Off To Do My First Ironman Race

Hi,

I am going to Malaysia on Monday. Will be there to do my first IronMan triathlon which will be held in Langkawi on 24th Feb. This is going to be hard and a huge challenge. I have been training for more than 6 months (doing triathlon since mid 2004). I will be doing my best to finish in the 17 hour cutoff.

Maybe not such a huge thing - but 7 years ago I weighed 210+ lbs and couldn't even run for 1 minute. Now I weigh just under 150lbs and am doing this - despite everything. I have thyroid failure and PCOS. It seems I have celiac, and probably some other food allergies (my new dr. will start testing / elimination diet after the event).

Preparing for this has been such a learning experience - including having to deal with some health problems that I had been ignoring (like chronic C-D - which I was previously told was IBS, but which has much improved since cutting out gluten, and chronic coughing - which was just officially diagnosed as asthma after testing and is being treated with inhaled steroids (I never realised I was having breathing problems.. ).

Joining this event is a milestone for me on how far I have come - regardless of how I do on the day. Another reason for doing this is in memory of my father who died of cancer last year and also as an example to my totally unathletic family; I want to show my nieces and nephews (all 13 of them) that adults can be active and do this sort of thing.

Please spare a thought and a prayer for all of us who will be racing on that day. There will be about 700 participants. 17 people are joining from Philippines - all of whom I know.

Take Care

Sally

I have a wonderful friend named Tim, who is a member of this forum too, but has not posted for a few years--he ran in this triathlons before going gluten-free. He used to tell me of the dedication it takes to be an ironman runner and I am proud of you. You have come a long way to get where you are and I think it's wonderful that you are doing this.

Angels will be watching over you--best of luck to you.

Wow, what a journey you have been through. Even if you don't make the 17 hours, you'll still have accomplished so much. I believe that you will finish in time. You have come so far. Best of luck and have fun.

Way to go Sally! You've won already, even before the race starts. I do small (sprint) triathlons and I KNOW how much you must have been training. Congratulations on overcoming all you've been through and being ready for this challenge! Best of luck to you and I hope you have a great experience!

Impressive. Best of luck!

Please do let us know how it goes.

I did a 1/2 ironman a few years ago, and it kicked my ass! I certainly would not have wanted to turn around and do it again!

Have fun and good luck!

Geoff

Way to go!!! It IS a huge thing to go from not being able to run to being prepared for an ironman. Good luck with the race and may your preparation kick in and get you in under the cut-off.

So how exactly does it work to do an Ironman with Celiac? I am preparing for my first in 2012 (been doing triathlons for 7 years now), and as I'm starting the more intense research and preparation, I'm realizing that other than water and uncut fruit, the aid stations offer NOTHING that is gluten free. 140.7 is a long way to go, and while I can bring all my own nutrition, how do I *get* to it without having to cart it all with me or violating outside help rules?

I've emailed Ironman directly, and I'm waiting to hear from them, but would greatly appreciate info from anyone who has been there!!!

Thanks!

~Karen

I do believe that people are under so much pressure up have a sleeping  pattern ,  with working and how households work these days , but in reality there is no wrong or right at to sleep , I believe your neighbour showed this with such a long life , I do exactly the same  at night many times so I hope I live into my nineties also , I have found one thing in life your body knows what's best so good to listen to wat it needs however unconventional that maybe 🤗

Try adding some Thiamine Hydrochloride (thiamine HCl) and see if there's any difference.  Thiamine HCl uses special thiamine transporters to get inside cells.  I take it myself.   Tryptophan will help heal the intestines.  Tryptophan is that amino acid in turkey that makes you sleepy after Thanksgiving dinner.  I take mine with magnesium before bedtime.

I live in the upper mid-west and was just diagnosed with marsh 3c celiac less than a month ago.  As a 51 year old male, I now take a couple of different gluten free vitamins.  I have not noticed any reaction to either of these items.  Both were purchased from Amazon. 1.  Nature Made Multivitamin For Him with No Iron 2.  Gade Nutrition Organic Quercetin with Bromelain Vitamin C and Zinc Between those two, I am ingesting 2000 IU of vitamin D per day. Best of luck, Known1

I am doing a gluten challenge right now and I bought vital wheat gluten so I can know exactly how much gluten I am getting. One tablespoon is 7g so 1½ tablespoons of Vital Wheat Gluten per day will get you to 10g You could add it to bean burgers as a binder or add to hot chocolate or apple sauce and stir.

Raising you vitamin D will increase absorption of calcium automatically without supplementation of calcium.  A high PTH can be caused by low D causing poor calcium absorption; not insuffient calcium intake.  With low D your body is not absorbing calcium from your food so it steals it from your bones.  Heart has priority over bone. I've been taking 10,000 IU D3 a day since 2015.  My doctor says to continue. To fix my lactose intolerance, lots of lactobacillus from yogurts, and brine fermented pickles and saurkraut and olives.  We lose much of our ability to make lactase endogenosly with maturity but a healthy colony of lactobacillus in our gut excretes lactase in exchange for room and board. The milk protein in grass fed milk does not bother me. It tastes like the milk I grew up on.  If I drink commercial milk I get heartburn at night. Some experts estimate that 90% of us do not eat Adequite Intake of choline.  Beef and eggs are the principle source. Iodine deficiency is a growing concern.  I take 600 mcg a day of Liquid Iodine.  It and NAC have accelerated my healing all over.  Virtually blind in my right eye after starting antihypertensive medication and vision is slowly coming back.  I had to cut out starches because they drove my glucose up into the 200+ range.  I replaced them with Red Bull for the glucose intake with the vitamins, minerals and Taurine needed to process through the mitochodria Krebs Cycle to create ATP.  Went from A1c 13 down to 7.9.  Work in progress. Also take B1,B2,B3,B5,B6. Liquid Iodine, Phosphatidyl Choline, Q10, Selenium, D and DHEA.     Choline supplemented as phosphatidylcholine decreases fasting and postmethionine-loading plasma homocysteine concentrations in healthy men +
