Doctor Advice For Columbus, Ohio

I am looking for a new family doctor in Columbus, Ohio that is aware of Celiac, related issues, and/or maintenance types of tests that should be done after diagnosis. I am also wondering if I should be seeing a GI or nutritionist, or if a good family doctor should be able to answer my questions (being a newly diagnosed Celiac). Any thoughts or good doctors in Columbus would be appreciated!

I am in the same boat but cannot find even a GI to figure out what's wrong with me.

I have all of the classic symptoms. Neg bloodwork, neg endo, colonscopy two years ago showed lyphocytic colitis (some believe is an autoimmune disorder), and just today I was diagonsied with Hashimoto's Disease.

I feel better when I elimated wheat from my diet but I am the kind of person that has to have a firm diagonsis to stick with something.

What GI are you seeing in Columbus?

Kara

I'm so sorry to hear that you haven't been able to get a resolution with your diagnosis. I'm sure that being treated for Hashimoto's will turn your situation around quickly, though, and may clear the air to help diagnose anything else that may be complicating things for you.

I am actually not seeing a GI right now at all - I was diagnosed by my family doctor. My main concern is in my post diagnosis treatment, which so far has been nothing (pretty disappointed in my doctor's reponse). I was given two sheets of paper describing my new "diet" and a list of like 20 foods not to eat. After the research that I've done on my own (and with the help of reading this forum!), I'm realizing that this is a much bigger endeavor, and I'm concerned that I may not be doing the right things for my future health. I think I need some type of professional advice and help, but I'm just not sure what I should expect from a family doctor vs. a GI vs. a nutritionist.

Good luck to you Kara - I hope you find some relief soon!

I don't really know of any fantastic doctors or gi doctors, but the dietician that my son saw was fantastic. Her name is Mary Kay Sharatt (sp) and she works out of Children's Hospital. I am pretty sure that she will see adults too, but I am not positive. I found out that I had Celiac b/c of the dietician that I was seeing at the time, but she didn't have nearly the information that Mary Kay does. I don't have a phone number readily available, but I think I have her email if you want to PM me. She gave us so much info when my son was diagnosed last summer.

Body dysmorphia experience. When I was at the worst of my gluten problem I use to get chronic constipation; I would spend long time sitting on the toilet. One day as I was tired of sitting, I rested my head on my hands and my elbows on my knees, as soon as I felt the pressure of my elbows on my knees the perception of my body changed to that of a tarantula; I visualized and it felt real. The perception went away as soon as I removed the pressure on my knees, I deducted that the pressure of my elbows on the knees caused the sensation, so I repeated the position and the sensation of having the body of a tarantula happened each time. I have not had that experience since then because I started a gluten-free diet short after. I wonder if those people that look distorted to themselves in the mirror could have something similar but with the responsible sensory contacts located on their feet. I want to document this experience because it might help some research or others, it sounds crazy but I feel the right thing to do is to share it.

Get tested for vitamin deficiencies.  Though neuropathy can be a symptom of celiac, it can also be caused by deficiencies due to poor digestion caused by celiac and could be easier to treat.

Thank you so much for your response  Yes it seems as though things get very painful as time goes on.  I'm not eating gluten as far as I know.  However, I'm not sure of cross contamination.  My system seems to weaken to hidden spices and other possibilities. ???  if cross contamination is possible...I am in a super sensitive mode of celiac disease.. Neuropathy from head to toes
