Not Sure I'm Being Cautious Enough

Hi everyone

I am still wondering about CC. I'm the only gluten-free person in the house and while everyone is being very careful I'm still wondering if I could be missing something. If someone eats gluten micro. popcorn and then touches something before washing their hands, could I get glutened by touching the same thing?

I keep all my stuff separate, and wash everything separately, but could I put my stuff in the dishwasher with theirs? How about glasses? I never used teflon pans, only steel, and I've given them many good scrubs and still using them. Is that safe? I've only been cooking gluten free meals. Except for the occasional slice of cheese which I'm not sure is gluten free. I'm being as careful as I can but I don't feel well and all the extra work is getting to me. It's hard enough figuring out what I'm going to eat that will put on some weight. If I eat too much fats I get nauseous. I'm just wondering if it can leave some kind of film on things that I could pick up.

Thanks

Definitely yes!

As far as the separate dishes/dishwasher - hubby is not gluten-free, and I don't seem to have a problem with that. In my opinion, scrubbing and washing well is good enough. I do change the sponges and dish towels very frequently though, and mostly use paper towels when drying my hands.

However, I have had to start separating the cheese. I'll buy a block, and put a chunk in a ziploc, and use that JUST for his glutenous sandwiches/quesadillas. I keep the other chunk separate so I can use it for meals, and it's not got bread crumbs all over it. Got sick from that a few times.

How long have you been gluten free for?

I have been gluten-free for about 3 months and I'm really only starting to feel better and still have some off days.

Make sure you use separate condiments and wash your hands if you think that you have touched something that has been glutened.

I also think that washing is enough with your pans and plates etc.

I live with my fiance who is not gluten-free, I make his gluteny sandwiches and never really have a problem. I just make sure that I wash down any surfaces before I use them. I would suggest looking at any other things that come into contact with your mouth, I changed my lipstick, checked my toothpaste etc and changed the soap that I use on my face. I don't think its necessary to change all your toiletries but as I said, anything that comes anywhere near your mouth should be looked at.

Also you could explore the possibility that you have other food intolerances.

Thanks Scott. They are gluten-free but cross contaminated.

Hi there @MCAyr I have a small umbilical hernia which came about during my second pregnancy.   I can just about see it, and feel it, when I stand or sit, but it is far less noticeable when I lie down.  I always know when I am putting on weight because I can get pain and burning near the site, funnily enough not on the hernia itself but either side!  I would imagine bloating could cause the same effect as weight gain. In my case I don't think it is my bowel protruding but a bit of fat  - sorry,  I realise this isn't painting a very pretty picture.  But in truth it is scarcely noticeable.  It has never really got bigger in size. I was rather hoping that it could be operated on but here in the UK they don't seem to operate on every hernia anymore.  My GP isn't remotely worried about it. In a way, I should be thankful - it is like an early warning system that I need to go on a diet! Cristiana

The hernia description would likely be unrelated to celiac disease, but you'd need to get it checked out by your doctor to be sure it's a hernia.
