Rice Dream And Caramel Color

Good evening everyone,

I am rather new to this website and new to Celia disease. My son was diagnosed last week and I am confused on what is good to use and what is not. I have been using rice dream but only the ones that do not state made with .02% gluten. I read on some of them that it has gluten so I am confused but my son is milk, egg and soy tolerant as well so Rice milk is our only option. Since he has all those allergies the almond milk is out because it contains soy lechitin. I feel backed against the wall. What about Westsoy Rice milk? It does not state gluten free but it does say lactose and dairy free. I did not read anything bad but am unsure what to think. What about caramel color? My sons french fries say made with canola oil and has caramel color and annatto color. Is that ok? I am sorry to ask so many questions but it is all very overwhelming. Lastly, What do you think about Prego sauce. It does not state gluten free but had no ingredients that are an issue for my son. Should I trust it? I really appreciate this website and am sending big hugs to you all. Have a great night and thanks for reading my post.

Hugs Hugs,

Rosa

Caramel color usually isn't an issue if the product is made in the US. Call/email the company if you are unsure.

I use Prego sauce....the traditional variety I know for sure is gluten-free.

It can be overwhelming at first but once you get the hang of it, it is easier.

Good Luck!

Rosa,

It is SO frustrating in the beginning. Here is a listing of Companies who will clearly list all gluten (as in wheat, barley, malt and rye).

It does get better. :)

You could try hemp milk for your son. I was tree nut intolerant for a while and I love hemp milk now. Also, Trader Joe's or Whole Foods brands of rice milk are gluten free...not .2% or whatever of barley.

Hope that helps, and it will get easier. :)

Thank you so much for your responses ladies. It really helps to not feel alone (not that I wish this on anyone). Lisa I really appreciate the website I will visit it right now. Thanks again everyone and hugs hugs to you all. Have a great night.

Hugs Hugs,

Rosa

Yes, I love hemp milk (the Living Harvest brand; I find Hemp Bliss nasty -- people's tastes can vary, I just mention it because, in case you try one and don't like it, well, the other one is different).

Does your son react to soy lecithin? Enterolab told me I could probably tolerate it. It is pure fat, so it doesn't contain the protein. If you look at soy allergy descriptions, you will see them say that you probably can have soy lecithin and perhaps some types of soybean oil as well. Of course, some people DO react to soy lecithin, so you have to be alert to the possibility.

This doctor is obviously under educated about Celiac Disease. Deficiencies that can cause oral thrush (Candidiasis) mouth ulcers: Thiamine B1 B12 Folate Zinc Vitamin C B2 B6 Iron Malabsorption Syndrome is often co-morbid with Celiac Disease causing multiple deficiencies of the essential vitamins and minerals.  Low or deficient  Vitamin D is almost always found in undiagnosed Celiac Disease. "Over 900 genes have been reported as regulated by vitamin D"  Possible Role of Vitamin D in Celiac Disease Onset  "The overall prevalence rate of vitamin D deficiency was 41.6%, with the highest rate seen in blacks (82.1%), followed by Hispanics (69.2%)."    Prevalence and correlates of vitamin D deficiency in US adults

I saw the thing for testing for gluten when at public places.I absolutely love but I wonder if they would come up with a bracelet or necklace that can detect gluten in the air.I would LOVE that, i know i get debilitating migraine from smelling gluten wheat what have you, all I know is when I go into places like Chevron- gluten Subway, migraine, Costco that food smell of nasty gluten- migraine and same with Walmart subway.I absolutely HATE im that sensitive, my body reacts.Sadly medical hasn't taken core issue of celiac being an issue considering glutenfree ever since 1994 and in their eyes not because they didn't diagnose me. I am and wish I wasn't. If there was a detector of gluten in the air it would make a world of difference.

Oops! @Staticgypsy, I’ll get the book! Thank you!

Thank you so much for your help, @trents and @Staticgypsy! I so appreciate your thoughts. My diet is high in foods with oxalates and I don’t notice any issues there. If eliminating gluten from my diet had changed anything I’d be happy to just keep on the gluten-free diet, but with eating gluten several times with no rash, and having a rash when I was many years into gluten-free eating (and was much more careful at that point), I’m just baffled. Many, many thanks to you both.
