Sushi?

Hi everyone,

Well, I am going on FOUR years gluten-free and I still haven't had sushi. I am going out with a friend tomorrow night for sushi and need to know what to watch out for. I need to be ultra-careful, since I am so sensitive to gluten and have had a few really big disasters after eating out in the past month.

Any SUSHI safety recommendations? I know to be careful of the soy sauce...but what else could pose hidden danger?

Thanks so much!

Hi Kat,

I love sashimi, and I ran across this discussion from 2005 on these boards during a bout of insomnia & bookmarked it. It looks really helpful & is REALLY detailed.

Good luck and post how it goes.

Hi!

Bring your own gluten free soy sauce. Be careful of the grilled eel, there's usually a sauce and it may be soy based. Also, don't eat the "fake" crab meat, it's processed with gluten products.

I usually stick to simple combinations.

Hi Kat!

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE sushi, and its one of the few things I seem to eat these days. I always always always eat it after getting sick, because it's not heavy on the tummy. As a matter of fact, I'm eating it tonight because I got sick yesterday :(

I normally get the Philly Roll, (my favorite), which is avocado, salmon and cream cheese. Avocado rolls are great, tuna rolls, spicy tuna, salmon rolls - all great!! As far as nigiri, salmon, tuna, etc. I stay away from the eel, because of the eel sauce, as well as the crab because its more often than not imitation. Everything else I've NEVER had a problem with.

Make sure you check, because some places serve it on wooden platters, which is no good. I guess soy sauce gets on them, and you can't ever really de-contaminate wood. You can bring your own soy sauce, or just go without, which is what I do. And if you are going with someone who is using soy sauce, just make sure you seperate all the sushi from each other before you start eating, otherwise their soy sauce will drip from the chopsticks onto the plate, or could touch a neighboring roll.

Hope this helps!!

Here is what I usually get:

Appetizer - Edamames - steamed salted beans in the pod

Sushi - Usually 6 pieces "Nigiri" style, which is traditional. Normally, I get Tuna, Salmon and Octopus. Depending on how they treat their seaweed (if they put soy sauce on it, which is common - the I don't get it), I sometimes get a Philly roll or california roll (substitute shrimp for crab).

mmmm... philly roll...

Damn Casien Intolerance!

I'm just scared of Sushi with my Gluten-free Casein-free diet and the language barrier.

I should get those dining cards.

Thank you all for sharing your experiences! And I am very thankful for that Thanksgiving article, Scott! I will look into it more as I plan my little dinner to bring with on the Holiday I'm also glad a lot of research has been done for Celiac. There's still a lot to learn and discover. And everyone has different symptoms. For me, I get a bad headache right away after eating gluten. Reoccurring migraines and visual disturbances were actually what got my PCP to order a Celiac Panel. I'm glad he did! I feel like when the inflammation hits my body it targets my head, gut, and lower back. I'm still figuring things out but that's what I've noticed after eating gluten! I have been eating gluten-free for almost two months now and haven't had such severe symptoms. I ate a couple accidents along the way but I'm doing a lot better

@Mari, did you read that second article that Scott linked? It is the most recently date one. "Researchers comparing rates of headaches, including migraines, among celiac patients and a healthy control group showed that celiac subjects experienced higher rates of headaches than control subjects, with the greatest rates of migraines found in celiac women.  Additionally, celiacs had higher rates of migraine than control subjects, especially in women. In fact, four out of five women with celiac disease suffered from migraines, and without aura nearly three-quarters of the time."

As far as I know and I have made severalonline searches, celiac disease disease has not been recognized as a cause of migraines or any eye problems. What I wrote must have been confusing.

Interesting, when I suffered for a few months with ectopics I noticed that carbohydrates would cause indigestion and bloating in my stomach, then that would lead to my heart skipping beats, and I could feel it in my throat, it was very unsettling.  My last serious bout of this was after eating a Muller Rice Pudding for breakfast.   I happened to be wearing a 48 hour halter at the time and cardiology picked it up, but they weren't worried about what they saw. There was some British doctor who'd made some videos on the Vagus nerve that I remember watching at the time which made sense of what I was experiencing, there did seem to be some sort of connection.
