Hmmmm, Different Problems Now...

So the last too weeks I had the big D and when I didn't have that, I was going multiple times a day, like 5..

Now suddenly I have almost the opposite problem. I'm only going like every other day and I'm fairly

constipated. What's up with that? No diet change. Still eating whatever and yes plenty of gluten.

Is this consistent with celiac disease and or what else could it be.

Jerry, it certainly is consistent with celiac disease. Before I had chronic D last summer, I used to have alternating D and constipation. And I mean for a long time, in fact, most of my life.

I had a mix...few days diareha, few days constipated.....anoying!

Yep - if I consume gluten regularly, I have C. Single events of gluten, spaced out over months, cause D for me. But prior to diagnosis, it was C.

It's very annoying. I can understand the D, but why the constipation? Any ideas on that?

CarlaB Enthusiast

No ideas on it, but I sure get it alternating with d. I hate it, I always go to Starbucks and drink a venti coffee to get things moving again!!!

[ I was diagnosed as a baby went off the diet because they said -diet 2 years. Normal until about a year or so ago. Then D. I can't tell you how may times I had the plumber out here because I thought it was the toilet not flushing!!!LOL The poor guy worked on that toilet all the time. Since I don't have the pain and cramps and constipation, does that mean I'm not too messed up? LindaLee

Oats naturally contain a protein called avenin, which is similar to the gluten proteins found in wheat, barley, and rye. While avenin is generally considered safe for most people with celiac disease, some individuals, around 5-10% of celiacs, may also have sensitivity to avenin, leading to symptoms similar to gluten exposure. You may fall into this category, and eliminating them is the best way to figure this out. Some people substitute gluten-free quinoa flakes for oats if they want a hot cereal substitute. If you are interested in summaries of scientific publications on the topic of oats and celiac disease, we have an entire category dedicated to it which is here: https://www.celiac.com/celiac-disease/oats-and-celiac-disease-are-they-gluten-free/
