Fruit and coeliacs

I am relatively new to coeliacs and have avoided all the usual things but seem to have a reaction to some fruits. Are there any l have to avoid or is it trial and error?

I had to limit or skip many fruits for many years - my g.i. suggested I have fructose intolerance, but I have been able to successfully add most fruits back to my diet.  I think the amount of time your body is healing is a factor.  I couldn't eat raw veggies at first, but they were ok if I cooked the daylights out of them.  now, I can eat most raw vegetables, lettuce (weird) still gives me a little grief, but only if I eat it too close to bedtime?  (gooooo figurrrrre…….. lolz)

get you a food journal, and see what exactly is causing you distress, then add and/or subtract foods as you are able.  many intolerances may go away as your guts heal.

not to brag, but I can eat half an orange twice a week, now.  ;) I was not even able to look at citrus fruit a few years ago!!

As @notme! says the GI tract can be sorta touchy in the beginning while you heal. If you continue to have issues eating fruit a year from now you may have a sensitivity to something in fruit but for now it's probably just your GI tract being kinda beat up.

You may also have a similar reaction to lactose in dairy products for a while.

Perhaps you are reacting to the fruit, not with a gluten reaction.

Mushrooms are often grown on a gluteny substrate. Strawberries are prone to cross contamination due to wheat straw being used.

People pick up and examine fruit with gluten hands, so wash well or peel.

I’ve used tinctures and made my own edibles with gluten-free ingredients to stay safe. Dispensary staff don’t always know about gluten, so I double-check labels or just make my own.

It's great to hear that there are some good doctors out there, and this is an example of why having a formal diagnosis can definitely be helpful.

Update: I have a wonderful new gastroenterologist. She wants to be sure there’s nothing more serious, like refractory celiac, going on. She ordered various tests including some micronutrient tests that no one has ever ordered before.  I’m deficient in folate and zinc and starting supplements for both. I’m so glad I decided to go to a new GI!

Autoimmune diseases tend to cluster. Many of them are found close together on the chromosomes.

Just giving another update... I was referred to rheumatology, and they suspect that I may also be dealing with fibromyalgia (it has not been formally diagnosed, but just suggested at this point).  So, I am continuing with the anti-inflammatory diet and vitamins and still working to keep getting rid of all these hidden gluten sources, but I also do have another possible explanation for some of the issues that I'm dealing with.
