I Have Celiacs

I have a history of other issues....audiopathic autoimmune chronic hepatitus, ulceritive colitus, and now Celiacs. My longtime dr at children's hosptial said these three things commonly come together as a group eventually. My hepatitus is in remission, my colitus is under control, and now i'm gluten-free.

When my family and i had a consultation with my Dr we didn't ask if the family (both immediate and extended) should get tested. So even though I have other issues that normally come along with Celiacs, and no one else in my family really has any type of issues...should my family be tested for Celiacs? Could this still be genetically related?

Britni, since celiac disease is genetic (no doubt about that), chances are that others in your family have it, too. In fact, at least one of your parents at least has the gene, because you got it from somewhere.

All first and second degree relatives of celiacs are usually advised to get tested, even if they don't have obvious symptoms.

Welcome to the Board and, yes, it is genetic, and, yes, it's a good idea for family members to be tested. Keep reading here. There's lots of good info and help from many different people. We are all trying to cope with either celiac or gluten-intolerance. Good luck to you and get well!

      @Rebeccaj,  When you smell toast or pasta cooking, that means that particles of that food are floating around in the air.  Airborne gluten can then be inhaled and swallowed, meaning the food particles get into your digestive tract.   If you're careful to avoid gluten and are still having symptoms, those symptoms could be caused by vitamin deficiencies.

      Do discuss this recent article with your doctors.  Thiamine Vitamin B 1 is important to intestinal health.  Thiamine deficiency can occur in Celiac Disease due to malabsorption.  Supplementing with a B Complex, Benfotiamine, and Vitamin D can help symptoms.   Thiamine deficiency aggravates experimental colitis in mice by promoting glycolytic reprogramming in macrophages https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/39890689/#:~:text=Our mechanistic study revealed that,necessary to protect against colitis. "Conclusion and implications: Our study provides evidence linking thiamine deficiency with proinflammatory macrophage activation and colitis aggravation, suggesting that monitoring thiamine status and adjusting thiamine intake is necessary to protect against colitis."

      Do keep in mind that most gluten free flours are not enriched nor fortified with vitamins and minerals like gluten containing flours are required to do.   Consuming a diet high in carbohydrates without sufficient B vitamins to digest and process them into energy can lead to High Calorie Malnutrition and weight gain. Deficiency symptoms of B vitamins resemble gastrointestinal symptoms when after eating gluten.  Gastrointestinal Beriberi is a form of Thiamine deficiency.   Do talk to your doctors about supplementing with essential nutrients while on the gluten free diet, especially if you're consuming processed foods.

      Do be sure to talk to your doctors and dieticians about supplementing with a B Complex and extra Thiamine (Benfotiamine, TTFD, thiamine hydrochloride) and other nutrients one might be low in due to malabsorption of nutrients in Celiac Disease. This study shows that Thiamine deficiency and Vitamin C deficiency is frequently found in Hashimoto's.  From personal experience, Thiamine and Vitamin C has helped my Hashimoto's.
