Coughing When Eating...

Hi,

Hope all are well.

I have a chronic cough... I think it happens in particular when I eat... does anyone have this.. But some days it is all day.. My training buddy/coach blew up at me the other day about my coughing all the time and not finding out what is causing it (I had kind of got so used to it that I don't notice it any more)....

Had actually mentioned it to my dr before and they did chest x-ray and all was clear.

Talked to my endocrinologist today. He agreed we should find out what the cought is. He acknowledged knowing nothing about celiac (he said asians don't get it. I explained to him that they do and he was interested and said he will do some more research - especially when I said it is often associated with other autoimmune problems like thyroid and diabetes). Told him my experience with the gastro dr and how I would like to actually try to get a diagnosis (I think it will help me stick to this diet). He is finding out if we can send tests overseas (like to Singapore) to clarify.

He also agreed to refer me to an allergologist to see if they can see if there is anything else going on. At least this guy is working with me.

He is concerned that maybe the allergy symptoms are caused as a reaction to the dessicated thyroid that I now take...

Also finally got enterolab test kit (cute poop kit!) - which took 6 weeks to reach me here in Philippines. Now just got to check out how to send it back (not poop then hope :) ) before I do the deed....

I just found out that a chronic bronchial cough is one of the symptoms of an autoimmune disease I have and wonder if that is what afflicted my Mom for so many years. Oh well, hard to say.

But there is a link between celiac and pulmonary issues, someone just posted a list on another message forum. Open Original Shared Link

Another thing to think of is your pillow. I recently learned a really bad sort of mold can grow in your pillow called aspergillus. When I heard that I threw out my pillows and replaced them and put a allergy barrier cover on it. But probably allergies of any kind could cause a chronic cough.

Hi Sally;

A cronic cough and scratchy throat can also be caused by acid reflux, or GERD

Ursa Major Collaborator

Even though what causes my cough is a little more unusual, I want to throw it out anyway. My cough is a tic!

My cough was due to cough variant asthma, which was surprisingly difficult to diagnose. As it is a form of reactive airway disease, the food could aggrivate it, but I'd be more inclined to think GERD or refllux as well.

Oh, there's an allergic condition called Eosinophilic esophagitis. Here's an article about that, maybe you've got a weird presentation: Open Original Shared Link

I used to cough a lot until well into my second year gluten free. In my case it was acid reflux, which apparently was caused by the gluten because now it's completely gone, and so is the cough.

Good luck, the doc sounds nice in any case!

Hi Nancy,

Thanks for your article. It does ring a few bells. Like the reflux not responding well to medication, difficulty swallowing from time to time / feeling food gets stuck.. particularly things like bread, rice, potato (sometimes, not always). Feeling like I have a rock in my chest (often). The gastro dr. said inflammation was visible during the endoscopy - but he didn't do any biopsy, other than to check for h.pyelori...

My friends think I have an eating disorder. I don't! It's just that eating is not a comfortable activity and therefore of course it becomes an issue, its either all or nothing - and it's usually worse by evening, which is when they usually see me...

I will have to do some more research... I don't want to just go running to dr. sprouting new things to test for, he will think I am a hypochondriac (more than I already personally think I am :)).

My feeling is that food problems / intolerance are issues... will see if I can work with the allergologist my endo referred me to (will make an appointment today).

Thanks Nancy and Everyone - this site and everyone's response is great!

Nancy, I forwarded your link to my endo - it is very interesting. Great that the links are all official medical references so probably he will be interested.

I somehow feel that everything is linked - and definitely there is autoimmune stuff going on.

Hello, I was very stick,  with flu like symptoms, but my virus panel came back negative and we couldn’t figure out what’s going on. The doctor then added a celiac panel.  Has anyone ever had such a dramatic change?  What are the odds this is true celiac I am going to have an endoscopy, but it’s expensive and I just feel like why can’t the labs be enough?

Eating out in general is full of risks, but this article may help:

This kind of question is always difficult to give a definitive answer to because of so many variables. One such variable is the sensitivity of the individual celiac to small amounts of gluten cross contamination. An amount that causes a reaction in one celiac many not in another, or at least not be discernable which, of course, does not exactly equate to being "safe".

I don't live in the US, but based on this thread, I wouldn't risk it:   https://www.reddit.com/r/glutenfree/comments/1n2ehw8/cracker_barrel/   This app is helpful: https://www.findmeglutenfree.com/

I see that Cracker Barrel restaurants have a gluten free menu (not all locations, but one confirmed that they do). I was wondering if it is safe for my 5 year old son with celiac disease?
