My EGD was yesterday at 1 PM. I actually was wheeled into the room at 2:00.

It's 5:00 the day after, and I'm still SOOOOOO gosh darn tired!! Is this normal??

I slept all afternoon yesterday. I took a 3 hour nap earlier this afternoon, and I'm ready for bed.

Is there anything I can do to get rid of this exhaustion and sleepiness?? Is it the versed? The demerol? Both?

I'm tired of being a non-functioning member of my home.

Both of those will make you tired, especially the demerol though. How long are you on them? You should be "back to normal" within 12 hours of stopping the meds, but I am not sure if you are taking them for a long period of time.....

I actually only had the one dose. That's why I'm so confused. I got both through an IV. Once I left the hospital, that was it.

My husband keeps saying, "It's the gluten... it's the gluten."

I think it's the gluten/caffeine with drawl. (is that possible??)

In all honesty, I'm usually a 2-3 diet cokes a day kind of person. (usually 22 oz size) I figured I can't cut caffeine cold turkey, so I had ONE 22 oz this afternoon.

I feel like poopookaakaa!! :blink:

Can't you just have a diet coke? I can't imagine my world without a diet pepsi, or rather those around me would not be having a very good time! :blink::blink::blink:

OOOOHHHHHH, well, then it is probably the lack of caffine (and the fact that the procedure alone is tireing! Not that I know from personal experience, but that any procedure puts your body through the ringers. It takes a couple of days for things to level out).

If it is caffine that you want, and can't have diet coke, what about tea?

Why does he want you off of carbonated beverages? I couldn't survive as a celiac without coke - a meal in itself - at least it works out that way sometimes. I went back to the non-diet ones, I know it is full of sugar, but at least it gives me some extra energy.

I have had 3 EGDs, and didn't have after-effects lasting longer than 6 hours or so with any of them. The half-life of versed is pretty short.

Another way to get caffeine - eat chocolate. I know I am showing all of my bad health habits here.

I assume you went to KU?

When you think about it, caffeine is an addictive drug, and if it's caffeinated diet soda you're drinking, you're opening yourself up to all kinds of health complications (all those horrible chemicals!)--just like eating gluten! If you have a chance to get off caffeine, you will ultimately be doing your health a huge favor (not to mention your wallet!).

I don't mean to sound holier-than-thou here--I'm totally addicted to chocolate--which definitely has caffeine! :(

Due to the extent of my GERD issues (scaring in my esophagus) - he doesn't want me to have carbonation or caffeine. And, the paper I got says chocolate is an irritant too.

Seriously.... you should see all the stuff I was told I *can not* have due to the GERD issues alone.

I had read about how much improved (and much safer) the whole endoscopy procedure is now and how easy it is compared to in the bad old days. So it wasn't until I was hooked up to all the monitors a few weeks ago that I began to think maybe there was more to the procedure than I had planned...

Took a good couple of days to recover from the meds (and I had to teach 9 a.m. the next morning! Was so out of it I ended up 'fessing to my students that I'd had a "day procedure" the day before and was still recovering.)

Stay away from all the hard-to-digest foods (this includes pop!) for a couple of days too--you've just had several chunks of your intestine scooped away. I was amazed at just how sore I felt for a few days afterwards. Go easy on your guts.

The meds are just to make it easier for the doctor. They don't do a thing for the patient. It's kind of like the old days when a mom giving birth was knocked out. It's the same thing with dentistry--people get knocked out all the time to have their wisdom teeth taken out, which, if the dentist knows what he or she is doing with Novacaine, IS NOT PAINFUL, even if your wisdom teeth are impacted. I used to think getting knocked out for all these things was necessary--until a friend of mine who is an anasthesiologist set me straight. Getting knocked out is just to make it more convenient for the doctor, who has no lasting after-effects from the meds!

I've had 2 endoscopies with only a local spray anesthetic, partly because I am always nervous about how I over-react to meds that don't seem to floor others (and I'm starting to suspect that that is somehow related to the gluten thing), and partly because I wanted to watch what was going on.

While it was certainly unpleasant (I have the world's worst gag reflex), the whole thing was only about 5 minutes, it was not the least bit painful, and when the doctor was done, I was able to get up and go home--NO after-effects whatsoever.

I also have a very patient doctor who was willing to let me try it without the "twilight" anesthesia--we know what most doctors are like....

      @Jane02, I hear you about the kale and collard greens.  I don't do dairy and must eat green leafies, too, to get sufficient calcium.  I must be very careful because some calcium supplements are made from ground up crustacean shells.  When I was deficient in Vitamin D, I took high doses of Vitamin D to correct the deficiency quickly.  This is safe and nontoxic.  Vitamin D level should be above 70 nmol/L.  Lifeguards and indigenous Pacific Islanders typically have levels between 80-100 nmol/L.   Levels lower than this are based on amount needed to prevent disease like rickets and osteomalacia. We need more thiamine when we're physically ill, emotionally and mentally stressed, and if we exercise like an athlete or laborer.  We need more thiamine if we eat a diet high in simple carbohydrates.  For every 500 kcal of carbohydrates, we need 500-1000 mg more of thiamine to process the carbs into energy.  If there's insufficient thiamine the carbs get stored as fat.  Again, recommended levels set for thiamine are based on minimum amounts needed to prevent disease.  This is often not adequate for optimum health, nor sufficient for people with absorption problems such as Celiac disease.  Gluten free processed foods are not enriched with vitamins like their gluten containing counterparts.  Adding a B Complex and additional thiamine improves health for Celiacs.  Thiamine is safe and nontoxic even in high doses.  Thiamine helps the mitochondria in cells to function.  Thiamine interacts with each of the other B vitamins.  They are all water soluble and easily excreted if not needed.       Thank you so much @knitty kitty for this insightful information! I would have never considered fractionated coconut oil to be a potential source of GI upset. I will consider all the info you shared. Very interesting about the Thiamine deficiency.  I've tracked daily averages of my intake in a nutrition software. The only nutrient I can't consistently meet from my diet is vitamin D. Calcium is a hit and miss as I rely on vegetables, dark leafy greens as a major source, for my calcium intake. I'm able to meet it when I either eat or juice a bundle of kale or collard greens daily haha. My thiamine intake is roughly 120% of my needs, although I do recognize that I may not be absorbing all of these nutrients consistently with intermittent unintentional exposures to gluten.  My vitamin A intake is roughly 900% (~6400 mcg/d) of my needs as I eat a lot of sweet potato, although since it's plant-derived vitamin A (beta-carotene) apparently it's not likely to cause toxicity.  Thanks again!

      Hello, @Jane02,  I take Naturewise D 3.  It contains olive oil.   Some Vitamin D supplements, like D Drops, are made with fractionated coconut oil which can cause digestive upsets.  Fractionated coconut oil is not the same as coconut oil used for cooking.  Fractionated coconut oil has been treated for longer shelf life, so it won't go bad in the jar, and thus may be irritating to the digestive system. I avoid supplements made with soy because many people with Celiac Disease also react to soy.  Mixed tocopherols, an ingredient in Thornes Vitamin D, may be sourced from soy oil.  Kirkland's has soy on its ingredient list. I avoid things that might contain or be exposed to crustaceans, like Metagenics says on its label.  I have a crustacean/shellfish/fish allergy.  I like Life Extension Bioactive Complete B Complex.  I take additional Thiamine B 1 in the form Benfotiamine which helps the intestines heal, Life Extension MegaBenfotiamine. Thiamine is needed to activate Vitamin D.   Low thiamine can make one feel like they are getting glutened after a meal containing lots of simple carbohydrates like white rice, or processed gluten free foods like cookies and pasta.   It's rare to have a single vitamin deficiency.  The water soluble B Complex vitamins should be supplemented together with additional Thiamine in the form Benfotiamine and Thiamine TTFD (tetrahydrofurfuryl disulfide) to correct subclinical deficiencies that don't show up on blood tests.  These are subclinical deficiencies within organs and tissues.  Blood is a transportation system.  The body will deplete tissues and organs in order to keep a supply of thiamine in the bloodstream going to the brain and heart.   If you're low in Vitamin D, you may well be low in other fat soluble vitamins like Vitamin A and Vitamin K. Have you seen a dietician?

      I do not know this, but since they are labelled gluten-free, and are not really a product that could easily be contaminated when making them (there would be not flour in the air of such a facility, for example), I don't really see contamination as something to be concerned about for this type of product.
