Glutened But No Symptoms

Hi! I really need some wisdom from the forum.

We dined out Saturday at Carrabba's and I ordered my usual. I took my digestive enzyme and a lactaid pill.

The gluten-free sicilian chicken soup came and it was cold, so I sent it back. The new hot soup came back; I took 3 or 4 bites and then noticed that the soup had pasta in it (it was all the way at the bottom). I didn't eat any of the pasta, only the broth. I was stunned, I couldn't believe it was happening. I almost cried. All I could think was that the next 2 to 3 weeks would be horrible with pain (primarily pancreas and gallbladder working overtime to digest anything).

It's Monday and the pain is almost unnoticable. Have I misdiagnosed myself? I should be miserable. What do you think? Is it possible that I've healed enough that I'm only scratching the surface?

Btw, 13 months gluten-free, I am finally gaining weight, self-diagnosed.

Thanks to anyone with advice.

Kim

Could it have been rice pasta in the soup ?

I don't react consistantly either, nor with the same amount of reaction that many people report having here, but that is both a blessing and a curse, because sometimes I won't know immediately I had something cross contaminated, or I will tend to be a little .... cavalier at times with restaurant food that is not "certified" gluten free. But then other times I eat what is supposed to be safe and get nailed anyway. Life's like that, so I try very hard not to be paranoid and get upset, a good attitude helps.

Hopefully, you're "out of the woods," but it's sometimes taken up to a week for me to experience significant digestive effects from known gluten exposure. In fact, the usual time for me is 3-5 days.

I know I shouldn't be complaining...I'm just overreacting. I emailed my husband's g-ma who is celiac too (yep, my son has it on both sides) and she said that perhaps my gut is healed enough to withstand it and perhaps the poisonous pasta wasn't in the broth that long.

I'm just waiting for the pain to come on...crazy as it sounds. Definately overreacting.

Thanks for your input. Just a warning, even if ording off gluten-free menu to always, always check before ingest. Oh, that's good. Check b-4 Ingest.

Now that you have healed, sometimes your body can handle a little hear and there without giving you too noticeable of symptoms. If there is anything else your body may be fighting off or it is just having a bad day, they could be more noticeable. however, all of my reading has also implied that even in the smallest of amounts with little or no reaction, it can still increase inflammation, which I am sure you know is what causes or increases your risk of so many other diseases....etc. So be careful, and just be thankful...Often just the cross contamination will not bother me in a way I notice, although my husband can tell because I get a little mean and grumpy and cry alot...kind of like PMS....

You might try Heallix.  It's a silver solution with fulvic acid. I just put the solution on with a cotton ball.  It seemed to stop the nerve pain. Again,  not in your eyes or ears.   Go to heallix.com to read more about it and decide for yourself Also,  I do think nerve and celiac combined have a lot to do with your susceptibility to shingles breaking out.

Celiac disease requires both genetic potential and a triggering stress event to activate the genes. Otherwise it remains dormant and only a potential problem. So having the genetic potential is not deterministic for celiac disease. Many more people have the genes than actually develop the disease. But if you don't have the genes, the symptoms are likely being caused by something else.

Yes, i pulled raw ancetry data and saw i have 2/3 markers for DQ2.2 but have heard from friends in genetics that this raw data can be wildly innacurate

Thanks, I’m still dealing with the pain and tingling and itching and feeling like bugs or something crawling around on my face and scalp. It’s been a miserable experience. I saw my eye doc last week, the eye itself was okay, so they didn’t do anything. I did take a 7 day course of an antiviral. I’m hoping for a turnaround soon! My life is full of stress but I have been on / off the gluten free diet for the last year , after being talked into going back on gluten to have a biopsy, that looked okay. But I do have positive antibody levels that have been responsive  to a gluten free diet. I can’t help but wonder if the last year has caused all this.

I don't think any apps are up to date, which is exactly why this happened to you. Most of the data in such apps is years old, and it doesn't get updated in real time. Ultimately there is no substitution for learning to read labels. The following two lists are very helpful for anyone who is gluten sensitive and needs to avoid gluten when shopping. It's very important to learn to read labels and understand sources of hidden gluten, and to know some general information about product labelling--for example in the USA if wheat is a possible allergen it must be declared on a product's ingredient label like this: Allergens: Wheat.
