Have I Glutened Myself Or Is It Pms?

I have been gluten-free for a little bit over a month. (yay me!)

Overall, I feel much better. That underlying, constant pain in the bottom of my gut is mostly gone. My headaches have lessened, but who knows what that's related to. I also seem to be in a much better mood!

Anyways, along with this whole gluten thing, I was also having menstrual issues - it wouldn't stop. I would usually get about two weeks off a month, and then spotting turned to heavy spotting turned to a nice long and early period. My OB took me off the pill until my body re-regulates itself.

Anyways, the last week or so, I have been RAVENOUS. I just can't seem to stop eating. And then the whole mood swing is up and down, as well. My lower gut has also been hurting more than not - which it shouldn't with the gluten-free. Very traditional PMS.

So could my menstrual cycle just be so insanely out of whack that I'm stuck in a week+ of delicious, face-feeding PMS? Am I accidentally glutening myself with stuff I thought was safe? Or is there some other irritating intolerance that is waiting in the shadows?

For those of you that do have multiple intolerances, how did you discover this? Did you notice an improvement after going gluten-free, and then everything got worse again? Or only after you ate said food?

Why do I feel like crap this morning? I just can't seem to find any pattern.

I am absolutely grasping at straws. I am actually flying home to WI next week to see my alternative medicine dr who is amazing. Chiro, Acu, Cranial, Herbs...all sorts of good stuff. (If anyone in southeastern WI needs a dr...I wish I still lived there in light of the whole gluten-free thing).

I deal with the same things - and I'm newly-diagnosed also (gluten-free for about 1.5 months now)

I get way upset around the same time as my period - I've been wondering the same things. For me - I seem to get worse AFTER my period, but I've only had a sample size of like 2 to draw from here... I may have glutened myself too...

I'll look forward to hearing what other people write on this topic.

Well... I don't know how much help I can be, because I'm only gluten-free 2 months & being relatively aged (50) still suffering some symptoms, which I'm told is normal when diagnosed this late in life... what with long-term deficiencies to deal with, &c.

But ANYWAY, I still do have mood & discomfort issues around my period. And I also get the food craving thing. But I'm noticing many changes from the gluten-free diet which I hope bode well for the future, & I think we just have to be patient. And be ever-vigilant about the gluten of course. I'm assuming you've addressed the whole cosmetics, meds, cross-contamination issue as well as the obvious stuff?

had to post as i feel like crap  went to gym last night and had to quit as i was gonna throw, my head hurts and has been like that for days and ive been really emotional, ive put it down to being glutenend as ive just come off the gluten challenge, however started to feel better untill lastnight, had celiac fish and chips yesterday and ive been fine up to now but think it was a major CC issue as i didnt whatch them like a hawk when they prepared my meal. anyway when i gt glutend i get major emotional lapses ( crying and rage) im told its completly normal for this to happen. it is confuseing cos the headache thing i keep thinking that im dehydrated  anyway stay with it and be well. hopefully things will get better for you soon. lol taz ;)

Welcome to the forum, @linnylou73! Are you claiming this based on a reaction or based upon actual testing?

This varies a lot from person to person. I include foods that are not certified gluten-free but are labelled "gluten-free", while super sensitive people only use certified gluten-free. Both types of products have been found to contain gluten, so there are no guarantees either way: It you are in the super sensitive group, eating a whole foods based diet where you prepare everything is the safest bet, but it's also difficult. Eating out is the the most risky, even if a restaurant has a gluten-free menu. I also include items that are naturally gluten-free, for example refried beans, tuna, pasta sauces, salsas, etc., which have a low overall risk of contamination.

I avoid turmeric now because I'm on low dose aspirin, but used to use this one: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08HYBN4DJ My recipes always vary according to what I have on hand, but my base is a frozen berry mix from Trader Joe's: https://www.traderjoes.com/home/products/pdp/fruits-greens-smoothie-blend-075603 In the warmer months I include herbs from my garden like Italian parsley and basil. I add almond milk as well.
