I need help. What brand name mascaras are gluten free? I look like quite the dork reading labels in the store and comparing them to my many pages of ingredients containing gluten. Also, does anyone know if Herbal Essences "Body Envy" shampoo is gluten free-the ingredients "seem" ok but I would like a 2nd opinion--thanks!

Others may disagree with me, but I wouldn't worry about the mascara. I'm pretty positive I've never ingested mascara.

I use my fingers to brush out any clumps I get which means I often get mascara on my fingers. I always wash my hands afterwards, but you never know. I use gluten-free mascara just to be safe. I use Rimmel brand. Pretty sure Cover Girl is also gluten-free. Not sure on the shampoo.

Interesting... this is a topic I would never have considered. I stopped wearing ALL makeup over 10 years ago, I simply could not take the itching and burning I always experience whenever I try. (And I always bought the more expensive hypoallergenic stuff.) Even Mary Kay which is supposed to be so good for you gave me eczema all over my face. No thanks, that's even less attractive than me without makeup!

Now I am wondering if, once I get this poison out of my system, it is possible that I will stop having so many allergy symptoms to so many random things? No makeup, have to switch shampoo and deodorant brands every few months, not to mention the foods I can't eat without the bloating.

Wow, I'm going to have to keep an eye on this.

Hi

There was a post here in the forum that said "herbal essences" is NOT gluten free . I don't remember where this post was...

I know the Unilever products will disclose their gluten ingredients. I switched to Suave shampoo. Dove is also good about labeling.

I haven't worried about my mascara, but checked all lip balms, lip glosses, face cream, hand cream etc.

I use Estee Lauder MagnaScopic which I confirmed was gluten-free with the company. I do worry about mascara because the eyes are lined with mucous membranes and gluten is absorbed by the mucous membranes anywhere they are on the body. The nose, the eyes, the mouth, in women the 'personal' areas, these are all areas where gluten can be absorbed into the system and go directly to the bloodstream and thus the brain. This may or may not cause GI symptoms in folks but it will keep the autoimmune process active in us.

I use Lorelle waterproof mascara. It has been fine for the past several years. I purchase a shampoo and conditioner from my hair salon that states on the labeling that it is Gluten Free. YEA!!!

RE: Cover Girl mascara, I too read it was all suppose to be gluten-free but after reading the ingredients on many packages, I could not find one that was gluten-free. My avon rep has several gluten-free mascaras (she happened tp stop by my office while I was having my mascara crisis) so I have ordered them and will see how they work. If you google gluten-free Avon, a list of gluten-free products should come up. Thanks for all your replies ladies. L.A.

CLARIFICATION: I'm actually not sure on Cover Girl mascara. I thought that was the brand I've used, but it turns out I've used Maybelline instead.

I use FlowerColor Natural Mascara from Ecco Bella.

You can find it at most health food stores where they carry natural cosmetics or online:

From the website FAQ's:

"There is no gluten or wheat protein in any FlowerColor cosmetic product."

You called it @knitty kitty.  I went to another health care provider for another opinion, and based on some tests they did, they suggested I might also be dealing with a fungal issue (candida and/or mold).  I saw that you mentioned before in this chain that some people on this forum also get Candida infections.  So it seems that I am possibly dealing that issue in my gut as well. I think some of the symptoms that I've been not able to understand now make a lot of sense within this context (such as why eating dairy and sugar sometimes causes me to get headaches, joint pain, chills, feel like I have the flu... if these things are making the candida infection worse by feeding the candida, and then my body responds by trying to fight it off, then I basically am fighting off an infection, which is exactly what it feels like).  The flu-like reaction that I get when I eat dairy is a distinct reaction than the one I get from getting glutened (which is also bad, but different: headache, sharp abdominal pains, gas, diarrhea). That's what made me think there was something else at play.

I'm concerned about calcium.  I don't think I'm getting enough especially since I ended up having to get off dairy when I went gluten free.  However, if you have too much calcium, it can deposit in the wrong places and you can get thinks like bone spurs.  I'd like find a decent supplement for that.  Was thinking of looking into the algae based calcium supplements since they're more natural than some of the others available, but seem rather expensive.  When possible, I try supplement with food sources.  One or two Brazil nuts usually have the full RDA for selenium.  One Barbados cherry has the daily RDA for vitamin C.  I also use seaweed to help supplement iodine since I don't use iodized salt.

Wanted to tell someone, I finally made an edible gluten free bread.  It took me several hours to make and it didn't taste like what I was trying to make, but it did taste like a bread.  Was looking all over for bread machine recipes and I ran across this one on the Internet:  https://www.snapcalorie.com/recipes/gluten_free_oat_challah_bread_machine.html  Used it as a starting point, but I swapped out the tapioca with arrowroot and the xanthan gum with guar gum and glucomannan.  I also made it using the gluten-free pizza mode on my Panasonic bread machine and then took the batter out and put it in a bread mold to give it some shape.  I let it rise another 20 minutes and baked it at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 20 minutes in the oven.

The concept of "over-methylation" as a common clinical condition is not supported by mainstream medicine. While methylation is a crucial biochemical process, the idea that people frequently become "over-methylated" and that this is linked to B6 deficiency is a speculative theory, not an established fact.
