Multiple Food Allergies- Not Sure What To Do

i was tested for 100 different food allergies and came back positive for about 30% of the foods with varying degrees of sensitivity. Ive been avoiding all of the positive foods and eating the negatives in different combinations. thing is im sure im sensitive to a lot more foods that werent on the testing panel so i dont know what to eat or what not to eat and its driving me crazy. has anyone had any experience with this? I also find that im sensitive to the supplements my doc wants me to take which are supposed to support GI health. if i cant even tolerate these supplements how will i ever heal? thanks

How were you tested??

I find skin tests to show a lot of false positives.

no it was a blood Ab test and also did stool for casein, soy, and gluten

Hey Jason,

I went through the same problem you are having. I am allergic to basically everything, and I no longer eat because of it. I'm on IV Nutrition. But don't panic, I'm sure you won't end up like me.

I'm guessing that your food allergies are more of a recent development rather than something you have had since birth. If that's the case, you should look into Candida overgrowth. Candidiasis (and Celiac Disease) causes leaky gut, which allows food protein to leak into your bloodstream. In the bloodstream, the food proteins are considered "invaders", and an allergic reaction ensues. So if you treat the Candidiasis, you heal the leaky gut. So then the food proteins can no longer make it to the bloodstream, which means no more allergic reaction. I would suggest finding a doctor who can diagnose and treat Candidiasis. It's definitely worth checking into. Good luck,

I do not take supplements, I think you heal by only eating the things that you tolerate, getting plenty of rest, & exercise. I have had a lifetime of allergies, including many many food allergies. I was wheat free for 10 years before I was gluten-free, well I would eat wheat occasionally thinking it was okay because it was just another food allergy. That was before I learned about gluten. I tested allergic to barley & oats when I was 25. so I had a lifetime of not eating those grains. I have been gluten-free for 3 1/2 years now & my inhalant allergies are almost non-existant and my food allergies are mostly gone.

all this to lead up to my thought that your food allergies should get better after you have been gluten-free for awhile. But you have to be strictly gluten-free with no CC & I would say mostly grain free, because most grains have cross contamination. Until your body reaches the state that it is not in hyper auto immune mode, you will continue to be "allergic" to a ton of foods. That is not to say that a true anaphylactic type allergy like a peanut allergy will ever change, though there is some thought that once you are healed & gluten-free that the chances that it will kill you is lessened, just lessened not gone...

You should try to make a list of the foods that you seem to tolerate well & stick to those for a couple of weeks & slowly add something in. You will not be able to eat the gluten free breads, processed foods etc. More like baked chicken, white rice, sweet potatoes, cooked carrots, cooked cabbage or raw if you tolerate it, jello, popcicles, baked fish, boiled eggs, apple sauce, bananas... that type of thing. Once you are eating these types of foods & feel okay, then add in another food.

I would beware of dairy, soy, grains other than rice & cornmeal, peas, beans, peanut butter, citrus, mushrooms, sodas, coffee & tea, white potatoes, anything processed and anything that you react to.

You will need to continue to learn about foods & how they work & alter your diet accordingly, hopefully this will not take too long & you will feel much better soon. It is all a little overwhelming when you do not fell well to begin with...

I was tested for allergies right before the allergist put me on the elimination diet. I was tested for 99 substances and showed up allergic to 98, everything except beech trees and they don't make for an interesting diet. :D The allergist said my immune system was in hyperdrive and that since gluten was in every tissue in my body, or at least the antibodies were, that my body was literally reacting to everything. Including itself. He was pretty sure most of the other allergies would resolve once I healed and he was right.

It did take some time but once we got all the gluten out of everything and I had some time to heal I was left with only one or two allergies. This also got rid of my asthma reactions and I have never had to even refill any scripts for my inhalor or my singulair.

Hopefully this will follow for you.

At first I had a lot of set backs but after a couple of months I started on a really 'pure' diet, no processed foods at all just straight from nature fruit, veggies, meats, nuts, rice etc. I did use one ingredient frozen veggies but that was it for processed for a couple of months. It made the risk of CC nil, my house is gluten-free also) and when I added more processed stuff back in it made it easy to tell if I reacted.

I hope you start to feel better soon, it can take a bit. But it takes us years of illness to get so bad that celiac is even thought of.

      You might consider asking for a referral to a RD (Registered Dietician) to help with food choices and planning a diet. Even apart from any gluten issues, you will likely find there are some foods you need to avoid because of the shorter bowel but you may also find that your system may make adjustments over time and that symptoms may improve.

      Losing 12" of your small bowel is going to present challenges for you in nutritional uptake because you are losing a significant amount of nutritional absorption surface area. You will need to focus on consuming foods that are nutritionally dense and also probably look at some good supplements. If indeed you are having issues with gluten you will need to educate yourself as to how gluten is hidden in the food supply. There's more to it than just avoiding the major sources of gluten like bread and pasta. It is hidden in so many things you would never expect to find it in like canned tomato soup and soy sauce just to name a few. It can be in pills and medications.  Also, your "yellow diarrhea, constipation and bloating" though these are classic signs of a gluten disorder, could also be related to the post surgical shorter length of your small bowel causing incomplete processing/digestion of food.

      There are two gluten-related disorders that share many of the same symptoms but differ in nature from each other. One is known as celiac disease or "gluten intolerance". By nature, it is an autoimmune disorder, meaning the ingestion of gluten triggers the body to attack it's own tissues, specifically the lining of the small bowel. This attack causes inflammation and produces antibodies that can be detected in the blood by specific tests like the TTG-IGA test you had. Over time, if gluten is not withheld, this inflammation can cause severe damage to the lining of the small bowel and even result in nutrient deficiency related health issues since the small bowel lining is organ where all the nutrition found in our food is absorbed.  The other is NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity or just "gluten sensitivity") which we know less about and are unsure of the exact mechanism of action. It is not an autoimmune disorder and unlike celiac disease it does not damage the lining of the small bowel, though, like celiac disease, it can cause GI distress and it can also do other kinds of damage to the body. It is thought to be more common than celiac disease. Currently, we cannot test for NCGS. Celiac disease must first be ruled out to arrive at a diagnosis of NCGS. Both disorders require elimination of gluten from the diet.  Either of these disorders can find their onset at any stage of life. We know that celiac disease has a genetic component but the genes are inactive until awakened by some stress event. About 40% of the general population has the genetic potential to develop celiac disease but only about 1% develop active celiac disease. The incidence of NCGS is thought to be considerably higher.
