Corned Beef And Cabbage

Does anyone know if corned beef and cabbage is gluten free? My favorite family restaurant serves it every Wednesday and I sure would love to order some. Problem is, I don't know what is in the brine that corned beef is made with.

you should ask the chef.

oh man that brings back memories, my dad used to make that a lot when I was growing up... I'm going to have to get the recipe from him!

The corned beef I buy is corn/gluten/soy/etc. free and I just pick it up at my local grocery store. I throw it into the crock pot with cabbage and potatoes - boy, my one son doesn't like meat too much but when we have this, he can't get enough.

Yes, I will be asking the chef/owner of the restaurant. However, I don't always trust that they really know for sure. I think I will go to the market and read the label on the corned beef.

All the corned beef I've ever checked out at the market has been gluten-free, even the spice packet. But absolutely do talk to folks at the restaurant.

Sounds like I will be able to enjoy corned beef and cabbage! Thanks to all of you for your input.

I eat corned beef and cabbage from the regular ol supermarket. The spices have always been fine for me too. I would ask the chef anyway.. just to be doubly sure. I make this awesome sweet/tangy mustard sauce to go with it... put it on the beef and cabbage and heck the boiled potatoes too!

They may want to also eliminate other possible causes for your symptoms/issues and are doing additional tests.  Here is info about blood tests for celiac disease--if positive an endoscopy where biopsies of your intestinal villi are taken to confirm is the typical follow up.

In the Europe the new protocol for making a celiac disease diagnosis in children is if their tTg-IgA (tissue transglutaminase IgA) levels are 10 times or above the positive level for celiac disease--and you are above that level. According to the latest research, if the blood test results are at certain high levels that range between 5-10 times the reference range for a positive celiac disease diagnosis, it may not be necessary to confirm the results using an endoscopy/biopsy: Blood Test Alone Can Diagnose Celiac Disease in Most Children and Adults TGA-IgA at or Above Five Times Normal Limit in Kids Indicates Celiac Disease in Nearly All Cases No More Biopsies to Diagnose Celiac Disease in Children! May I ask why you've had so many past tTg-IgA tests done, and many of them seem to have been done 3 times during short time intervals?

@JettaGirl, "Coeliac" is the British spelling of "celiac". Same disease.

This may sound ridiculous but is this supposed to say Celiacs? I looked up Coeliacs because you never know, there’s a lot of diseases related to a disease that they come up with similar names for. It’s probably meant to say Celiacs but I just wanted to confirm.

I was told it was to see how much damage has been caused. But just told CT with contrast not any other name for it.
