I was tested negative for celiac disease by Prometheus, but I wonder if I might have gluten intolerance. What is the best way to find out? Thanks. My only symptom is neurological.

Hey Jen M. !

I'm being followed by a doctor, my blood tests are negative, and I have the neurological issues too. I get a reversal of peripheral neuropathy after a couple of gluten free days.

According to

Open Original Shared Link

this abstract on Pub Med, it has been suggested that neurological symptoms can be present from gluten sensitivity WITH or WITHOUT verifiable intestinal damage.

This would be interesting, as the small bowel biopsy has long been the gold standard of diagnosis.

It is good to work with a doctor if you can find someone sympathetic and reasonable. But if eating the right way makes you better, you know what to do.

Thanks for the reply and links, Matilda. The print-outs will be very helpful to take to my neurologist at UCLA. I have no history of celiac disease, or any kind of allergy or intolerance in my family, and I have been tall and skinny all my life, so my doctor might see any further gluten testing pointless. She organized the Celiac panel with Prometheus, and all the results were negative. I did stay on a gluten-free diet for a while anyway, but nothing changed. Thanks again for all the great info and good wishes.

Thanks to Mme, too.

They may want to also eliminate other possible causes for your symptoms/issues and are doing additional tests.  Here is info about blood tests for celiac disease--if positive an endoscopy where biopsies of your intestinal villi are taken to confirm is the typical follow up.

In the Europe the new protocol for making a celiac disease diagnosis in children is if their tTg-IgA (tissue transglutaminase IgA) levels are 10 times or above the positive level for celiac disease--and you are above that level. According to the latest research, if the blood test results are at certain high levels that range between 5-10 times the reference range for a positive celiac disease diagnosis, it may not be necessary to confirm the results using an endoscopy/biopsy: Blood Test Alone Can Diagnose Celiac Disease in Most Children and Adults TGA-IgA at or Above Five Times Normal Limit in Kids Indicates Celiac Disease in Nearly All Cases No More Biopsies to Diagnose Celiac Disease in Children! May I ask why you've had so many past tTg-IgA tests done, and many of them seem to have been done 3 times during short time intervals?

@JettaGirl, "Coeliac" is the British spelling of "celiac". Same disease.

This may sound ridiculous but is this supposed to say Celiacs? I looked up Coeliacs because you never know, there’s a lot of diseases related to a disease that they come up with similar names for. It’s probably meant to say Celiacs but I just wanted to confirm.

I was told it was to see how much damage has been caused. But just told CT with contrast not any other name for it.
