My Gp said we will treat me as Coeliac due to this coming back as detected. The other three alleles were not detected. Vitamin D is 20 (I'm in Australia, ferritin undetectable, iron was 4 (I'm vegetarian) and B22 was low but improving significantly with oral B12. He said because I went off gluten as a result of having tingling and numb feet and diminished nerve conduction tests, I could have a gastroscopy after going back into gluten for 4 weeks (I thought it's meant to be 6). He said or we can assume I'm coeliac and just follow gluten free. With these results, do you think it's likely that I am coeliac?  Is it worth doing the gluten challenge?  I also have hashimotos. And low neutrophils but he doesn't think that's related.

Hi suzi375

I'm not familiar with your other conditions, but I would say Go for the tests. Get a definite diagnosis once & for all. You can't spend the rest of your life in limbo like this. You need to know for sure in order for you to plan your life better.

Good luck on your journey

Thank you. I think for my children it will be useful and also to assist in sticking to being gluten free it may be useful. It is a bit of limbo actually. I have had a myriad or uncomfortable, weird symptoms for four years. FINALLY, this may be an answer. That is actually a relief, I just wish they did the antibodies before I went off gluten :(

Suzi374 I'm glad I was of some help. I've children as well & I know it's frustrating for the whole family when one member is ill with an undiagnosed condition. Definitely get them on board. Education & communication is key to you being successful.

A confirmed diagnosis of refractory coeliac disease is required to participate in the study unfortunately. Apologies you are feeling miserable even though you have remained gluten-free, I hope you are able to receive further understanding as to why from the relevant medical professional. I am hoping to provide copies of the content used in this study following its completion end of this year so will make a note to post on here when the study is complete, a copy of the resources used from the group.

Do you think it’s a vitamin issue that could make celiac symptoms worse during recovery ?

Multivitamin products are seldom potent to offset the vitamin and mineral deficiencies that typically result from long term undiagnosed celiac disease. We commonly recommend sublingual B12, a B-complex 5-10k IU of D3, 400 mg daily of magnesium glycinate, and zinc picolinate. The forms of certain vitamins like magnesium and zinc are important since it has a significant impact on absorbability. If you live near a Costco, the Kirkland Signature series and Nature Made lines are good quality choices and economical. And they will indicate on the packaging if they are gluten free.

Are you addressing possible/probable vitamin and mineral deficiencies through some serious supplementation?
