Iga Deficiency And Conflicting Articles

I have been trying to read up on IgA Deficiency and Celiac. My daughter had a blood test and is IgA Deficient and her AGA IgG came back high. Some articles say to perform a biopsy if this happens, and some articles say that this is not a good determinate of Celiac. I have been reviewing tons of journal articles and I just don't know what to believe. I have a call in to the gastro doc to see if they would like further blood testing like TtG IgG, EMA IgG also. Anyone else IgA deficient want to share their blood work?

I decided to get myself tested as well and came back IgA deficient. The doc wouldn't initially order IgG's for all the celiac tests because she didn't think I would be IgA deficient, I was very frustrated, going back to ask her to order them now that we know I am too!

Trying to decide whether I believe she may have celiac based on that AGA IgG????

Several years ago I had a ton of blood work done to figure out why I was not absorbing calcium. One of the things the hematologist told me was that I was "IgA deficient". I had no idea what it meant and he said if I ever needed a blood transfusion, I would have to be sure it was IgA deficient also. One year ago, my endo decided to test me for celiac because of the malabsorption problems I was still having. He ordered the testing and I came home and did research. One of the things that popped in many articles was IgA deficiency causing a negative test result. I called and spoke with the nurse and they ordered the IgG version of the TTG test first. It came back positive. Then they did the EMA and had to do the full panel (IgA and IgG) to get the correct result. I also checked with the lab first and they agreed. The EMA came back negative for IgA and positive for IgG. If I had not remembered what that other doctor told me, I would have had negative results and probably not questioned it. The note was in my records provided to the dr and they never noticed it until I mentioned it.

I would pursue the IgG testing just to be sure.

      hi, i want to say thank you to you and @trents . after 2 phone calls to my GI, her office called me back to tell me that a blood test was “unnecessary” and that we should “follow the gold standard” and since my biopsy did not indicate celiac, to follow the no dairy and sucraid diet. i luckily have expendable income and made an appt for the labcorp blood t...

      Okay that is really good to know. So with that being positive and the other being high it makes sense she diagnosed her even without the endoscopy. So glad we caught it early. She had so many symptoms though that to me it was clear something was wrong. yeah I think we had better test us and the other kids as well.

      @GlorietaKaro, your respiratory reactions to gluten make me wonder if there might also be an allergic (anaphylaxis) component at work here.

      hi, i want to say thank you to you and @trents   . after 2 phone calls to my GI, her office called me back to tell me that a blood test was “unnecessary” and that we should “follow the gold standard” and since my biopsy did not indicate celiac, to follow the no dairy and sucraid diet. i luckily have expendable income and made an appt for the labcorp blood test that day. i just got my results back and it indicates celiac disease i think 😭   im honestly happy bc now i KNOW and i can go gluten free. and i am SO MAD at this doctor for dismissing me for a simple blood test that wouldn’t have cost her anything !!!!!!!!!!! im sorry, im so emotional right now, i have been sick my whole life and never knew why, i feel so much better already   my results from labcorp:   Celiac Ab tTG TIgA w/Rflx Test Current Result and Flag Previous Result and Date Units Reference Interval t-Transglutaminase (tTG) IgA 01 28 High U/mL 0-3 Negative 0 - 3 Weak Positive 4 - 10 Positive >10 Tissue Transglutaminase (tTG) has been identified as the endomysial antigen. Studies have demonstrated that endomysial IgA antibodies have over 99% specificity for gluten sensitive enteropathy. Immunoglobulin A, Qn, Serum 01 245 mg/dL 87-352

      Okay that is really good to know. So with that being positive and the other being high it makes sense she diagnosed her even without the endoscopy. So glad we caught it early.
