I'm So Upset!

I am really annoyed, frustrated, aggravated, etc.,etc.

She told me she found a new type of corn tortilla and she would like to make me a hamberger type tortilla with salsa and cheese. I asked if she read the ingredients on the label and she said 'yes, it is fine' and I said are your sure and she said 'yes'. So after I took 2 bites she said 'stop eating it, it has wheat in it'. She really didn't know and ended up double checking after I started eating it.

I know she didn't mean it and was upset that it happened...but I feel like who can you trust if you can't trust your own mother? I guess other's don't really understand unless they deal with it everyday, no matter who they are!

Now, my stomach is hurting a little, but more than anything else it is bloated and feels like its stretched out 3 inches in 2 1/2 hours. THe only other symptom I have so far is that I burped about 10 times after eating it.

Ugh!

I am sorry that you where glutend. When I have been glutend it takes a few hours to set in. I always feel bad insiting on reading the lables , esp since ppl are just trying to be nice, but can't be too careful. Hope you feel better soon.

I hope you feel better soon. I've glutened my daughter and have felt horrible for it (ordered her ice cream without thinking about cc from the scoop). If I could have, I would have suffered for her. It is all a learning experience and I bet your mom will ALWAYS double check everything now.

I'm so sorry. Waiting for the reaction to start is the worst. Your mom is miserable right now too. Maybe you would want to talk with your mom about when and how you want to try new foods?

Feel better

Thanks for the understanding replies. I will talk with my mom again about it. I know she tries to be careful and my sister has been celiac for 10 years so she does know all about it. I was pretty upset immediately after it happened, but saw she was getting upset so I said "well, at least now we will know how I react". and tried to make light of it. She is just not always careful enough, it is her personality on many things.

We finally convinced mom to get tested. She had bloodwork which came up negative, but she also started cutting out gluten (which we told her not to do) prior to the bloodwork. She's getting the endoscope test in 2 weeks. She is diabetic and has so many symptoms. She was even tested by an allergist many years ago who told her to stay away from wheat. She hasn't and said she gets a funny head every time she eats wheat, especially whole wheat.

This morning I have a sick feeling stomach, am having horrible allergy symptoms (stuffy nose, sneezing, itchy throat) and feel constipated. Not sure if it's because of the gluten, but going on the diet made my allergy symptoms almost gone. I can count on one hand the amount of time I've had to take allergy meds in 2 months and I used to take them regularly. I know when I used to drink regular beer it would cause the same exact symptoms.

Does anyone else get horrible allergy symptoms as a result of getting glutened?

I do. Claritin is gluten free and so is the equate brand found at walmart.

I do too - before I found out I had Celiac, when I would drink beer, I would have allergy symptoms too. Benedryl was my friend LOL

Thanks for the replies! I thought it was just me. I've been on Clarinex and Nasonex almost steadily for quite a while, but when I went gluten free I hardly need them any more.

I didn't make the beer connection until I had a Redbridge beer just before going gluten free. I couldn't believe I could breathe well after drinking it. That's when my sister said she thought I must be allergic to barley.

Do you think we have wheat, barley allergies as well as celiac?

What other symptoms do you get when eating gluten by mistake? I never had the 'D' problem or lost weight, I was gaining.

What Thiamine Hydrochloride brand do you take? Is it like the other vitamins I have added? What brand Tryptophan and amount do you take. Thanks

I would not think store bought yogurt would contain gluten unless it possibly could be through an added flavoring or coloring ingredient. Otherwise, it should be naturally gluten free.  Keep in mind that some companies are capitalizing on people's fears and ignorance (nothing personal intended) by labeling foods "gluten free" that are just that way by the nature of what they are. They are hoping to create a marketing edge over their competitors by adding "gluten free" because they know it may catch attention of those new to the celiac/gluten sensitivity experience without having to cost them anything in the way of changing their manufacturing process or doing testing.

I believe the GFCO does use a common logo for certified gluten free products (those containing not more that 10ppm of gluten) but nothing universal yet from the FDA for standard gluten free products (those containing not more that 20ppm).

I have a One Pot and decided to start using it one day. I was hesitant at first making my own yogurt, but was surprised at how easy it was. I like mine better too.

Because I spend so much time reading every word on all food packaging, I personally would greatly appreciate it if there was one common gluten-free symbol written in large-enough text, and always located in the same place. That alone will make shopping easier and faster. I dread having to buy packaged food. Thank you very much for asking,
