i dont know if this has been posted yet, I found it on another celiac website.

06/28/06

The new formulated Adult Centrum Chewables and Centrum Kids Complete have wheat in them, listed as “Mannitol”.

Regular Adult Centrum (not chewable), Centrum Silver (regular and chewables) and Centrum Performance don’t list Mannitol nor wheat in these products.

If you wish to voice a complaint about adding Mannitol to some of their vitamins, call 1-877-CENTRUM or www.centrum.com

I was told on Sat. by a rep. from a Celiac Awareness website that Mannitol is sugar so it seems as though the makers of Centrum do not even know what is and is not gluten. She does not think the product in question actually contains gluten.

If they know so little about nutrition, how can they make vitamins? Glucose, gluten, I mean, what's the difference  I get that all the time, "Oh, this doesn't have sugar!"

that is what i was thinking. I am going to call Centrum tomorrow and find out the niddy griddy on their gluten content!

I don't take Centrum anymore but when I was dx'd I was taking the reg. multivitamin. When I called them to check on the gluten-free status of that item they made me read everything on the bottle and then told me I could not have it. Then they called back an hour later to say that I could have it and they were sorry for the confusion. I kept taking it until I had to start a bunch of other supplements. They sent me $5 in coupons which I still have not used.

If a Celiac person is successful in following a gluten-free diet, they can go into remission.   They may not have a reaction to gluten without a precipitating event like an injury or infection or even emotional or mental stress.   Following a strict gluten-free diet at home, then indulging in gluten containing products abroad without a reaction can be explained by this remission.

Approximately 10x more people have non-celiac gluten sensitivity than have celiac disease, but there isn’t yet a test for NCGS. If your symptoms go away on a gluten-free diet it would likely signal NCGS.

Hi Theresa,  A few of my friends have your same story. You may be right about barley, etc.  18 years ago at a football game while clapping, suddenly my 4th finger was in agony.  It looked like a vein had burst. It was blue for a couple hours, then disappeared.  Finally realized it happened every time when drinking beer.  It's occurred several times over the years when opening a jar, lifting something that was a bit heavy, holding on to tight to something.  Immediate icing stops the pain and discoloration.  Now avoiding wheat in the US, it rarely happens.  Thanks for the reminder.  Will have Entero Labs run another test. Unfortunately they've relocated to Switzerland/Greece.
