chili mix. but remember to ALWAYS read labels!

Bloating is VERY common with this as well as weight loss, acid reflux. I have had all 3. Hang in there, Beverly

Glucose is sugar. You can have glucose. It's just gluten that you can't have. Beware of the word MALT as well as wheat, oats, barley, rye, spelt, kamut... call and confirm the "source" of Modified Food Starch as it could be derived from a gluten containing source. I use the company, Kinnikinnick for all of my bread products.. There is a link below in my sig. Check your lip gloss for wheat germ oil, check your other bath products as well. Wheat free doesn't equal gluten free.

Hi Beverly,

Thank you for the info. My email address is honedo10@sbcglobal.net. I did use Mccormack's but maybe it was something else. I've felt bloated all day today so far, I made an appointment for tomorrow, I'm hoping he'll have more answers for me or can send me to a Gastroenterologist.

Opps, I meant gluten and typed glucose. Thanks for the info! I didn't know about Malt.

Kirsten,

I understand your concern. The thing that helped me the most in the beginning of this diet was to develop a plan. I tried to get a certain amount of naturally gluten free foods and stick to them for at least a couple of weeks to see how I responded. Although it seemed like I was eating a lot of the same things for breakfast and lunch, the intent was to make sure I did not ingest "any" gluten. I don't think I ate anything like tacos for the first few months. The most I varied my menu was during dinner. I would rotate the type of meat and few vegetables. I also kept a list of everything I ate and when I ate it. If it would help I think you should write down a sample menu for a week at a time and try to stick to it. I'm sure there were times when my wife thought I was paranoid because I would not try seasonings other than salt and pepper. Once again I wanted to be sure I was doing it right. In my case my body started to respond to the diet in only a few days. I no longer had the bloating, reflux, gas and diarrhea. The absence of these symptoms made sticking to the diet worthwhile. I understand now 9 months later that this diet was not overwhelming or hard. It was and still is only one thing to me and that is "inconvenient". The fact that I feel so much better physically is worth the inconvenience. Good luck to you.

Thanks for the advice. And here I was thinking I was paranoid. Your right I'll stick to the basics for a while. It will be so great to feel better!

Welcome to the forum, @Ben98! If you have been consciously or unconsciously avoiding gluten because of the discomfort it produces then it is likely that your blood antibody testing for celiac disease has been rendered invalid. Valid testing requires regular consumption of generous amounts of gluten. The other strong possibility is that you have NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity) which shares many of the same symptoms with celiac disease but does not have the autoimmune component and thus does not damage the small bowel lining. It is 10x mor common than celiac disease. There is currently no test for NCGS. Celiac disease must first be ruled out. Some experts in the field believe it can be a precursor to the development of celiac disease. Having one or both of the primary genes for developing celiac disease does not imply that you will develop active celiac disease. It simply establishes the potential for it. About 40% of the population has the genetic potential but only about 1% develop active celiac disease.

TTG blood test and total IGA tested on many occasions which have always remained normal, upper GI pain under my ribs since 2022. I had an endoscopy in 2023 which showed moderate gastritis. no biopsy’s were taken unfortunately. genetic test was positive for HLADQ2. extreme bloating after eating gluten, it’ll feel like I’ve got bricks in my stomach so uncomfortably full. the pain is like a dull ache under the upper left almost like a stitch feeling after a long walk. I am just wanting some advice has anyone here experienced gastritis with a gluten issue before? thank you

"Conclusions: The urinary iodine level was significantly lower in women with postmenopausal osteoporosis, and iodine replacement may be important in preventing osteoporosis"  Body iodine status in women with postmenopausal osteoporosis Low iodine can cause thyroid problems, but Iodine deficiency will not show up in thyroid tests.  Iodine is important for healing, its job is to kill off defective and aging cells (Apoptosis). Skin, brain fog, nails, muscle tone all inproved when I started taking 600 mcg (RDA 150 - 1000 mcg) of Liquid Iodine drops. Some with dermatitis herpetiformis, Iodine exacerbates the rash.  I started at 1 drop (50 mcg) and worked up to 12 drops, but I don't have dermatitis herpetiformis.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience and I found myself giggling with happiness as I read how your body reached such spring! And I hope that your current journey is also successful!! Definitely starting the food diary! So many amazing advices. And it’s very scary. It really hits all our soft spots as well as our confidence system. Most doctors I went thought I was underage despite being in my late 20s. Right now I look like am I twelve, but is also this body that’s taking so much, so I might as well love it too! Going to make the necessary changes and stay in this path. Thank you again! 🫶
