Downs Celiac Boy - Taste In Mouth

My 18 year old Downs Syndrome celiac son, diagnosed 1 month ago, complained then and complains now of a bad taste in his mouth. Ideas?

Hi, my fiancee (who has Celiac) has been bothered with a bad taste in her mouth quite a bit since she first got sick with Celiac symptoms. It seems like it has been caused by different things at different times.

The things that we found to possibly causing the problem for her were:

  • when she was throwing up a lot (mostly pre-diagnosis) for obvious reasons
  • when she was on an antibiotic that gave her a really gross taste in her mouth
  • recently she had oral thrush (yeast infection in her mouth) that gave her a yucky taste in her mouth and also caused white patches in her mouth/tongue
  • I think when she gets dehydrated she also gets a bad taste in her mouth, maybe just from having a really dry mouth

I don't know if any of these apply to your son but I just wanted to let you know what we think the culprits were in our case so you could see if there was possibly a similar cause with your son. I hope you guys can figure out what is causing it.

Maybe it's just from the diet change since it has only been a month? I know when you make a big alternation to your diet you frequently have issues like halitosis and dry mouth and of course, the nasty taste in your mouth.

After I went gluten-free I found that barley malt would give me a metalic taste that would last quite some time. This may not be what is causing this but thought I would mention just in case. In the early stages I was consuming Rice Crispies and also did not check 'natural flavors' as much as I needed to. Wheat will be listed as an allergen now but barley (this is often labeled malt), oats and although I haven't seen it, rye can be in the flavors and not be disclosed on the label.

I think I must have had a bad taste in my mouth for decades and didn't realize what it was. After going off of gluten, my mouth tastes totally different. I can only describe it as a "neutral" taste.

      Yes, some people do get withdrawal from gluten but gluten withdrawal doesn't usually cause gut pain. Maybe more like general body aches and discomfort. We have articles on gluten withdrawal on this forum. You might do a search for them. Applesauce is very acidic and some brands have added vitamin C (ascorbic acid) which makes them more acidic.       Do you or anyone know alot about ibuprofen I wasn't sure if I was eating too much apple sauce. Something is making my pain so much worse I'm referring to the intense pins and needles in my feet and lower legs. Jaw actually has tardive dystonia and muscle spasms throughout my back Almost like an opposite effect that a pain reliever...

In other words, she accused me of lying and committing fraud... over $50! Please be careful with your orders and purchases here.

We have articles on gluten withdrawal on this forum. You might do a search for them. Applesauce is very acidic and some brands have added vitamin C (ascorbic acid) which makes them more acidic. This can damage the stomach lining if you eat it too often. Especially if your stomach lining is already compromised. Ibuprofen inhibits the body's ability to rebuild the stomach's protective mucosal lining. That's why it can cause peptic ulcers. As strange as it may sound, low level irritation/inflammation stimulates the body to rebuild the stomach lining. There are two steps in this rebuilding process known as COX 1 and COX 2. Ibuprofen represses both COX 1 and COX 2. Celecoxcib, a prescription anti inflammatory, inhibits only COX 2, making it less likely to cause damage to the gut lining.

I'm fairly new to this. Whatever is going on seems to be worsening  Do people get a withdrawal effect from gluten?  It's extremely painful 😖  I'll post that question or research on the site  Thank you everyone for responding
