Head Twitches

Mr. Peppa Newbie

Well, for the past month i have noticed that my head twitches. It moves uncontrollably in a forward motion. My head moves quickly forward and backwards, it is really embarassing, and im not sure y. I have smoked pot before and it use to happen when i smoked pot but i didnt realize it. Now even when i don't smoke now it still happens. i haven't smoked in about 2 weeks. I went to see a doctor for a check up and he said that i was completely fine. Recently, i have noticed that sometimes my muscles in my legs cramp up, and start to twitch - but thats once a day. My Head moves in a forward motion ALL THE TIME! Its like im a Bobble Head toy... Any Help?

I am on some 'Stress relieving pills' because my doctor said it might be because im stressed but its been about 2 weeks with no results.

Whats up with all the quotes... they dont really help me

If indeed the smoking is causing it, it can take a while before it is completely out your system, and the side effect goes away.

Medications could possibly be the culprit as well. The asthma inhaler albuterol would give me the same head twitch only it would jerk to the left side. It would also give me shaky hands, roaming muscle spasms, and nightmares.

After I stopped taking albuterol it took a couple of months for all the symptoms to subside.

Are you gluten free? If so how long? Do you have any neurological involvement? Things like balance issues, pins and needles sensations in hands and feet, depression and anxiety or migraines? One thing you should for sure do is get a sublingual B12 supplement, gluten-free of course. One with magnesium is going to be the best. Also take a good gluten-free daily multiple. Are you being seen by a neurologist? If your doctor has not given you a referral ask for one. Also make sure you check the gluten statis of any meds you are on, OTC and script.

I am not really sure if i am gluten free; although i tend to avoid things with gluten but i dont always notice if i do intake gluten-free food items. I never had any really neurological problems before. I have noticed that i have had signs of depression, anxiety, and some minor headaches. I cant stand perfectly still, i tend to sway a little but its not noticeable. - I think its cause my head moves forwards and backwards thats what causes my body to sway. The meds i take currently are gluten free, and i am not seeing a neurologist. Although, how would the B12 supplement help. - The supplements i currently take contain 113mg of Magnesium and 75mcg of B12. But i take a huge amount daily of vitamin b6 should i switch to something else?

---

I am pretty sure that smoking is the cause as be4 i started to smoke this never happened, although when i was smoking. It would only happen when i was 'High', when i woke up the next day, or later on in the day it would pass. When i found out i was twitching, i couldn't stop twitching even when i didn't smoke; so i stopped smoking completely AND it still continues.

I find your comment about swaying very telling. I did this for years before I was diagnosed and it stopped within a couple of months gluten free, as did the tapping foot (I can't do the fast tap even if I try now but was never completely still since I was a child). I think you should make real sure you are gluten free for a while, I would go six months since neuro problems can take longer to resolve. The reason why I suggested a sublingual B12 is because your body may not be able to absorb and utilize it when it goes into the stomach. The sublingual is absorbed by the mucous membranes in the mouth and goes right into the bloodstream there bypassing the gut. B12 is needed for proper nerve function. It helps the nerves fire and pick up the way they are supposed to. Misfires can cause the sort of thing you are experiencing and they can be progressive.

As to the idea that smoking pot did this, it is highly unlikey. I have done a lot of study over the years on the effects of drugs, I taught a drug, alcohol and sex education and prevention program and have also done a great deal of research. I have never heard of an effect like that from pot. However many of the rolling papers that are used to smoke it have gluten. Gluten is another molecule that is absorbed by mucous membranes, when you smoke a joint you are absorbing the gluten the minute it touches your lips. If however what you are talking about smoking is crack or meth, well that is another story. Those could very well do damage to the nervous system that would result in the type of effect you are having. I don't think you were referring to those substances though.

The best thing you can do is to do a strict trial of the diet and at first you need to avoid gluten containing alcohols and vinagers. You can challenge them later when you are well but many with neuro symptoms are sensitive to them and for complete resolution of your symptoms you may need to avoid them also.

It also sounds like you started smoking suddenly, was there a reason for this? Were you under a lot of stress? Had you been ill? Did something happen that caused you to look for relief from the world? Celiac may be triggered by a severe emotional or physical stress. You simply may have triggered the celiac at about the same time.

Mr. Peppa Newbie

Well, i found out that i have been gluten free. Except as you said the rolling paper contains gluten - Although i didnt really smoke using papers for a couple months, then i went to the bong for the last few months i smoked. I didnt really start smoking suddenly, i just started to smoke a lot more . You said you taught about drugs and have stated that the drug couldn't be the source. When i started to use the bong i still wouldn't have this head problem when i wasnt under the influence. When i started noticing the problem, and quit i havent been able to stop. So could the gluten still be the source? Or can the drug influence my body in another way to make me do it? And i dont do any other drugs. I have been gluten free for a long time, until started using the spliffs- didnt know they had gluten in them. - is there enough gluten in them to affect me this way? I am going to get sublingual b12 supplements, as soon as i can.

Thanks for your help. You have been answering many of my problems, and its quite embarrassing to go places and have everyone watch you like a vulture.

Cut out the carbs and sugar.

I get neurological problems like that. Hands/arms shaking and its a combination of things.

Its an incredibly long story but basically if I get myself really screwed up with gluten the sugar/carbs go right into my blood stream, kind of like leaky gut.

I had it happen last week to me. Sugar free(by choice for weight loss) and I went and accidently ate a ton of gluten...followed by a lot of simple carbs and sugar which I usually do not have.

Woke up shaking and couldn't stop it. Hands, arms, muscles in the neck...

You can either wait for your insides to heal and you'll start absorbing it properly and it'll go away or cut that stuff out, wait for it to heal and slowly add it back in.

It takes a while to go away, like 4-5 days for me but if you keep eating the carbs/sugar it takes longer.

Every body is different, as is every bag of combustable materials. It is hard to know for sure whether or not something has been added although it is not common to spike pot. If others you are smoking with are drinking beer or smoking cigs that can contaminate the bong or pipe, just like if your significant other is drinking a beer and you kiss.

Sometimes we just don't know what caused an excaberation, it can be hard to pinpoint. It is also possible that for you pot is neurotoxic to a greater extent than the regular population, I have never heard of an effect like that but it doesn't mean it can't occur. I would stay away from the herb and alcohol for a bit until you are yourself again.

Also you say you have been gluten-free for a long time, does this include your toiletries, shaving creams, soaps, shampoos, lotions etc? Are you consuming gluten free grain alcohols and vinegars? Many with neurotoxic effects from gluten are unable to tolerate those although a lot of places will call them gluten free.

As for the embarrasment, try standing in front of a class of 30 11 year old boys with a male teacher and discussing nocturnal emissions. The teacher was under the desk before I was halfway done.

Edit: I do want to add that if this continues you really should get a second opinion, preferably from a neurologist. The doctor that was blaming it on 'nerves' and medicated you with an psychotropic without looking for a physical cause did you a disservice.

Yeah, well, here's the fun question. Pot can get cut with all sorts of things. Do you truly know what's in yours? It's not like it comes with an FDA approved ingredient list :P

Mr. Peppa Newbie

so if it was spiked, and this is the after affect, does it take time to wear off?

I live in a area with a unusually high amount of pot smokers. I have seen teenagers, pregnant women, nursing women, adults and seniors smoking. I have heard, but never seen, of kids smoking here. I have never heard of anyone starting to bob or shake from pot. Some people do get amped up from it. It is more of an upper than a downer for some. No bobbing though.

It does take a month for pot to leave your system. Speaking form someone who use to smoke alot, but hasn't in years, it took longer than that for the total effect to be removed from my body. I can not smoke. I have an autoimmune reaction to pot, but I didn't use to when I was younger. I had a few events in my life cause a change in my body. Although it is unlikely the pot itself causes this, it could be. You may have developed a reaction to it that will stop when it eventually leaves your body.

I have never heard of pot being cut. What I have heard of is Mold and pesticides and fertilizers. Do you know where it came from? Pot can mold. When it does it discolors. You may not notice this if it was Brick. Is it from Mexico? They use heavy pesticides. Non organic growers will use chemical fertilizers and pesticides in the US too. You can't wash pot to cleanse them off.

I have heard of people smoking laced pot, but you would definately know. They had PCP trips for days afterwords. This was in the late 80s early 90s though.

I do hope this subsides for you. If not PLEASE see a neurologist. I wouldn't take your drs word for it. It could be totally unrelated to pot, but the High triggered it more. Now it has just showed itself on it's own.

You need to see your doctor and most likley a neurologist. This could be caused by a number of things including reactions to some meds. If you are on any prescription meds make sure you let you doctor know this is happening ASAP.

Your post demonstrates the profound frustration and isolation that so many in the Celiac community feel, and I want to thank you for channeling that experience into advocacy. The medical gaslighting you endured for decades is an unacceptable and, sadly, a common story, and the fact that you now have to "school" your own GI specialist speaks volumes about the critical lack of consistent and updated education. Your idea to make Celiac Disease a reportable condition to public health authorities is a compelling and strategic one. This single action would force the system to formally acknowledge the prevalence and seriousness of the disease, creating a concrete dataset that could drive better research funding, shape medical school curricula, and validate the patient experience in a way that individual stories alone often cannot. It is an uphill battle, but contacting representatives, as you have done with Adam Gray, is exactly how change begins. By framing it as a public health necessity—a matter of patient safety and protection from misdiagnosis and neglect—you are building a powerful case. Your voice and your perseverance, forged through thirty years of struggle, are exactly what this community needs to ensure that no one else has to fight so hard just to be believed and properly cared for.

I had no idea there is a "Louisville" in Colorado!😉 I thought it was a typo because I always think of the Kentucky city--but good luck!

Navigating medication safety with Celiac disease can be incredibly stressful, especially when dealing with asthma and severe allergies on top of it. While I don't have personal experience with the HealthA2Z brand of cetirizine, your caution is absolutely warranted. The inactive ingredients in pills, known as excipients, are often where gluten can be hidden, and since the FDA does not require gluten-free labeling for prescription or over-the-counter drugs, the manufacturer's word is essential. The fact that you cannot get a clear answer from Allegiant Health is a significant red flag; a company that is confident its product is gluten-free will typically have a customer service protocol to answer that exact question. In situations like this, the safest course of action is to consider this product "guilty until proven innocent" and avoid it. A better alternative would be to ask your pharmacist or doctor to help you identify a major national brand of cetirizine (like Zyrtec) whose manufacturer has a verified, publicly stated gluten-free policy for that specific medication. It's not worth the risk to your health when reliable, verifiable options are almost certainly available to you. You can search this site for USA prescriptions medications, but will need to know the manufacturer/maker if there is more than one, especially if you use a generic version of the medication: To see the ingredients you will need to click on the correct version of the medication and maker in the results, then scroll down to "Ingredients and Appearance" and click it, and then look at "Inactive Ingredients," as any gluten ingredients would likely appear there, rather than in the Active Ingredients area. https://dailymed.nlm.nih.gov/dailymed/

What you're describing is indeed familiar to many in the Celiac community, especially in the early stages of healing. When the intestinal villi are damaged from Celiac disease, they struggle to properly digest and absorb fats, a condition known as bile acid malabsorption. This can cause exactly the kind of cramping and spasms you're seeing, as undigested fats can irritate the sensitive gut lining. It is highly plausible that her reactions to dairy and eggs are linked to their higher fat content rather than the proteins, especially since she tolerates lean chicken breast. The great news is that for many, this does improve with time. As her gut continues to heal on a strict gluten-free diet, her ability to produce the necessary enzymes and bile to break down fats should gradually return, allowing her to slowly tolerate a wider variety of foods. It's a slow process of healing, but your careful approach of focusing on low-fat, nutrient-dense foods like seeds and avocado is providing her system the best possible environment to recover. Many people with celiac disease, especially those who are in the 0-2 year range of their recovery, have additional food intolerance issues which could be temporary. To figure this out you may need to keep a food diary and do an elimination diet over a few months. Some common food intolerance issues are dairy/casein, eggs, corn, oats, and soy. The good news is that after your gut heals (for most people who are 100% gluten-free this will take several months to two years) you may be able to slowly add some these items back into your diet after the damaged villi heal. This article may be helpful: Thank you for sharing your story—it's a valuable insight for other parents navigating similar challenges.

I had a very rough month after diagnosis. No exaggeration, lost so much inflammatory weight, I looked like a bag of bones, underneath i had been literally starving to death. I did start feeling noticeably better after a month of very strict control of my kitchen and home. What are you eating for breakfast and lunch? I ignored my doc and ate oats, yes they were gluten free, but some brands are at the higher end of gluten free. Lots of celics can eat Bob's Red Mill gluten-free oats, but not me. I can now eat them, but they have to be grown and processed according to the "purity protocol" methods. I mail order them, Montana Gluten-Free brand. A food and symptoms and activities log can be helpful in tracking down issues. You might be totally aware, but I have to mention about the risk of airborne gluten. As the doc that diagnosed me warned . . Remember eyes, ears, nose, and mouth all lead to your stomach and intestines.  Are you getting any cross contamination? Airborne gluten? Any pets eating gluten (they eat it, lick themselves, you pet them...)? Any house remodeling? We live in an older home, always fixing something. I've gotten glutened from the dust from cutting into plaster walls, possibly also plywood (glues). The suggestions by many here on vitamin supplements also really helped me. I had some lingering allergies and asthma, which are now 99% gone. I was taking Albuterol inhaler every hour just to breathe, but thiamine in form of benfotiamine kicked that down to 1-2 times a day within a few days of starting it. Also, since cutting out inflammatory seed oils (canola, sunflower, grapeseed, etc) and cooking with real olive oil, avocado oil, ghee, and coconut oil, I have noticed even greater improvement overall and haven't used the inhaler in months! It takes time to weed out everything in your life that contains gluten, and it takes awhile to heal and rebuild your health. At first it's mentally exhausting, overwhelming, even obsessive, but it gets better and second nature.
