Cessation of Periods

My daughter is 15 and was recently diagnosed after having weight loss and ceasing of menstrual cycles. Anyone else with teenage girls have this occur and did the periods return once going gluten free and nutrient absorption was restored?

Welcome to the forum, Charlia!

We see this often on the forum. I would strongly suggest you don't wait for her villi to rebound before putting her on some high end vitamins. It can take up to two years for the villi to completely heal after going gluten free.

Put her on an adult multi (like Centrum) and a B-complex. In addition to that I would also add in there a sublingual B12 and maybe even extra folate (aka, folic acid - the female vitamin). Is she experiencing anemia? If so add some iron until that is corrected. I know it sounds like a lot of stuff but the B-vitamins are water soluble so you can't overdose on them. You just pee out the excess. Make sure they are gluten free. Costco's Nature Made brand of vitamins and supplements are a good choice.

She is not anemic. She is on a gluten free teen multi vitamin per her ped gi. He did say the menstrual cycle will be basically the last thing to normalize.. She is gaining weight in just a little less than a month of being gluten free. I am hoping that is a good sign.

Low weight can cause periods to stop.  I bet your daughter’s will come back when she gains some weight.

@Charlia Daisey,

Does your daughter have low Vitamin D?

All her other labs were ok…

Hi,

My daughter was 17 when she was diagnosed with Celiac. She had lost close to 20 pounds when this all started and her periods stopped. Even after going gluten free, it took her a while to get her weight back up to a normal BMI. But once she was there, her periods have restarted.  If all the other labs are ok (vitamin panels, no anemia, etc) your daughter's period will probably come back.

Thank you for the response. Do you know how long it took for the periods to come back? I know everyone heals differently…

It took her awhile to gain weight, so it was just about 2 years.

      That means the normal range (i.e. not celiac disease) would be a result less than 14.99.  Your result is WAY above that. Some gastroenterologists would diagnose that as celiac disease even without a confirming biopsy because it is more than ten times the top of the normal range.

      Hi everyone. Back in 2022 I had blood work drawn for iga ext gliadin. Since then I’ve developed worse stomach issues and all other health issues. My doctor just said cut out gluten. He did no further testing. Please see my test results attached. I just need some direction cause I feel so ill and the stomach pain is becoming worse. Can this test show indications for other gastrointestinal diseases?

      Thank you. These were the results TTG ABS NUMERICAL: > 250.0 U/mL [< 14.99]  Really don’t understand the results!

      Clearly from what you've said the info on Dailymed is much more up to date than the other site, which hasn't been updated since 2017. The fact that some companies might be repackaging drugs does not mean the info on the ingredients is not correct.

      To evaluate the TTG antibody result we’d need to know the normal range for that lab.  Labs don’t all use the same units.  However, based on any normal ranges that I’ve seen and the listed result being greater than a number rather than a specific number, I’d say yes, that is high! Higher than the range where the test can give a quantitative result. You got good advice not to change your diet yet.  If you went gluten free your intestines would start to heal, confusing any further testing,
