Xmas Nuts...then Diarreah

Hi All

The day after I eat Christmas nuts (the ones you have to crack yourself) I get bad diarreah. Anybody else have this problem.

I'm also wondering about an intolerance to corn, potatoes and white rice. Can we have the same reaction to them...just trying to wean out some foods.

Thanks

Deborah

I have had problems with seeds and nuts and popcorn early on in the healing process and particularly when my system is sensitive after I've had dairy.

I don't know about the nuts. But my reaction to corn, potatoes and rice is very close to being the same as my reaction to gluten. So yes, it is possible.

The way to test for those is to take them all out for two weeks, and then reintroduce them one at a time, five days apart (in case of delayed reactions, which I always get).

I think she means brazil nuts, hazel nuts, almonds, walnuts, etc in their shells so you crack them yourself. They're often in bulk bins in grocery stores around Christmas time, but they are in a shell so no worries about CC.

Oats naturally contain a protein called avenin, which is similar to the gluten proteins found in wheat, barley, and rye. While avenin is generally considered safe for most people with celiac disease, some individuals, around 5-10% of celiacs, may also have sensitivity to avenin, leading to symptoms similar to gluten exposure. You may fall into this category, and eliminating them is the best way to figure this out. Some people substitute gluten-free quinoa flakes for oats if they want a hot cereal substitute. If you are interested in summaries of scientific publications on the topic of oats and celiac disease, we have an entire category dedicated to it which is here: https://www.celiac.com/celiac-disease/oats-and-celiac-disease-are-they-gluten-free/
