Weight loss. Why?

Hi everyone!

Background, I was diagnosed with celiac disease about 8 years ago. I have since become more and more sensitive to the cross contamination end. Because of that I am VERY careful. So here is the problem….I have lost a total of 26 pounds in a 5 mo period (not complaining at all) It’s held steady for about a month now. But nowhere at any time did I change anything about diet and exercise. Just trying to find someone that may have a similar experience or maybe could answer why.
**ps I plan to see the Dr ***

Welcome to the forum, @Meg80!

Would you give us an idea of what type of foods you eat?  Do you eat processed gluten free facsimile foods? Whole foods?

What type of exercise do you do?  How often?  Intensity?

When was the last time you got glutened?  What do you think was cross contaminated that made you sick?

Well as far as my diet, I cook most everything. I don’t eat out (very rarely), not to many processed things.
Activity, well I’m a nurse so I’m always on my feet, plus I’m in school. So not a whole lot of time for exercise.

I honestly can’t tell you, most often I don’t eat during the day. I eat mainly after work in the evenings, but I don’t limit anything. That has always been though. I’m on meds that cause me to have no appetite.

the last cross contamination was last summer. Very bad reaction. Been even more careful since.

so nothing has changed. So I don’t know why I’m losing

Which meds are you on that cause no appetite?  Some medications can interfere with vitamin absorption.

Check out Mast Cell Activation Syndrome.  In Celiac disease mast cells multiply and become hypersensitive and degranulate easily.  Thiamine supplementation can help with mast cell regulation.

Celiac people can become vitamin deficient easily, considering malabsorption and dietary limitations.  Checking for nutritional deficiencies is part of proper follow up care for Celiac people. Supplementing with B Complex, Thiamine and magnesium would help.

You may want to talk to a nutritionist about your diet and see if there's a way to get more nutrients into you throughout the day.

Thank you, didn’t think about that. I am sure the Dr will do blood work and we will see. Thank you

A confirmed diagnosis of refractory coeliac disease is required to participate in the study unfortunately. Apologies you are feeling miserable even though you have remained gluten-free, I hope you are able to receive further understanding as to why from the relevant medical professional. I am hoping to provide copies of the content used in this study following its completion end of this year so will make a note to post on here when the study is complete, a copy of the resources used from the group.

Do you think it’s a vitamin issue that could make celiac symptoms worse during recovery ?

Multivitamin products are seldom potent to offset the vitamin and mineral deficiencies that typically result from long term undiagnosed celiac disease. We commonly recommend sublingual B12, a B-complex 5-10k IU of D3, 400 mg daily of magnesium glycinate, and zinc picolinate. The forms of certain vitamins like magnesium and zinc are important since it has a significant impact on absorbability. If you live near a Costco, the Kirkland Signature series and Nature Made lines are good quality choices and economical. And they will indicate on the packaging if they are gluten free.

Are you addressing possible/probable vitamin and mineral deficiencies through some serious supplementation?
