Hi Everyone,

Do anyone have a reaction to canola oil.? And what kind of oils are you all cooking with.? I had a terrible reaction the other day and don't know what it was from. I guess I need to keep a food diary for now on. I also had eaten a bag of rice chips BBQ--boy were they goooooood. It said gluten free on the bag but maybe i ate to much. Spent most of the night in the bathroom. Any info would be great. Appreciate everyones support

I can't be 100% sure, but I might react to canola oil. I've certainly reacted to a number of home-cooked meals that should have been gluten-free and contained canola oil. Come to think of it, I still have a bottle of canola oil and could drizzle some on Bush's baked beans to test it! I have never yet reacted to the beans, so if I have a reaction it should be from the oil. Now, I have switched to grapeseed oil when I want a flavorless oil. I use extra-virgin olive oil wherever I can, though!

Have you contacted the manufacturer of the rice chips to discuss potential cross-contamination?

Along those lines, I had a disheartening experience with Utz's potato chips yesterday. I wasn't paying very close attention to my three-and-a-half year old, and he got into the pantry and ate three snack-size bags of chips before I noticed. He was even nice, and shared some with his little brother! Later in the evening, I found the third bag in his bedroom and finished off the last few chips. Then I read the boys a story. Then I thought, why did my stomach just start aching mildly? Well, I decided I was imagining things and went to bed. This morning I had a new pimple on my chin (which suggests gluten or dairy consumption for me), my baby's stools were loose (but not particularly foul-smelling), and my older boy had diarrhea. I still didn't want to believe it was gluten-related, but then the baby couldn't stay asleep at naptime (a sign of gluten trouble for him). Sigh. I am still not sure what to think, since the chip manufacturer claims that their chips are as safe as any processed food could possibly be ("We've been telling people for five years that our chips are gluten-free, and no one has contradicted us yet!"). I suppose it could be a problem with the cottonseed oil they're fried in, maybe...but then why couldn't the baby stay asleep? I'm frustrated, because I really like this brand of potato chip. I don't eat them often at all, but I don't want to have to give them up forever!

Well, I'm sorry to have rambled on. I hope you can pin down the cause of your trouble quickly!

When I cook I use extra virgin olive oil with no reaction!!

I've had reactions from canola before!!

People (even here) think I'm mistaken, but long ago I read about canola being grown in fallow wheat fields. I think it's a cross-contamination issue....

Anyway, we won't touch it!!

We use olive oil, corn oil, and sunflower oil (my favorite)--and butter.

I buy products made with cotton seed oil, safflower oil, and peanut oil with no problems.

Are you talking about lundenberg farm bbq rice chips? I used to eat those all the time and never reacted to those (though that doesn't mean much). Then I noticed that I seemed sensitive to corn, and being that those chips are mostly corn, I had to stop eating them..... Not that this information helps much, but I wouldn't place my bets on gluten being in those chips......

I stopped using Canola Oil because I read on mercola.com that when it is heated up, it becomes terrible for you. In fact, the only oil that is safe to use for high heat cooking is coconut oil. Olive oil is fantastic raw (virgin - unprocessed oil) but once you heat it, it can become carcinogenic or at the very least, lose its goodness.

Coconut oil, of course, tastes like coconuts, and on some things, is really distracting, like on sweetpotato fries. But it actually tastes really good for frying salmon.

Anyway, I heard Canola is bad for you, so even if it is not the culprit, it's not the best choice for cooking either. Good luck!

I use both canola oil and olive oil, reacting to neither. But everyone is different.

I use canola oil and olive oil and I have not had any problems either. Could it be a reaction to any other products that you are using?

      @catnapt,  Wheat germ contains high amounts of lectins which are really hard to digest and can be irritating to the digestive tract.  They can stimulate IgG antibody production as your blood test shows.   Even beans have lectins.  You've simply eaten too many lectins and irritated your digestive tract.   You may want to allow your digestive tract to rest for a week, then start on gluten in "normal" food, not in concentrated vital wheat gluten.       I take Now B-1 (100 mg) Thiamine Hydrochloride, and Amazing Formulas L-Tryptophan (1000 mg).   Both are gluten free and free of other allergens.  I've taken them for a long time and haven't had a problem with them. I take Vitamin A from BioTech called "A-25".  It's gluten and allergen free and made in the USA.  It's a powder form of Vitamin A.  I was having trouble digesting fats at one point, but found I tolerated the powder form much better and have stuck with it since.   Tryptophan and Vitamin A help heal the intestines as well as improves skin health.  I get Dermatitis Herpetiformis and eczema flairs when my stomach is upset.  So I'm healing the outside as well as the inside.   I take one 1000 mg Tryptophan before bedtime.   With the Thiamine HCl, take 100 mg to start.  If you don't notice anything, three hours later take another. You can keep increasing your dose in this manner until you do notice improvement.  Remember not to take it in the evening so it won't keep you too energized to sleep. When I first started Thiamine HCl, taking 500 mg to 1000 mg to start was recommended.  If you've been thiamine insufficient for a while, you do notice a big difference.  It's like the start of a NASCAR race: Zoom, Zoom, turn it up!   This scared or made some people uncomfortable, but it's just your body beginning to function properly, like putting new spark plugs in your engine.  I took 1000 mg all at once without food.  It kicked in beautifully, but I got a tummy ache, so take with food.  I added in Thiamine TTFD and Benfotiamine weeks later and felt like I was Formula One racing.  So cool.  You may feel worse for a couple days as your body adjusts to having sufficient thiamine.  Feels sort of like you haven't cranked your engine for a while and it backfires and sputters, but it will settle down and start purring soon enough.  Adjust your dose to what feels right for you, increasing your dose as long as you feel improvement.  You can reach a plateau, so stay there for several days, then try bumping it up again.  If no more improvements happen, you can stay at the plateau amount and experiment with increasing your Thiamine TTFD.  It's like being your own lab rat.  LoL Yes, take one Benfotiamine at breakfast and one at lunch.  Take the B Complex at breakfast. Take the TTFD at breakfast and lunch as well.  I like to take the vitamins at the beginning of meals and the NeuroMag at the end of meals.   You may want to add in some zinc.  I take Thorne Zinc 30 mg at breakfast at the beginning of the meal.   Are you getting sufficient Omega Threes?  Our brains are made up mostly of fat.  Flaxseed oil supplements, sunflower seed oil supplements (or eat the seeds themselves) can improve that.  Cooking with extra virgin olive oil, avocado oil, or coconut oil is also helpful.   @Wheatwacked likes phosphotidyl choline supplements for his Omega Threes.  He's also had dramatic health improvement by supplementing thiamine.  You're doing great!  Thank you for sharing your journey with us.  This path will smooth out.  Keep going!

      good luck! vital wheat gluten made me violently ill. I will touch the stuff ever again.

      I wouldn't consider this lucky. I can NOT tolerate the symptoms. And I googled it and I was not even getting 10 grams of gluten per day and I was extremely ill. They'd have to put me in the hospital. I'm not kidding.   I will have my first appt with a GI dr on March 4th   I will not eat gluten again - at least not on purpose   they are going to have to come up with a test that doesn't require it.

      What Thiamine Hydrochloride brand do you take? Is it like the other vitamins I have added? What brand Tryptophan and amount do you take. Thanks
