Help Accidently Glutened My Son

My son drank half a bottle "function House Call". I had checked all of them I thought but this one clearly says Natural Flavors (contains gluten).

Should I make him throw it up ? Have ipecac.

We just got dx 11.29.07 and he is still real bad, but I don't want to kill any progress we have made.

All of a sudden at dinner he said I don't feel so well and got up, so I grabbed the bottle, but it was too late.

Thanks,

Mary

How old is he?

I'm not sure if throwing up would matter. Chances are if he consumed gluten and is already affected by it...

I know that when I was glutened I drank as much water as possible, hoping it would wash away whatever gluten was in there.

Others have recommended the B.R.A.T diet which worked for me (I think) Thats banana, rice, applesauce and tea/toast

I think you want to eat non-gluten foods like the above to balance the gluten that was consumed.

I am fairly new at this and don't normally give advice but I saw your post and felt like I might know enough to reply.

Good Luck and help will be on the way soon!

You could also click on someones profile pics and send them a message. There are a lot of experienced people here. Look at how many posts they have done. Thats who you should contact.

Thanks for the reply, he is 10. I had Celiac ADD for the past few days. Decided to try and get him to throw up, but probably was not a good idea. He ended up with blood dots under his eyes the next day.

His diarrhea is better, but I have decided I want the endoscopy as he is having other issues with his stomach.

I still second guess the decision every day as I know he has Celiac but for school, and Social Security it is a necessity. His school has been nice, but I know as soon as you ask for accomodations they may ask for the report. And of course the GI doc says, sorry gold standard need biopsy.

throwing up won't do a lot of good, might change the dose a bit if it's *right* after, and is solid food, but in general, just supportive measures until the symptoms pass.

I agree on the vomiting not helping unless its very close to when ingested... then it will only make the amount smaller rather than stop the symptoms altogether.... not to mention sometimes just thinking about doing that sends shivers up my spine, never have been able to force myself to do that...

I also believe I recall you said your child was 10.... they need to also start taking control of their diet and not "assume" you checked for them, you wont always be there and they need to know what to look for or they may go to a friends house or on a camping trip with the neighbors... knowing a couple 10 year olds, this will not be something they will want to do but it is going to be easier for them to learn now rather than later.

Just a thought, I guess the "natural flavor" was gluten considering his reaction.

But a lot of times, i have called the company and its doesn't always mean gluten is in there.

So far, the public school has been very supportive of my daughter's gluten issues and I have not had to send any evidence to support that. I do have to pack her lunch everyday since the food they serve is a joke!

@xxnonamexx, There's labeling on those Trubar gluten free high fiber protein bars that say: "Manufactured in a facility that also processes peanuts, milk, soy, fish, WHEAT, sesame, and other tree nuts." You may want to avoid products made in shared facilities.   If you are trying to add more fiber to your diet to ease constipation, considering eating more leafy green vegetables and cruciferous vegetables.  Not only are these high in fiber, they also are good sources of magnesium.  Many newly diagnosed are low in magnesium and B vitamins and suffer with constipation.  Thiamine Vitamin B1 and magnesium work together.  Thiamine in the form Benfotiamine has been shown to improve intestinal health.  Thiamine and magnesium are important to gastrointestinal health and function.

Welcome to celiac.com @sha1091a! Your experience is a very common one. Celiac disease is one the most underdiagnosed and misdiagnosed medical conditions out there. The reasons are numerous. One key one is that its symptoms mimic so many other diseases. Another is ignorance on the part of the medical community with regard to the range of symptoms that celiac disease can produce. Clinicians often are only looking for classic GI symptoms and are unaware of the many other subsystems in the body that can be damaged before classic GI symptoms manifest, if ever they do. Many celiacs are of the "silent" variety and have few if any GI symptoms while all along, damage is being done to their bodies. In my case, the original symptoms were elevated liver enzymes which I endured for 13 years before I was diagnosed with celiac disease. By the grace of God my liver was not destroyed. It is common for the onset of the disease to happen 10 years before you ever get a diagnosis. Thankfully, that is slowly changing as there has developed more awareness on the part of both the medical community and the public in the past 20 years or so. Blessings!

@EndlessSummer, You said you had an allergy to trees.  People with Birch Allergy can react to green beans (in the legume family) and other vegetables, as well as some fruits.  Look into Oral Allergy Syndrome which can occur at a higher rate in Celiac Disease.   Switching to a low histamine diet for a while can give your body time to rid itself of the extra histamine the body makes with Celiac disease and histamine consumed in the diet.   Vitamin C and the eight B vitamins are needed to help the body clear histamine.   Have you been checked for nutritional deficiencies?

I found out the age of 68 that I am a celiac. When I was 16, I had my gallbladder removed when I was 24 I was put on a medication because I was told I had fibromyalgia.   going to Doctor’s over many years, not one of them thought to check me out for celiac disease. I am aware that it only started being tested by bloodwork I believe in the late 90s, but still I’m kind of confused why my gallbladder my joint pain flatulent that I complained of constantly was totally ignored. Is it not something that is taught to our medical system? It wasn’t a Doctor Who asked for the test to be done. I asked for it because of something I had read and my test came back positive. My number was quite high. Are there other people out here that had this kind of problems and they were ignored?

Welcome to celiac.com, @EndlessSummer! Do you react to all vegetables or just specific kinds or families of them? What you describe with green beans sounds like it has an anaphylaxis component. Like you, walnuts are a problem for me. They will often give me a scratchy throat so I try to avoid them. Does it matter if the vegies are raw or will-cooked in how you react to them?
