I don't know how many areas of teh US have Schwans but I'm from the midwest and we do! They have been teh only company that I've talked to that has not been that willing to help! every other company has provided me with a list of their gluten-free products and offers more assistance if needed.

Schwans pretty much said check the ingredients and that's about all we can do. When I asked about possible cross contamination they said " we package and process foods in alot of diffrent plants"....ok that really didn't help but thank you very much! Just needed to vent. I was a little frustrated. I used them alot in the past but now even their foods that don't have gluten in them I won't purchase due to possib;e cross contamination and their attitudes!

I know what you mean, i emailed them weeks ago and they told me that i could not get an list but i could call about all the items that i want to. I was not impressed at all. But i do like our schwans guy that comes to our house, He will bring me out the pacakges of the things that i want to check. I was upset tho, we bought the kids bomb pops, i was like they have to be safe. Well after we bought them on the back says they might contain milk protien, I was like for bomb pops.

I do like lots of their foods and the kids love their ice cream, so i will continue to buy from them but just nothing for me. Even tho i do like their tamales lol

I know!!! I really like my Schwans guy and was sad about telling him I was no longer going to buy schwans items!!! He understood though! I told him the truth....if I can get the same thing with two companies I'm going to buy from teh company that wants to help me and wants to keep me buying their products...schwans didn't! But it's nice to know I'm not alone in my frustrations!LOL

What gets me is they came out with new things that work with weight watchers and stuff to work if u have high blood sugar, but they wont help with us celiacs. I think they need to work with all of the different heath issues.

Yup! when I first asked my schwans guy that came to my door if tehy had any lists he got me the nutritional guide...which didn't help but he was trying to be helpful...he went further than their customer reps did! But like you said they have products for specially for other things...but Celiac is just not as well know. Hopefully things liek teh people mag article and other exposure will help!

I do think it funny when you say "really like our Schwans guy." Because as a kid, we had a cat that hated every single visitor to the house. Hated, meaning, he would attack themin a very mean manner.

But. the Schwan's guy, he loved. He would run down the stairs and totally butter the guy up, rubbing and purring. it was the strangest thing.

I assume that you already know that genetic testing for celiac disease cannot be used to confirm a celiac diagnosis. About 40% of the general population has the genetic potential to develop celiac disease but only about 1% actually develop celiac disease. It can be used to rule out celiac disease with a high degree of confidence, however, in the case where the genetic testing is negative for the genes. Until and unless you are actually diagnosed with celiac disease I would not raise this as an issue with family. However, if you are diagnosed with celiac disease through blood antibody testing and/or endoscopy with positive biopsy I would suggest you encourage first degree relatives to also purse testing because there is a significant chance (somewhere betwee 10% and almost 50%, depending on which studies you reference) that they will also have or will develop active celiac disease. Often, there are symptoms are absent or very minor until damage to the small bowel lining or other body systems becomes significant so be prepared that they may blow you off. We call this "silent celiac disease".

If you were off gluten for two months that would have been long enough to invalidate the celiac blood antibody testing. Many people make the same mistake. They experiment with the gluten free diet before seeking formal testing. Once you remove gluten from the diet the antibodies stop being produced and those that are already in circulation begin to be removed and often drop below detectable levels. To pursue valid testing for celiac disease you would need to resume gluten consumption equivalent to the amount found in 4-6 slices of wheat bread daily for at least two weeks, preferably longer. These are the most recent guidelines for the "gluten challenge". Without formal testing there is no way to distinguish between celiac disease and gluten sensitivity since their symptoms overlap. However, celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder that damages the small bowel lining, not true of gluten sensitivity. There is no test available for gluten sensitivity so celiac disease must first be ruled out. By the way, elevated liver enzymes was what led to my celiac diagnosis almost 25 years ago.

Then it does not seem to me that a gluten-related disorder is at the heart of your problems, unless that is, you have refractory celiac disease. But you did not answer my question about how long you had been eating gluten free before you had the blood antibody test for celiac disease done.
