Hi,

I was wondering if anyone out there was going to attending the conference at Stanford on Oct. 30. I'm going there by myself but would like to meet up with someone and do some site seeing. I have never been to the San Francisco area and would like to see the sites, but a little afraid of going by myself.

If anyone is going to be there and would like to meet up, please let me know.

Thanks a bunch!

We were going to go and take the whole family. I was surprised when my husband decided we would go, since he isn't fully on board with the whole gluten-free lifestyle. He was interested in learning more though. He freaked out a little about the price, but the deciding factor ended up being the children's program. He was absolutely against the kids (ages 5, 8, & 10) going off on a bus trip, swimming (with strangers) and that they wouldn't be in the same building with us the whole day. So now we aren't going. <_< Oh well. There is always a next time. I hope you guys enjoy yourselves. :D

God bless,

Mariann, I hope you and your husband reconsider attending the Conference on the 30th. The kids will love it. The afternoon swimming program is a highlight for the children whenever it's on the schedule. The bus, the Stanford Marguerite, is the shuttle bus that takes Stanford students around campus and ferries commuters to campus from the train station. The Palo Alto school district has been lobbying for years to have the Marguerite shuttle used as a school bus! We will have exclusive use of it for the afternoon. They will be accompanied by trained Stanford student counselors, and there will be PLENTY of lifeguards at the indoor swimming pool at C.A.R., a wonderful Palo Alto resource that fits right in with what we're doing to help celiac kids connect with each other and have a positive outlook on life. I pulled this from the web site www.c-a-r.org: The mission of the Community Association for Rehabilitation, Inc. (C

I would love to go, but my husband is very overprotective of the kids. It is totally unrelated to the fact that they are gluten intolerant, he is in law enforcement and was train to be suspicious of everyone! He was okay with them participating in the program at the conference, but the idea of them leaving with strangers and going swimming was out of the question. He doesn't even allow them to swim at our community pool (which is swarming with lifeguards!) unless I am with them. He doesn't like them going on their swim day field trips each June with their school either, but he can't stop them from going when I sign the permission slip. And I am not going to get into a big arguement with him over it either. ;) It just isn't worth it.

I wish their was an alternative for the kids who either can't or don't want to go swimming. What do you do with the kids that are non-swimmers or have medical reasons that make them not able to swim? Just curious.

I thought about going and just keeping the kids with me for the afternoon, but then that would limit what I am able to do...

Thanks for the encouragement though. The money part of it was workable, but hard for my husband to accept! He doesn't like to spend much money! At least he doesn't hassle me about how much I spend on gluten-free foods! I mean, we gotta eat right!

God bless,

Mariann

Mariann,

Thanks for explaining your husband's reluctance to have your children travel off-campus. I wish we could provide babysitting for the elementary kids in the afternoon, but that's just not part of the program. Why don't you come by yourself?

And cubbielove, if I weren't working on the conference the day before, I'd be happy to show you around Stanford. It's a beautiful campus: there's the Rodin Sculpture Garden and Cantor art museum (and cafe!) about five minutes' walk from the Alumni Center, where we'll have the conference on Saturday. If you're staying in Palo Alto, you should take the train to San Francisco (an hour or less, depending on the train) and spend the day there. If you have a car, you can also drive to the redwoods or the wine country north of San Francisco, or south, to Monterey and Carmel. I've found celiacs (and parents of celiacs!) to be the nicest people, so don't worry about going solo to the conference. You'll meet folks at your table during the lectures, as well as at lunch. Please look for Molly and me.

My husband and I are actually going. We have been wanting to go to San Francisco for a vacation and we had free tickets and hotel (he travels for work) so when I heard about the conference I was so excited and was shocked when he was into it! I am a little worried about eating out on vacation - we will be there for 4 days prior to the conference so there will be a lot of eating out! I am only 2 weeks into the diet so the resteruant thing is still a little intimidating for me!

To find out about the conferance go to the celiac association San Francisco chapter and there is a whole thing about it

I'm not sure what our plan is for the trip but if anyone want to meet up for a dinner or something we can arrange that!

Hi Stephanie,

If you would like to meet for dinner that would be great - I'm travelling by myself and don't know anybo there, so it would be nice to meet someone. I'll be coming in on the Thursday before, so Friday night might be good - let me know. I'm staying in Palo Alto, not too far from Stanford. If you do want to meet, I'll give you the name of the hotel, I'll be at.

Sharon, we are staying in San Francisco the first couple of nights but we are driving to Palo Alto on Friday, so that could work. Let me double check with my husband and see where we are staying (he made the arrangments) and we'll figure out if that would work. Hopefully we can meet, I'll find out the plan in the next couple of days...

Stephanie,

I'm going to be staying at Rickey's Hyatt in Palo Alto if you're still interested in meeting for dinner on Friday. Let me know because I've volunteered to set up for the conference on Friday night, so I would have to leave if you wanted to meet.

Thanks.

Sharon, we are staying in Palo Alto on Friday as well (not sure what hotel though) but earlier that day we are going to visit a winery in Sonoma. I am not sure how long that takes or how long of a drive to Palo Alto. We are going to work out the details of out trip tonight, I will look at a map and try to figure out if we would be there in time for dinner, I would love to meet you!

Stephanie

Hi Jmartes71 That is so much like my story! You probably know where Laytonville is and that's where I was living just before my 60th birthday when the new Dr. suggested I could have Celiacs. I didn't go on a gluten challange diet before having the Celiac panel blood test drawn. The results came back as equivical as one antibody level was very high but another, tissue transaminasewas normal. Itdid show I was  allergic to cows milk and I think hot peppers. I immediately went gluten free but did not go in for an endoscopy. I found an online lab online that would do the test to show if I had a main celiac gene (enterolab.com). The report came back that I had inherited a main celiac gene, DQ8, from one parent and a D!6 from the other parent. That combination is knows to sym[tons of celiac worse than just inheriting one main celiac gene. With my version of celiac disease I was mostly constipated but after going gluten-free I would have diarrhea the few times I was glutened either by cross contamination or eating some food containing gluten. I have stayed gluten-free for almost 20 years now and knew within a few days that it was right for me although my recovery has been slow.   When I go to see a  medical provide and tell them I have celiacs they don't believe me. The same when I tell them that I carry a main celiac gene, the DQ8. It is only when I tell them that I get diarrhea after eating gluten that they realize that I might have celiac disease. Then they will order th Vitamin B12 and D3 that I need to monitor as my B12 levels can go down very fast if I'm not taking enough of it. Medical providers haven't been much help in my recovery. They are not well trained in this problem. I really hope this helps ypu. Take care.

@DebJ14, You said "husband has low platelets, bruises easily and gets bloody noses just from Fish Oil  He suggested he take Black Cumin Seed Oil for inflammation.  He discovered that by taking the Black Seed oil, he can eat carbs and not go into A Fib, since it does such a good job of reducing inflammation."   I don't think black seed oil is lowering inflammation.  It's lowering blood glucose levels. Black cumin seed lowers blood glucose levels.  There's a connection between high blood glucose levels and Afib.    Has your husband been checked for diabetes?   Must Read: Associations of high-normal blood pressure and impaired fasting glucose with atrial fibrillation https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/36750354/

Healthy Omega Three fats.  Olive oil or flaxseed oil, oily fish, fatty cuts of meat.   Our bodies run much better on burning fats as fuel.  Diets based on carbohydrates require an increased amount of thiamine to process the carbs into fuel for the body.  Unfortunately, thiamine mononitrate is used to enrich rice.  Thiamine mononitrate is relatively unusable in the body.  So a high carb diet can further decrease thiamine stores in the body.  Insufficient thiamine in the body causes the body to burn body fat and muscle for fuel, so weight loss and muscle wasting occurs.  Those extra carbohydrates can lead to Candida (often confused with mold toxicity) and SIBO (Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth).   Losing weight quickly is a symptom of thiamine insufficiency.  Muscle wasting is a symptom of thiamine insufficiency.  I lost sixty pounds in a month.   Having difficulty putting weight on and keeping it on is a symptom of thiamine insufficiency.   The AIP diet works because it eliminates all grains and grasses, rice, quinoa, all the carbs.  Without the carbs, the Candida and SIBO get starved and die off.  Easy way to change your microbiome is to change what you feed it.  With the rowdy neighbors gone, the intestine can heal and absorb more nutrients.   Supplementing with essential vitamins and minerals is beneficial.  Talk to your doctor and nutritionist.  Benfotiamine is a form of thiamine that promotes intestinal healing.  The eight B vitamins are water soluble, so if you don't need them, they can be gotten rid of easily.   Night shades are excluded on the AIP diet.  Potatoes, tomatoes, peppers and eggplant are not allowed on the AIP diet.  They contain alkaloids that promote "a leaky gut".  Benfotiamine can help here. Sweet potatoes are avoided because they contain thiaminases, chemicals that break thiamine so that the body cannot use it.   The AIP diet has helped me.
