Hip And Pelvic Pain

i am 25 weeks pregnant. my hips have really been bothering me. i brought this up with my dr last time nd he said it is a normal pregnancy issue. i know it is but my hip really hurts! it hurts on the left sid and in the front pelivc side. it is to the point where i cant roll in bed, i have to sit straight up then slowy move my body into another postition. i have two children already and had minor pregnancy complaints with them. my dr said it gets worse with every baby. i asked if it could be my celiac, but he doesnt think that a food allergy can cause joint problems. my hands have also been cramping up, and my fingers have to be rubbed out just to work again. im getting worried that there is some vitamin im lacking or something. im really strick with my gluten-free diet, so is it possible that im still lacking something or that my body is not working right?

It really could be any number of things, but pregnancy is likely contributing to it. I had horrible hip, pelvic and back pain during my third pregnancy. I have since found out that I have Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, which has a huge impact on all the tissues of the body, especially joints. It was likely EDS that was the issue, and pregnancy hormones and the baby's position made it worse.

I agree w/ Michi8. Every pregnancy is different, so your symptoms from the 2nd or 3rd can be totally different from your 1st. Also, I had an orthoped tell me once that most pregnant women get tendonitis (to some degree) in their hips. This is because the pelvis is adjusting itself for birth, which can cause strain on the tendons. Sometimes gentle stretches and exercise can help.

If it's really bad, I'd see your normal doc and see if they can recommend some exercises. If you don't want to deal with docs, try googling "hip exercises pregnancy". A bunch of sites pop up with exercises/stretches that you can do during pregnancy to help limit the pain.

Its hard to really tell, "normal" preg things ,can be masking other non preg things. BUT it is a very common thing to get when you are preg esp with each preg things are more intence. I had the same thing when preg with both my kids ... however I had it before too but more mild to moderate. And this was pre celiac diag. Heat would always help me ... I would put the heating pad on low (even on my hands...prob sounds crazy...but it helped). The book WHat to do when your expecting offers some advice on what you can do too.

I should add...I had chiropractic adjustments throughout my third pregnancy, which helped a lot with the pain. If you go that route, find a chiropractor who is trained to work with pregnant patients. There are special techniques that help with alignment of the pelvis and encourages the baby to settle in a good position. There is also the Webster Technique which is very good for helping turn a breech baby...it's very gentle, and is not risky like an external version is.

well i feel alot better knowing other pregnant people have had the same problem. its hard to tell whats a celiac disease thing lately and whats a preggo thing lol. i see my doc on mon so i will ask him about what excersices i can do that might help. i also bought a plug in heating pad and that helped at night last night.

i think i was freaked out because when i get glutened it makes my joints get real stiff and hurt. so i was worried because i was sure i havent messed up on my diet but it still felt like i was "cheating" on it!

@Ginger38, Have you been checked for nutritional deficiencies, besides iron?   Celiac disease causes inflammation which results in nutritional deficiencies.   Iron needs Thiamine and the other B vitamins to make new red blood cells.   Iodine and thiamine deficiencies affect the thyroid.  The thyroid is one organ that uses lots of thiamine.   Vitamin D deficiency leads to hormonal problems, including menstrual problems.  Vitamin D needs Thiamine to activate it.   Heart palpitations and chest pain after gluten exposure can be evidence of poor digestion and a drop in available thiamine.  Consumption of any  foods high in carbohydrates can cause a drop in thiamine.  This is called high...

Okay, Thank you!! I already have thyroid problems and my total iron binding capacity is high which usually means low iron but everything else was normal, lower end but “normal” my hair falls out and my nails won’t grow without breaking but nothing is being treated iron wise.  I have started having palpitations and chest pain,  both of which seem to be attributed to exposure to gluten. I’ve also been having a lot of nightmares, anxiety, numbness and tingling, brain fog, spotting between cycles and acne. Idk if all those are relatable to gluten / celiac but I’m concerned  I’ve finally tipped my body/ immune system into a bad place. Is there anyway to detox and heal faster or treat...

@Alibu, Start with this study... High-dose thiamine supplementation improves glucose tolerance in hyperglycemic individuals: a randomized, double-blind cross-over trial https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/23715873/ "Conclusion/interpretation: Supplementation with high-dose thiamine may prevent deterioration in fasting glucose and insulin, and improve glucose tolerance in patients with hyperglycemia. High-dose thiamine supplementation may prevent or slow the progression of hyperglycemia toward diabetes mellitus in individuals with impaired glucose regulation." They used 100 mg of thiamine three times a day.  They don't say which kind of thiamine was used. ...

@knitty kitty I see, thank you!!  Yes, basically the biopsy just said "normal villous architecture."  It didn't give any kind of Marsh score at all, but it sounds like it would be a 0 based on the biopsy report, which is why he's saying it's Latent or Potential celiac.  It's just weird because I know in Europe if I was a child, they wouldn't even do the biopsy, so how does this system make any sense?? I have had an A1c and it's normal.  I do know that I have insulin resistance, however, so there's that. Wow, thank you for all this information!!!  I have a lot of reading to do!

That is one issue but the bigger issue may be the human tendency to rationalize it all away without an official diagnosis such that you keep falling off the gluten free bandwagon. But there is the option of going for the gluten challenge in a more robust way and getting retested.
