Alerting Care Givers

I thought I'd share how I plan on alerting care givers at our church's nursery.

I'm going to make a diaper bag and embroider a Med Alert that states in bright bold Red and Black

FOOD ALLERGY (Might get an embroidery Medical Alert Symbol $8 to by the design)

NO GLUTEN

NO WHEAT

NO BARLEY

NO RYE

NO OATS

I never leave any message on my children with just the word gluten, you don't know how many times someone has said "oh, poor thing is diabetic" or "I try not to eat too much sugar either it makes me sick".

 We can't afford mistakes.

I also order things from cafepress.com. My older child is out growing his first set of Silly Yak Ts, so I just ordered him new ones. I ordered one for the baby that is just like above, nothing cute or fancy.

The baby may not stay in the nursery once he begins to crawl, I can't isolate him away from other crawler, after speaking to the director, the don't get that a child with wheat or oat proteins on their hands transfering it to a toy that my child then touches and then puts his fingers in his mouth is enough to make him sick. Unfortunately, my baby is a 4 finger sucker and will not take to a pacifier. A paci would make it a bit easier b/c he would not likely put anything in his mouth w the paci in it. And the nursery serves Cheerios and Goldfish.

I'm glad you brought that up, because I am a nervous wreck anymore when I go to church. I know people are hearing me when I tell them what she can't have and pack her her own snacks, but I still freak out. Our nursery is only one room. Honestly how can they keep a two year old away from the other kids snacks and I'm sure they don't wash the other kids hands after they have their snack. There has to be gluten everywhere. Should I be freaking out? I am new to this. Our kitchen at home is shared so maybe she gets more gluten there? I just feel the spontinaity(did I spell that right??) is gone from our life. I will never be able to relax again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What are the silly yak t's?

I thought this web site may be somewhat helpfu:l Open Original Shared Link. I also bought one of my dd's a med ID bracelet that states she is allergic to wheat, barley, rye, and oats.

I'm lucky enough that the nursery in our church is small. There are only 2-3 kids in there. They just bring fresh fruit and cheese and stuff like that for all the kids. Now if I could just figure out potlucks at church, I'd be happy!!

I always put a sticker on my daughter's back that says:

NO GLUTEN

No wheat

No barley

No rye

No oats

No malt

No Play-Doh

I like Sansgluten b/c they have shirts that have the Definition of Celiac. My older child likes SillyYaks b/c the purple Yak is cute. I found glutenfreekids b/c for my baby it is simple, straight forward and list out what gluten is.

I have for my older child a button "don't poison me" and a medical ID braclet that he never liked to wear that is now too small, I ended up putting it on the velcos of his shoe.

The baby is new territory for me. My other was 3 at dx. It is somewhat different in that the baby can't even ask "its gots wheats?"

There are also some allergy type ts and things available on the net.

Since I've been dealing with people in preschool and church nursery for a few years, I've found that people understand the word "allergy" more than they do "autoimmune genetic disorder". But you have people in general who will dismiss food allergies and even medically dx Celiac Disease as hog wash and not give a beep (mostly I find that is with my dh's family and a few of my own extended family members). A medical ID bracelet clearly identifies a serious medical problem and I find most people respect those.

If anyone is interested I'd be happy to design a T-shirt for the little ones. Not for profit, of course. I can design it and then pass the file along so that you can order one on cafe press. I just need to know what everyone would like on the shirt. Let me know if anyone's interested. Text only please.

That's a cool idea Angie.

we got a medical alert bracelet as well and my son refuses to wear them on his arm so I cut the chain off and placed it on a small key chain and attached it to his shoe. It works perfect. This also got me thinking and I was playing around with powerpoint today and made a few Gluten-free Casein-free logos to print out as he gets older to laminate and attach to backpacks and lunch boxes.

Very nice.

BTW - whatever happened to character lunch boxes that came with a thermos??? I was in a store that had all the school stuffs out and they wanted $9 for a zippered tote for a "lunch box", it didn't come with a drink thing at all!!! I guess I'm going on the internet to look for lunch totes that are large enough to fit the stainless steal thermos soup carrier and thermos and fruit carrier.

I know the gold old lunch boxes, now they are vintage and probably pretty pricey on ebay. Try thrift shops or garage sells. I wish I still had mine from childhood, however, I don't think my son would be into Miss Piggy or Strawberry shortcake...lol....

I used to have a sky blue Wizard of Oz lunch box. Boy did I love that. I did pick up a Wuzzles lunch box at a flea market one day for a quarter. The good old days when cartoons were decent, not like the crap they have out there today.

I was just diagnosed a few months ago and needed a lunchbox for work. I found a Silly Yak Pack at www.sansgluten.com Its a good size lunch cooler - no thermos, but it certainly fits my containers and I put my cell phone and wallet in the pocket. Its really great and I get to tell people about my celiac disease when it gets noticed.

I had a very rough month after diagnosis. No exaggeration, lost so much inflammatory weight, I looked like a bag of bones, underneath i had been literally starving to death. I did start feeling noticeably better after a month of very strict control of my kitchen and home. What are you eating for breakfast and lunch? I ignored my doc and ate oats, yes they were gluten free, but some brands are at the higher end of gluten free. Lots of celics can eat Bob's Red Mill gluten-free oats, but not me. I can now eat them, but they have to be grown and processed according to the "purity protocol" methods. I mail order them, Montana Gluten-Free brand. A food and symptoms and activities log can be helpful in tracking down issues. You might be totally aware, but I have to mention about the risk of airborne gluten. As the doc that diagnosed me warned . . Remember eyes, ears, nose, and mouth all lead to your stomach and intestines.  Are you getting any cross contamination? Airborne gluten? Any pets eating gluten (they eat it, lick themselves, you pet them...)? Any house remodeling? We live in an older home, always fixing something. I've gotten glutened from the dust from cutting into plaster walls, possibly also plywood (glues). The suggestions by many here on vitamin supplements also really helped me. I had some lingering allergies and asthma, which are now 99% gone. I was taking Albuterol inhaler every hour just to breathe, but thiamine in form of benfotiamine kicked that down to 1-2 times a day within a few days of starting it. Also, since cutting out inflammatory seed oils (canola, sunflower, grapeseed, etc) and cooking with real olive oil, avocado oil, ghee, and coconut oil, I have noticed even greater improvement overall and haven't used the inhaler in months! It takes time to weed out everything in your life that contains gluten, and it takes awhile to heal and rebuild your health. At first it's mentally exhausting, overwhelming, even obsessive, but it gets better and second nature.

Hi,  I care for my seven year old daughter with Celiac. After watching her for months, I have figured out that she has problem with two kinds of fats- animal fat and cooking oils. It basically makes her intestine sore enough that she feels spasms when she is upset. It only happens on days when she has eaten more fat than her usual every day diet. (Her usual diet has chia seeds, flaxseeds, and avocado/ pumpkin seeds for fat and an occasional chicken breast.) I stopped using cooking oils last year, and when I reintroduced eggs and dairy, both of which I had held off for a few months thinking it was an issue of the protein like some Celiac patients habe mentioned to be the case, she has reacted in the same fashion as she does with excess fats. So now I wonder if her reaction to dairy and eggs is not really because of protein but fat.   I don't really have a question, just wondering if anyone finds this familiar and if it gets better with time.  Thank you.

Hello, My name is Chanda and you are not the only one that gose through the same things. I have found that what's easiest for me is finding a few meals each week that last. I have such severe reactions to gluten that it shuts my entire body down. I struggle everyday with i can't eat enough it feels like, when I eat more I lose more weight. Make sure that you look at medication, vitamins and shampoo and conditioner also. They have different things that are less expensive at Walmart.

Thank you so much! I saw some tips around the forum to make a food diary and now that I know that the community also struggles with corn, egg and soy, the puzzle pieces came together! Just yesterday I tried eating eggs and yes, he’s guilty and charged. Those there are my 3 combo nausea troublemakers. I’m going to adjust my diet ☺️ Also thank you for the information about MCAS! I’m from South America and little it’s talked about it in here. It’s honestly such a game changer now for treatment and recovery. I know I’m free from SIBO and Candida since I’ve been tested for it, but I’m still going to make a endoscopy to test for H. Pylori and Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE). Thank you again!! Have a blessed weekend 🤍

Yes, I, too, have osteoporosis from years of malabsorption, too.  Thiamine and magnesium are what keep the calcium in place in the bones.  If one is low in magnesium, boron, selenium, zinc, copper, and other trace minerals, ones bone heath can suffer.  We need more than just calcium and Vitamin D for strong bones.  Riboflavin B 2, Folate B 9 and Pyridoxine B 6 also contribute to bone formation and strength.   Have you had your thyroid checked?  The thyroid is important to bone health as well.  The thyroid uses lots of thiamine, so a poorly functioning thyroid will affect bone heath.
