Warning About Puritans Pride

I had always used this brand in the past because they are very affordable.

I have a whole new set of vitamins now that are gluten free

but stupid me, yesterday was like "Maybe Ill try and use these old ones up"

I looked at the ingrediants and didn't see anything to worry about

and took three pills.

Within 4 hours I could tell I'd been glutened!

These vitamins are bad news. I wonder if because they are so cheap they have filler

ingrediants. It sucks because I have bottles of them. :(

Just a warning, although Im sure you guys don't need it as you are probably

more careful than silly me.

I went to their website and found nothing. I got the feeling they were more interested in selling me something than informing me about what they wanted me to buy. That being said, a google search turned up a post on another forum that said their online help (that I didn't see but could have missed) would look up anything for you, so you might try that before you throw out what you have.

We have a Puritan Pride Outlet Center just a few miles away and there are very few vitamins that I found that state gluten free, and even those contain barley grasses. I do not trust barely grasses, I don't care how many people will tell us they are safe, I will not trust them. One vitamin they listed as gluten free, stated a gluten in the ingredients, I called the company on it, they told me, "It does not contain enough gluten for us to justify calling it gluten!" I told them it wasn't up to them to tell me how much is too much! I will not purchase their vitamins, even though at the outlet stores the vitamins sell--buy one, get 2 free. The risk is just too high!

I knew they were bad news.

I really worry that they have things that aren't on the ingrediants list.

I should have known better. Oh well, lesson learned!

I'm sure I'll be doing better by tomorrow.

I'm giving everything I have from their company away.

the label. I phoned them and never got a satisfactory answer from them and had to

stop purchasing their products. We then switched to Freeda vitamins (mail order

pricey but reliably gluten free).

Wow. How sad. Ive never heard of a company going from gluten free options to NONE. :angry:

I really don't want to do business with them anymore. I may continue to pick up a few things there

(other than their name brand, they do have some gluten free fiber supplements I like by the Yerba Prima

brand)

Not relating to celiac but another thing I noticed about them I really don't like is how stupid they seem

to think their customers are.

For example, they are having a big, buy one, get one free and buy two get three free sale right now.

Advertising it all over the place, so Im like wow good deal and go look. Its SUCH a rip off.

The coconut oil I normally bought from them costs five something.

To get TWO in their buy one get one free sale it costs ELEVEN something bucks!

How the #^&@# is it buy one get one free when they DOUBLE the price of the ONE?

Its really an insult to my intelligence.

Im going to do all my shopping at vitacost.com from now on. Much better site and they have actually

answered any gluten inquiries Ive had timely and kindly with concern.

      I cannot tolerate it at all - triggers burning and nausea, ditto aspirin.  Here in the UK I take Paracetamol.

      For back pain, I take a combination of Cobalamine B12, Pyridoxine B 6, and Thiamine B 1 (in the form Benfotiamine), which have an analgesic effect.  These three B vitamins together work way better than those over the counter pain relievers.  Theses are water soluble B vitamins that are easily excreted via the kidneys if not needed.  Thiamine will also help the nausea.       @stephaniekl, welcome to the forum, Is your daughter taking any nutritional supplements?   Weight loss and failure to thrive are two symptoms of thiamine insufficiency.  Thiamine deficiency symptoms are not recognized as such by doctors.   I experienced similar symptoms when I became malnourished.  Thiamine deficiency symptoms can become worse quickly, and can affect one emotionally and mentally.  Although blood tests for thiamine aren't accurate, do have your daughter checked for nutritional deficiencies.  Thiamine B 1 works with the other B vitamins and magnesium.  Thiamine and Niacin B 3 help improve Gerd.  All the B vitamins are frequently low due to malabsorption.  Vitamin D will help calm the immune system.  Thiamine helps the immune system fight off viruses like those tick borne illnesses.   Thiamine Mononitrate, which is in many vitamin supplements, is not bioavailable.  I was taking a multivitamin containing thiamine mononitrate and still became deficient in thiamine. Thiamine in the form Benfotiamine has been shown to promote intestinal healing.  A form called TTFD (tetrahydrofurfuryl disulfide) is also excellent for correcting thiamine deficiency.  A combination of Thiamine, Cobalamine B12, and Pyridoxine B 6 has analgesic properties.  I take it for back pain.   Keep us posted on your progress!       Has prednisone or some other systemic steroid been tried that might quiet her immune system down for a while? I have two acquaintances with Lyme's disease. It is a wicked condition that has long fingers.

      We have.  She is so limited as to what she can eat.  She has a nutritionist, but they are even at a loss.  Right now, her pain is so significant that she can only eat 5-10 bites a meal.   We just got some labs back today and she is hypoglycemia, anemic and her immune system is shot.  She also is positive for 3 tickborne illnesses.  Thanks for your help!
