Ds And Bowel Issues?

So, my oldest(not little Lanigan this time) is having an issue. He tries to poop so hard he almost makes himself throw up. Although, he acts like he has no control over his pushing. Nothing happens. No poop. Then about 1-3 hours later, he will have HORRIBLE runny stools. Like water. And his belly hurts. He is also peeing all the time. Every 30 minutes to an hour. And not just a little bit, a LOT. His fabulous(that was said with much sarcasm) here said he is peeing to much because he is constipated and not emptying his bladder all the way. Well, he has to be emptying it completely. I stand there with him. He pees FOREVER. I have even measured his pee in a hat. He is peeing more than 200cc's each time. And he might be constipated, but then he has the horrible diareah. All in the same stinking day. She wants me to put him on Miralax, but after researching this, I feel very uncomfortable doing so. She told me to keep him on it for 6 months. It is recommended that it is used for no longer than 2 weeks to avoid dependency. I am just frustrated.

I can't remember, is Langdon gluten-free? Is anyone else in your family Celiac? Have you tried the gluten-free diet with your oldest?

My personal opinion would be to try the diet before any drugs... and if these problems go away then you have your answer... but that's just me.

If he is having runny stools, then is it actually constipation? Is he feeling the sudden need to have a bowel movement, but nothing happens? Is he having stomach cramping before the need to have a movement? Is it possible this is not constipation, but an intolerance reaction (lactose intolerance for example)? I know from my own intolerance reactions, that I have cramping and a sudden need to go, but then nothing happens...this pattern repeats itself until I finally am able to have a bowel movement...sometimes hours later.

If it truly is constipation, then it can have an effect on the bladder as well, but it sounds like, in your son's case, something else is likely going on. In terms of Miralax, it is a better choice of laxative than others out there, and can be used as recommended by your doctor. My son is on Miralax, because of chronic constipation that resulted in a distended bowel and lack of control over bladder and bowel movements. He will be on Miralax for a loooong time...apparently it takes a couple of years for a distended bowel to return to normal. I suspect there is a dietary issue at play, but we haven't figured it out yet, and the doctor is positive it's simply a slow metabolism. <_<

From all the research I have done on Miralax, and from my younger sons GI doc's recommendation, I just do not feel comfortable with Miralax. "I" don't think he is constipated at all. I think his guts are contracting, trying to poop, but there is nothing there to poop. Eventually he will go, but his tummy hurts til he does.

It's important that you are comfortable with the method of treatment. :) Have you tested your son for allergies or intolerances?

We're still trying to figure out my son's intolerances, and will push for complete allergy testing (he's only been tested and confirmed for severe penicillin allergy). We tried going dairy free with some success (my son seemed to have more energy and fewer tummy upsets without dairy in his diet.) At this point we've significantly reduced his dairy consumption.

Avery has had no allergy testing as of yet. We finally got a referral to my younger son's GI doc this morning. Hopefully he will know something that helps.

Your situation sounds familiar to ours. Our son was originally dx'ed(by a GI) with chronic d, then by an ER doc with chronic C..(very long story) when we finally got to our "on the ball" GI, we asked about the conflicting dx's. She said that he actually was both. Because the Celiac was causing him to not completely empty his bowels when he would go...then he would just "leak" around the mass that was in his bowels.(sorry that is kind of graphic). We had him on Miralax for 4 days before his scoping and she said he was still very full at the thime of the procedure.

Take that info for what you think it is worth. When we went gluten-free, we have had no need for the Miralax again.

Our oldest also had wierd bowel issues...he would get so constipated that he WOULD throw up when he was finally able to move his bowels...haven't had him tested though.

Good luck,

Dallas

Hi all,  Looking for some advice. I started having some symptoms this past summer like night sweats and waking at 4 am and felt quite achy in my joints. I was training heavily for cycling for a few weeks prior to the onset of these symptoms starting. I have had low Ferratin for about 4 years (started at 6) and usually sits around 24 give or take. I was doing some research and questioned either or not I might have celiac disease (since I didn’t have any gastric symptoms really). My family doctor ran blood screening for celiac. And my results came back: Tissue Transglutaminase Ab IgA HI 66.6 U/mL Immunoglobulin IgA 1.73 g/ My doctor then diagnosed me with celiac and I have now been gluten free for 3 months. In this time I no longer get night sweats my joint pain is gone and I’m still having trouble sleeping but could very much be from anxiety. I was since referred to an endoscopy clinic to get a colonoscopy and they said I should be getting a biopsy done to confirm celiac. In this case I have to return to eating gluten for 4-6 weeks before the procedure. Just wanted some advice on this. I seem to be getting different answers from my family physician and from the GI doctor for a diagnosis.    Thanks,

Cold/flu or gluten poisoning? Hello. I've had another similar episode. I find it very difficult to differentiate between the symptoms of a cold or flu and those caused by gluten poisoning. In fact, I don't know if my current worsening is due to having eaten something that disagreed with me or if the cold I have has caused my body, which is hypersensitive, to produce symptoms similar to those of gluten poisoning.

I'm no longer dealing with constipation. I got my liver test last month and it was in normal range. Two years ago I did have a vitamin D deficiency but I'm know taking vitamin D3 pills. Last month I got my vitamin D checked and it was in normal range. I don't believe I've had my choline checked. However, I do drink almond milk eat Greek yogurt on a daily basis.

Non-Celiac Gluten Sensitivity (NCGS) can be associated with low ferritin and iron deficiency. Once Celiac Disease (1% of the population affected) has been ruled out by tests the next step is to check for Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity (10% of the population affected) by eliminating gluten for a trial period, then re-introduce Gluten Challange. Have you been supplementing Iron? How are your liver enzymes? Low levels of ferritin indicate iron deficiency, while  59% transferrin saturation indicates high iron levels.  Possibly indicating Fatty Liver Disease.  Choline is crucial for liver health, and deficiency is a known trigger for Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver.  Some experts say that less than 10% eat the the Food and Nutrition Board established Adequate Intake that are based on the prevention of liver damage. Severe constipation and hemorrhoids may be linked to a bile or choline deficiency.  "Ninety-five percent of phospholipids (PLs) in bile is secreted as phosphatidylcholine or lecithin."  Fatty acid composition of phospholipids in bile in man   Deficiency of these bile salts causes the bile to get thick. Some people with Celiac Disease are misdiagnosed with Gall Bladder bile issues.  Removal of the gallbladder provides only temporary relief. Whether or not celiac disease or NCGS are your issues you need to look at your vitamin D blood level.
