Newly Pregnant With Excruciating Join Pain

Hi everyone. I'm brand new to the forum. Hopefully someone will be able to help. I was diagnosed with celiac last fall and have been gluten free since November 9, 2006. I have been doing very well with very few problems. I just found out I am pregnant about 2 1/2 weeks ago and my husband and I are so excited. The problem is, for the past week I have been suffering from severe joint pain. It started in just my hips and elbow but now has spread to every joint in my body, the worst being my neck, ankle and knee. It was so bad last night I could not walk. My knee is also very red and so is my ankle, as if I had banged it on something. I called OB/GYN and she said this is not a normal pregnancy symptom. Has this happened to anyone else? Could it be a celiac symptom that has been brought on by pregnancy even though I'm gluten free? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

did your doctor ask you to come in? i think you need to talk to your OB/Gyn or PCP and run some blood tests if this is the only time something like this has ever happened to you. It could be a simple nutritional deficiency or something else. Are you sure you aren't ingesting gluten in a new vitamin or anything? Congratulations and good luck! I hope you are feeling better and you figure out what happened.

I have not heard of this in the beginning of pregnancy. When I was pregnant with my first I could hardly walk during the last month because of joint pain. Relaxin is a hormone that helps your hips spread and that can cause joint issues. It was terrible for me! Ask your OB if that is what they are talking about and if that is common in the beginning. I have never heard of it.

BTW: Congrats! I am so happy for you!

I strongly recommend 2 dedicated gluten free (gluten-free) restaurants in my area (East Bay of San Francisco Bay Area) (2025) -- Life is Sweet Bakery and Café in Danville. I've been a few times with friends and tried multiple entrees and salads. All very good and worth having again. I've also tried a number of their bakery goods. All extremely good (not just "good for gluten-free"). https://lifeissweetbakeryandcafe.com/ -- Kitara Kitchen in Albany (they have additional locations). I've been once and had the "Buritto Bowl". Six individual items plus a sauce. Outstanding. Not just "for gluten-free", but outstanding in its own right. Vibrant flavors, great textures. I can't wait to go back. https://www.kitava.com/location/kitava-albany/

I'm 67 and have been celiac for 17yrs. I had cataract surgery and they put a gluten lens in my eye. Through a lot of research, I found out about MMA acrylic...it contains gluten. It took 6 months for me to find a DR that would remove it and replace it with a gluten-free lens . I have lost some vision in that eye because of it . I also go to a prosthodontist instead of a regular dentist because they are specialized. He has made me a night guard and a few retainers with no issues... where my regular dentist didn't care. I have really bad reactions to gluten and I'm extremely sensitive, even to CC. I have done so much research on gluten-free issues because of these Drs that just don't care. Gluten is in almost everything shampoo, lotion, food, spices, acrylic, medication even communion wafers! All of my Drs know and believe me I remind them often.... welcome to my world!

If this applies geographically, in the U.K., physicians will often declare a diagnosis of celiac disease based on the TTG-IGA antibody blood test alone if the score is 10x normal or greater, which your score is. There is very little chance the endoscopy/biopsy will contradict the antibody blood test.

TTG IgA reference range 0.0 to 14.9 KU/L

What was the reference range for that test? Each lab uses different reference ranges so a raw score like that makes it difficult to comment on. But it looks like a rather large number.
