My Teen Is gluten-free For 72 Hours -- And Starting To Get Outbreak Of Rash!

We got negative blood work, but positive DQ5 and DQ7 genes, and positive enterolab stool test.

My child agreed to go gluten free (along with her sister, who just got positive enterolab results).

They joined their brother and me, who have been on the diet for a while.

You know how hard it is to give up stuff in the beginning....it must be extra hard for her because she is doubtful that the diet will work and she does not connect her symptoms (migraines, very bad rashes, low energy and chronic anxiety) to gluten, plus she is 14. Anyway, she has made it 72 hours despite three social events this weekend. I know she kept gluten-free.

Her "reward" is an outbreak of eczema -- including on her FACE. She's very frustrated, not to mention so itchy that she can't concentrate, plus is now starting to think that eating gluten is keeping her from breaking out.

She went gluten-free for three months last spring, then started eating it in the summer and within one month had her first -- a terrible-- suspected DH breakout. It was bad. She blames everything ,including her scarring on going gluten-free in the first place.

Anyone heard about rash flares when giving up gluten? I will probably post this in the DH forum, but I started here because she is beginning the diet again.

Is there something I can do? Tell her?

Thanks in advance to everyone.......

I am sorry she is going thru this it has to be tough.

I didnt expirience the DH when I actually knew what it was and havent had an "episode" in a while so assume its the gluten-free helping with that....

You need to support her choices in life that I know, if she makes a mistake help her thru it, and this includes her diet choices.... she needs to do this for herself and until she realizes its for her own good she wont co-operate, she will "sneak" gluten outside the home, same goes for just about everything else in a teens life as well....

Best of luck and hope she comes around. until then, be patient even though its going to be one of the hardest things you do!

I know it is going to be hard for a teenager. It has been a bummer for her brother at times, and he's been gluten-free for 4 years. Thank you for your words of inspiration.

I am trying to figure out if anyone knows about rash flares within the first few days of going gluten-free.

I don't know why a rash would be starting when she is not exposed to gluten.....

Why would she be itching now?

Hi 'keepinthefaith'

Sorry to hear she's feeling so crapy, and hope she will re-consider going and staying gluten-free.

I also have DH but mine only flared when I got glutened :(

I know you say she was total gluten free and then the rash came,it takes several days maybe even weeks for the DH to go away, mine took 6 months gluten-free and it slowly went away, I haven't had a flare since I went totaly gluten-free (check her hair products, soaps, lotions, make-up perfume and all tolietries )

I won't cheat under any circustances no matter how tempting it is !

My oldest son only flares up with DH if he would eat bread or drink beer.

My youngest son on the other hand would break out with even the wrong soap.

She may have gotten cross contaminated some how and wasn't aware she did :(

Being a total family with DH we have only had flares when we r Glutened, so try to check and re-check all labels and what she comes in contac with.

As far as the itching we use Ting (we purchase it from Wal-mart in the area around foot sprays and such) or Benadryl. (if she takes the pills don't use the cream at the same time or she could get too big of a dose)

Good Luck and hang in there !

I sure hope she gets relief soon I know how bad it tiches

He is not just a psychiatrist.  He is also a neuroscientist.  And yes, I have already read those studies.   I agree with benfotiamine.  This is short term while glutened/inflammation occurs.  As I had already mentioned, these symptoms no longer exist when this phase passes.  And yes, I know that celiac is a disease of malnutrition.  We are working with a naturopath.

Please do more research before you settle on nicotine. Dr. Paul New house is a psychiatrist.  His latest study involves the effect of nicotine patches on Late Life Depression which has reached no long term conclusions about the benefits.   Effects of open-label transdermal nicotine antidepressant augmentation on affective symptoms and executive function in late-life depression https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/39009312/   I'm approaching the subject from the Microbiologist's point of view which shows nicotine blocks Thiamine B1 uptake and usage:   Chronic Nicotine Exposure In Vivo and In Vitro Inhibits Vitamin B1 (Thiamin) Uptake by Pancreatic Acinar Cells https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/26633299/   While supplementation with thiamine in the form Benfotiamine can protect from damage done by  nicotine: Benfotiamine attenuates nicotine and uric acid-induced vascular endothelial dysfunction in the rat https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/18951979/   I suggest you study the beneficial effects of Thiamine (Benfotiamine and TTFD) on the body and mental health done by Dr. Derrick Lonsdale and Dr. Chandler Marrs.  Dr. Lonsdale had studied thiamine over fifty years.   Hiding in Plain Sight: Modern Thiamine Deficiency https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC8533683/ I suggest you read their book Thiamine Deficiency Disease, Dysautonomia, and High Calorie Malnutrition.     Celiac Disease is a disease of malabsorption causing malnutrition.  Thiamine and benfotiamine: Focus on their therapeutic potential https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10682628/

Thanks for your response.  Everything you mentioned he is and has been doing.  Tobacco is not the same as nicotine.  Nicotine, in the form of a patch, does not cause gastrointestinal irritation.  Smoking does. He is not smoking.  Please do your research before stating false information. Dr. Paul Newhouse has been doing research on nicotine the last 40 years at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Im so frustrated and still getting the run around trying to reprove my celiac disease which my past primary ignored for 25 years.I understand that theres a ray of medical that doctors are limited too but not listening and telling the patient ( me) that im not as sensitive as I think and NOT celiac!Correction Mr white coat its not what I think but for cause and affect and past test that are not sticking in my medical records.I get sick violently with foods consumed, not eating the foods will show Im fabulous. After many blood draws and going through doctors I have the HLA- DQ2 positive which I read in a study that Iran conducted that the severity in celiac is in that gene.Im glutenfree and dealing with related issues which core issue of celiac isn't addressed. My skin, right eye, left leg diagestive issues affected. I have high blood pressure because im in pain.Im waisting my time on trying to reprove that Im celiac which is not a disease I want, but unfortunately have. It  has taken over my life personally and professionally. How do I stop getting medically gaslight and get the help needed to bounce back if I ever do bounce back to normal? I thought I was in good care with " celiac specialist " but in her eyes Im good.Im NOT.Sibo positive, IBS, Chronic Fatigue just to name a few and its all related to what I like to call a ghost disease ( celiac) since doctors don't seem to take it seriously.
