Hi, my 15 year old daughter was just diagnosed with celiac. She has had no symptoms that are most commonly talked about...but an endoscopy confirmed it. So now we are beginning the world of gluten free...I am reading as much as I can and I am learning alot...some of her bigger questions are as follows:

1. Any fast food french fries that are ok?

2. Any pizza ok?

Those are the two biggest. She is doing ok, but having a hard time reconciling this to being a teenager. She is worried about being seen as a "freak" when she goes to parties etc...any help is greatly appreciated!

In N Out french fries are gluten free and really good. I would go to the fast food websites that are around you and look at the allergen/nutrition list to see what does not have gluten in it. You want to make sure the fast food place only uses the deep fryer for the french fries (dedicated fryer) not fries and onion rings type of thing.

Ore-Ida has a website with gluten free fries (oven fries).

Pizza there are online stores that sell crusts. If you have Henry's, Whole Foods etc type of stores around you..you can find pizza crust mixes and frozen crusts. These are all trial and error things, you will eventually find a brand you like or a recipe you like.

Here is a link that shows companies that will list gluten if present:

You can go to company websites -- alot are now having a gluten free section or in their frequently asked section talk about gluten free items. Hormel has a lot on there site, as an example.

Keep in mind that some people react to milk and sometimes soy in the beginning of their gluten free diet b/c you body is healing. She might need to remove milk products for a little while and re-introduce slowly in a little while. You can also keep a food journal so she knows what she is eating and if she reacts to something you can try to pin point it easier. She may have mood/behavior swings in the very beginning where she is normal acting and then quiet. Everyone reacts differently when going off of gluten.

Welcome to the site :)

Absolutely my point with Kerrigan, the owner. She stood to secure many years of faithful patronage by simply inviting us in for a pastry or lunch. Or by simply producing another $50 e-card based on trust. We would have been highly satisfied. We are limited to a few restaurants in the area, and that would have been one. It was very disappointing, esp to my wife, to realize we can't patronize the place anymore.

You would think any business would see the wisdom of honoring a $50 gift certificate on the basis of customer satisfaction alone, apart from any questions about software glitches.

So there was no physical, plastic card involved, correct?

When my wife attempted to open the online card in the store with a cashier, it would not work. We then showed the owner the link to the card, the online receipt that I got upon purchase, and even my bank statement confirming the purchase. That did not satisfy her, since she said she needed the link to open to reveal the gift ID num. They even admitted they had a systems problem around that time.
