Help .. I need an opinion.. what is better .. Or who should I get to treat my 1 year old... a peditrician who specializes in Celiac . ( this is what I have now... a gastro intestinal ( all childrens hospital doctor ... and a regular peditrician . Is there such a thing as a celiac doctor in Sarasota area.

I am at a loss . I was told by the gastro yesterday .. Just do not feed the baby wheat products.... I realize I am 1/2 of one question 1/2 of another .sorry,,, Thank god I have a food chemist as a sister... But what the heck. I asked the gastro doctor about the tests and levels.... ( I have seen everyones bio and this got me thinking.. ) he doesnt have enough levels to show. where do I go ... from here. dont feed him gluten .. seems pretty wide open. I dont have a bigger picture than gloom and doom ... I am scared I dont want to make him sick on accident. I feel like I have been really let down by this doctor. I amnot sure what this is .. and what he is exactly allergic to. wheat.. or what? Help .

I don't know any current good Dr's in that area, but I'm originally from Sarasota and wanted to say HI! My dad and my husbands mom still live there and we still make it down every once in a while...

currently my daughter only see's a regular pediatrician for monitoring... she is absolutely thriving on the gluten-free diet so there is no need to follow up with a gi doc.

I have a good doctor in Tampa who really helped me figure everything out. I don't know if she sees kids but you could call and maybe she would have someone good to recommend in Sarasota. If not, Tampa is not that far. I highly recommend her and she never made me feel like I was crazy - as many other doctors did.

Oats naturally contain a protein called avenin, which is similar to the gluten proteins found in wheat, barley, and rye. While avenin is generally considered safe for most people with celiac disease, some individuals, around 5-10% of celiacs, may also have sensitivity to avenin, leading to symptoms similar to gluten exposure. You may fall into this category, and eliminating them is the best way to figure this out. Some people substitute gluten-free quinoa flakes for oats if they want a hot cereal substitute. If you are interested in summaries of scientific publications on the topic of oats and celiac disease, we have an entire category dedicated to it which is here: https://www.celiac.com/celiac-disease/oats-and-celiac-disease-are-they-gluten-free/
