Bloating/Water Retention

Hello all, I am new here and had a question on Bloating/Water Retention: does anybody know how to get rid of it?

I got diagnosed with Celiac back in November and the first few weeks out the gate without gluten I was doing great, and my stomach had slimmed all the way back down to normal (coincidentally I lost over 12 lbs of pure bloat how fun!). but... I haven't been able to mimic it since, no matter what I try.... with the exception being 7-10 servings of Mira-lax "sometimes" helping.

I read that often times having one auto-immune disorder can lead to another, so perhaps something else is wrong but I am not sure. Has anybody here had thyroid issues with their celiac? My stomach, neck too, look bloated around the clock and it especially bloats up after drinking water (taking hot showers too oddly enough). Any ideas at all would help!

Could be a issue with the ratios of sodium, magnesium, and potassium. It could also be a inflammatory response to something else in your diet (Dairy, Soy, Legumes, Corn, or perhaps grains) or high sugar intake.

Try keeping a food diary, with an elimination diet.

It could be caused by a reaction to something in your diet.  Many celiacs develop food reactions beyond just wheat, rye and barley.  Your body can become sensitized to any food.  Also there is a small percentage of celiacs who react to oats just like they do to wheat, rye and barley.

One thing you can try is an elimination diet.  A good place to start is eliminating all the top 10 allergens.  If that solves the problem then wait 2 weeks and try adding one of those foods back in.  Wait 3 days and the try another food if there is no problem.

Great advice above. Check for other problems. I can also get triggered by environmental triggers too.

For bloat initially stay anti inflammatory whole foods. I blended a lot of my food in the beginning because I could not digest.

I found ginger water, dandelion tea, apple cider vinegar, and accupucture helpful as well.

Good luck

Good point, as thyroid conditions are more common in those with celiac disease: https://www.celiac.com/celiac-disease/celiac-disease-amp-related-diseases-and-disorders/thyroid-pancreatic-disorders-and-celiac-disease/

@DebD5 it sounds like you are in the super sensitive celiac disease zone--and if so your reactions are real, and not psychological, as your doctor implied.  It's also possible you have other dietary triggers so be sure to look at that article in my last post in this thread.

I would like to say you saved me. I’ve been so sick the last few years, celiac since 1997. And reading your post about the other glutens/grains that can be sensitive to celiacs, is the only thing that has ever helped me. Since going off a carbohydrates/grains, even gluten-free ones, My chronic pain is  85% better. I’m actually losing weight which, that’s a long story but was impossible. I definitely am like you. Thank you so very much for posting. For some of celiacs I do believe this is the magic key.
