Help .. How Do I Know When To Stop Seizure Meds ?

I am so confused .... I reduced my Klonopin from .5 mg to .0625 mg (appr. since I am splitting the pills) over a two month period because it was making me feel completely drugged. Then two days ago, I tried to stop it completely, but had tremours so bad I had to take it again. I couldn't sleep either.

The problem is that I don't know if I got gluttened and that is why I felt so crappy. Or if I had withdrawal symptoms and I just need to stay on the reduced dosage. .0625 is such a small amount. Can it really be necessary to take it ? Do celiacs, after they have eliminated the gluten, respond to a much lower dose than most people ?

I had a few restless nites while going down on the dosage, but this is the first time I had tremours or felt wide awake all nite. Each time I reduced my dosage, I felt better and slept 7 - 9 hours within 3 days. And within a few days started feeling drugged again.

Also, I am wondering how much of this is psychological ? <_<

How did those of you who were having seizures or myoclonous know when it was safe to stop taking your meds ? I've only been gluten-free for 9 months, so maybe it is too early still.

It is entirely possible that I got gluttened from dry roasted peanuts at Wild Oats.

Thanks ... Marcia

Marcia, you're right, you could have been glutened by the peanuts. But it could also be that it was withdrawal symptoms. I know that the amount of medication you were taking was very small. But would you be able to split that in half again, and take an even smaller amount for a while? You might need to do that before going entirely off the meds.

In my opinion, now that your villi are healing, your body is taking up a lot more of the medication than before going gluten-free, and might get as much medication out of half a pill now, as it did from the whole pill before.

Also, it takes usually longer than nine months to completely heal after going gluten-free, and you may not be ready to be completely off your meds. So, try cutting it in half again, and see what happens. If that works, stay on that dose for a couple of months and try going without again.

I hope you work it out!

Ursula,

Love the picture of you and the baby. :D

I'm sorry to see that you have been through a lot of illness too. I love that we have figured this out and wish others could too. Are you better or still making progress ?

I am down to 1/8 of a tablet, but I guess I can find a way to reduce that even if I have to bite it off. :P

Thanks, Zoey is a sweetie for sure!

I am still getting better, and may never be entirely well. 52 years of damage is a lot. But I am a lot better than I was a year ago! And I am off all pain killers (except for having to take one maybe once every three weeks or so, when I have eaten something wrong).

Well, rather than biting it off, you could just crush it and put some of that powder in a spoonful of applesauce? That might be the easiest way.

marciab Enthusiast

That's great that you are off of your pain meds. Were you able to stop them all at once or did you have to wean off of them ? It's exciting to watch the progress, I just wish it was quicker. :D

Good tip, I will try crushing it and putting it in applesauce.

Figuring out which foods are causing non digestive issues is so tricky. I figured out the "D" and "C", cramping, etc related to wheat quickly, but the other symptoms are so much harder for me to pin down.

I had forgotten that my stomach has been a little torn up for the last 3 days so I probably got ahold of something else that didn't agree with me. I tried raw goat cheese this past week. <_<

I am 50 also, so we have been at this a long time. Hope we will both feel better soon. :D

I went off the Klonipin about a week ago because it has corn it it. I noticed my tremors got worse and that I could not get a good nights sleep for several nights. But, this all passed. I was on the .5 also and had to quit it cold turkey. Good Luck.

Ursa Major Collaborator

Good for you, Armetta! That should give Marcia some hope, I'm sure.

Marcia, I was on 50 mg of codeine contin (12-hour-release) twice a day for four years, and often had to take 100mg at night (which was permitted). That just took the edge off the pain, barely enough to function. Many times I had to supplement that with extra strength Tylenol, when the pain got too bad (it was everywhere, but especially in my legs and back, but sometimes my hands and forearms would ache so badly I felt like screaming).

I just quit cold turkey, with no withdrawal symptoms whatsoever. The reason for that is, that with people with chronic pain, painkillers go straight to the pain receptors in the brain, and won't cause addiction. Studies have been done to prove that, and I am living proof that it's true.

I tried goat cheese a while ago, too, and it didn't seem to be a very good idea.

It looks like we have a lot in common. There aren't too many older people here.

I had been taking 0.25mg Rivoltril (Klonopin) for 18 years ever since I had a brain cyst removed. The Rivotril was to stop excess eye movements that had resulted from the cyst. On the advise of my Endo. who didn't think that such a small dose would be doing any good I weaned myself off it 18 months ago.

The resulting health issues were subtle but debilitating. Loss of balance, confusion, tiredness, fatigue etc. My GP then put me back on the Rivotril and I haven't looked back. Obviously the brain cyst has still has an effect on my neuro system and the drug even in such a small dose makes a difference.

Maybe your body is telling you that it can't function effectively at the moment without the Klonopin.

Ruth.

Armetta,

That's great that you could stop cold turkey like that. It definitely gives me hope. Are you still ok ? How long had you been on the Klonopin ?

I'm afraid that since I have been on Klonopin / a seizure med for about 16 years now, my body may not be able to function without this med.

I didn't realize Klonopin has corn in it. I am just using a generic, so I am not sure what all is in it.

Ursula,

Did you try the raw cheddar goat cheese ? I heard it was less offensive to sensitive stomachs. The first few bites were heaven. I had a bunless buffalo cheese burger. :) I've backed off it to see if it is causing problems though. I have the feeling those peanuts need to go too. They taste too much like Planters dry roasted peanuts.

Ruth,

That's what I am thinking. <_< Unfortunately the only way to find out is to try to stop taking it. If it turns out that I need it that's ok too as long as I am not feeling drugged from it. I'm sorry to hear that you had a brain cyst. Is everything ok now ?

Thank you all for replying. I'm not sure how much of what I am feeling is just anxiety and it helped just to hear others experiences.

Well ... drum roll please ..........

I stopped taking Klonopin Friday nite and have been seizure free for about a week. No jerking at all during the day either. :D:D

I am so excited and yet scared at the same time. Is it going to last ??

I have been using chamomile tea to calm my nerves at nite so I would stop freaking out about not taking a sleep / seizure med. And keeping the tv on so if I did wake up, I would be distracted by it.

Can any of you who have had nocturnal myoclonous or seizures can relate to this ? <_<

I'm also worried that I am not sleeping deep enough to keep my fibro pain from coming back. How long do you think I have to wait before I can be sure that I'm not going to start jerking again ?

Thanks Marcia

Me too. I felt terrible every time I tried to reduce the dosage when my body wasn't ready. I had to go up and down on it several times during the last month just to stop the jittery feelings.

I was hanging in there at 1/16 of a tablet forever.

Now, I am a little jumpy, but I can live with it. At least I am not jerking :D:D:D

Welcome to the club ... What are your birthday plans ? We went on a cruise, but I was on the elimination diet and really couldn't enjoy it as much as I should have. Still, it was nice to get away. :)

Were you taking it for seizures ?

Some interesting articles regarding the use of Zinc Carnosine to help heal gastric ulcers, gastritis and intestinal permeability. I would consult a medical professional about it's use. https://www.nature.com/articles/ncpgasthep0778 https://www.rupahealth.com/post/clinical-applications-of-zinc-carnosine---evidence-review https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC7146259/ https://www.fallbrookmedicalcenter.com/zinc-l-carnosine-benefits-dosage-and-safety/

He is. Which makes everything even more difficult. I’m not a believer in “staying for the kids” but I have nowhere to go and it’s not just me, it’s me plus my babies. We live in a beautiful place, lots of land in the country and me and the kids love the place we’ve called home for their entire lives. But Im seeing that he’ll never change, that my kids deserve a happy healthy Momma, and that staying in this as is will be the early death of me. Then I look at the scars covering my entire body…this disease and the chronic stress I’ve been enduring for years that tell me I’m no longer beautiful and no one will ever look at me with interest again. I try self care, try to give myself grace so I can just start loving myself enough to gain strength but the slightest sparkle in my eye and skip in my step attracts his wrath and it all comes crashing ten fold. Life is just absolutely railing me from every single direction leaving me wanting to wave that white flag bc I don’t feel like there’s much hope no matter what happens.

Hi, I was recently diagnosed with Celiac and dermatitis herpetiformis after years of suffering without answers. I lost my mind. I lost my job. I lost so much time. I lost Me. Conventional doctors are opulent come near me and the one who did sat across the room, misdiagnosed me, pumped me full of steroids which collapsed my entire hip for 6 months. So without answers I began my holistic journey. Fast forward a couple of years and still struggling with a mysterious whole body itchy, crawling “skin hell”, perfect teeth now deteriorating, thick hair now thinning rapidly and no more than a day or 2 at most relief….An acquaintance opened up a functional medicine practice. Cash only, I found a way. Within a month tests clearly showing my off the charts gluten allergy/sensitivity as well as the depletion of vital nutrients due to leaky gut and intestinal damage. dermatitis herpetiformis was more than likely what I was experiencing with my skin. I was happy. I thought this is easy, eat healthy Whole Foods, follow the diet restrictions and I finally get to heal and feel confident and like myself again very soon! 😔 Supplements are very pricey but I got them and began my healing. Which leads to the other major issue: not working, stay at home Mom of young kids, entirely financially dependent on my man of 7 plus years. He’s never been supportive of anything I’ve ever done or been thru. He controls everything. I’m not given much money ever at a time and when he does leave money it’s only enough to possibly get gas. His excuse is that I’ll spend it on other things. So my “allowance” is inconsistent and has conditions. He withholds money from me as punishment for anything he wants. Since being diagnosed, he’s gained a new control tactic to use as punishment. He now is in control of when I get to eat. He asked for proof of my diagnosis and diet bc he said I made it up just to be able to eat expensive organic foods. Then after I sent him my file from my doctor he then said she wasn’t a real doctor. 😡. I go days upon days starving, sometimes breaking down and eating things I shouldn’t bc I’m so sick then I pay horribly while he gets annoyed and angry bc I’m not keeping up with all the duties I’m supposed to be doing. His abuse turns full on when I’m down and it’s in these desperate times when I need his support and care the most that I’m punished with silence, being starved, ignored, belittled. He will create more of a mess just bc I’m unable to get up and clean so that when I am better, I’m so overwhelmed with chores to catch up that the stress causes me to go right back into a flare from hell and the cycle repeats. I’m punished for being sick. I’m belittled for starving and asking for healthy clean water. I’m purposely left out of his life. He won’t even tell me he’s going to the grocery or to get dinner bc he doesn’t want me to ask him for anything. I have no one. I have nothing. Im not better. My supplements ran out and I desperately need Vitamin D3 and a methylated B complex at the very minimal just to function….he stares at me blankly…no, a slight smirk, no words. He’s happiest when im miserable and I am miserable.  this is so long and im condensing as much as I can but this situation is so complicated and disgusting. And it’s currently my life. The “IT” girl, the healthy, beautiful, perfect skin, perfect teeth, thick and curly locks for days, creative and talented IT girl….now I won’t even leave this house bc Im ashamed of what this has dont to my body, my skin. Im disgusted. The stress is keeping me from healing and I think he knows that and that’s why he continues to keep me in that state. He doesn’t want me confident or successful. He doesn’t want me healed and healthy bc then how would he put the blame of all his problems on me? This journey has been hell and I’ve been in Hell before. I’ve been killed by an ex, I’ve been raped, robbed, held hostage, abused beyond nightmares but the cruelty I’ve experienced from him bc of this disease is the coldest I’ve ever experienced. I’ve wanted to give up. Starving and in tears, desperate…I found a local food pantry in our small town so I reached out just saying I had Celiac and was on hard times. This woman is blessing me daily with prepared gluten free meals, donations, educational info, people who know this disease and how they manage life and the blessings just keep coming. But it’s overwhelming and I feel like I don’t deserve it at all. He just glared and I know he’s going to sabotage it somehow. I don’t even know what to do anymore. I’m so broken and just want peace and healing.

@Colleen H   I am just curious,  when you were tested for coeliac disease, did the doctors find out if you had any deficiencies? Sometimes muscle pain can be caused by certain deficiencies, for example, magnesium, vitamin D, calcium, and potassium.   Might be worth looking into having some more tests.  Pins and needles can be neuropathy, again caused by deficiencies, such as iron and B12,  which can be reversed if these deficiencies are addressed. In the UK where I live we are usually only tested for iron, B12 and vitamin D deficiencies at diagnosis.   I was very iron anemic and supplementation made a big difference.  B12 was low normal, but in other countries the UK's low normal would be considered a deficiency.  My vitamin D was low normal, and I've been supplementing ever since (when I remember to take it!) My pins and needles definitely started to improve when my known deficiencies were addressed.  My nutritionist also gave me a broad spectrum supplement which really helped, because I suspect I wasn't just deficient in what I mention above but in many other vitamins and minerals.  But a word of warning, don't take iron unless blood tests reveal you actually need it, and if you are taking it your levels must be regularly monitored because too much can make you ill.  (And if you are currently taking iron, that might actually be making your stomach sore - it did mine, so my GP changed my iron supplementation to a gentler form, ferrous gluconate). Lastly, have you been trying to take anything to lessen the pain in your gut?  I get a sore stomach periodically, usually when I've had too much rich food, or when I have had to take an aspirin or certain antibiotics, or after glutening.  When this happens, I take for just a few days a small daily dose of OTC omeprazole.  I also follow a reflux or gastritis diet. There are lots online but the common denominators to these diets is you need to cut out caffeine, alcohol, rich, spicy, acidic food etc and eat small regularly spaced meals.   When I get a sore stomach, I also find it helpful to drink lots of water.  I also find hot water with a few slices of ginger very soothing to sip, or camomile tea.  A wedge pillow at night is good for reflux. Also,  best not to eat a meal 2-3 hours before going to bed. If the stomach pain is getting worse, though, it would be wise to see the doctor again. I hope some of this helps. Cristiana
