Celiac-related Diaper Rash? Treatments?

OC mom

OC mom Newbie

Our 2-1/2 DD has had bad diarrhea and pimply, red bump, extremely painful (can't sit) diaper rash for 10 days. Her twin brother was diagnosed with celiac 1 yr ago and has had significant growth and temperament improvement on a gluten-free diet since then. She had blood test 1 yr ago when brother was diagnosed, but had negative results (common I understand under age 5...her brother's blood work was also negative - only the biopsy confirmed his diagnosis.) We had her blood tested again this week and are awaiting the results. She was in 5th percentile for weight (now has lost some due to diarrhea). Her brother tested positive for one of the celiac genes, but she has not been genetically tested. My questions are: 1) Have others seen this type of rash in toddlers with celiac, 2) if so, how long on the gluten-free diet before improvements were seen and 3) what treatment has worked (we've tried oxistat, A&D, Boudreaux's Butt Paste, vaseline, steroids, Desitin) and nothing works, she's in a lot of pain. Obviously, potty training would help, but we started a little while ago and it was derailed when this started..... We were avoiding the biopsy with her until absolutely necessary, but it may be time, depending on blood work results. Thanks much.

Try some coconut oil.

hard to know if the rash is directly cuased by the gluten or by the diarhea. My dd had pimply rashes, we treated it with Bacitracin ointment. I love that stuff. We also used a solution of 1 T of baking soda disolved in 1 C of boiling water. I kept it with the diaper things and dipped my wipe in it before wiping a few times a day. It's an anitfungal treatment, but the pimples and sunburn sort of rash cn be caused by yeast. WE did both the wipe solution and the bacityracin ointment for a few day. it worked on her rashes most of the time. They did go away once we were completely off gluten and dairy.

make sure it is truely diaper rash. my son had the same thing. most times it was diaper rash. When it was, I used desitin original - the creamy stung him real bad. I also rinsed his bottom with water and used a very soft cloth to dry. I let him run around naked when I could to help it heal. It would go away in a couple of days. Other times when desitin did not work, I would first put on fungal cream (like for jock itch) and then desitin. i would use the fungal cream about 4 times a day (my son would have about 9 diarrheas a day) Your daughter may very well have yeast infection and this should help until you can get to the dr. My son is 2 1/2 also and when he gets gluten or sugar the first thing that appears is a red ring around his anus. good luck

Have you taken her to the dr to have it looked at? Just to make sure it's not a yeast infection? My dd had a yeast infection once and it sounds like what you described. My son had HORRIBLE diaper rashes though from birth and more than once, they would bleed-but they looked more like acid burns, no pimples. He was always in the 10th percent for his height and weight until he was diagnosed. Since going gluten-free, there have been no more rashes except for the red ring around the anus when he gets glutened. Hope she feels better soon!!

My two-year-old gets it as well. The only thing I have found that helps is a mixture of A&D, Mylanta (to neutralize the acid), and baby powder (just to thicken it to an easy-spread consistency). My son has problems with gluten, milk, soy, egg, and yeast. His rashes get so bad he can't sit down. You might need to rinse your child with water after a diaper change and pat it or let it air dry so all the acid gets washed off.

Segments of the protein Casein are the same as segments of the protein strands of gluten, the 33-mer segment.   The cow's body builds that Casein protein.  It doesn't come from wheat.   Casein can trigger the same reaction as being exposed to gluten in some people.   This is not a dairy allergy (IGE mediated response).  It is not lactose intolerance.

Wheatwacked, what exactly did you intend when you stated that wheat is incorporated into the milk of cows fed wheat? Obviously, the gluten would be broken down by digestion and is too large a molecule anyway to cross the intestinal membrane and get into the bloodstream of the cow. What is it from the wheat that you are saying becomes incorporated into the milk protein?

Wheat in cow feed would not equal gluten in the milk, @Wheatwacked, please back up extraordinary claims like this with some scientific backing, as I've never heard that cow's milk could contain gluten due to what the cow eats.

Hello, @NanceK, I'm glad you're willing to give Benfotiamine with B Complex another go!  I'm certain you'll feel much better.   Yes, supplementation is a good idea even if you're healing and gluten free.  The gluten free diet can be low in B vitamins and other nutrients. A nutritionist can help guide you to a nutrient dense diet, but food sensitivities and food preferences can limit choices.  I can't consume fish and shellfish due to the sulfa hypersensitivity and iodine content, and dairy is out as well.  I react to casein, the protein in dairy, as well as the iodine in dairy.  My Dermatitis Herpetiformis is aggravated by iodine.   Blood tests for B vitamin levels are notoriously inaccurate.  You can have deficiency symptoms before blood levels change to show a deficiency.  I had subclinical vitamin deficiencies for years which affected my health, leading to a slow downward spiral.  Because the B vitamins are water soluble, they are easily excreted in urine if not needed.  It's better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.   Wheat and other gluten containing grain products have vitamins and minerals added to them to replace those nutrients lost in processing.  Manufacturers add cheap vitamins that our bodies don't absorb or utilize well.  Even normal people can suffer from vitamin deficiencies.  The rise in obesity can be caused by High Calorie Malnutrition, where people eat more carbohydrate calories but don't get sufficient thiamine and B vitamins to turn the calories into energy.  The calories are stored as fat in an effort to ration out diminishing thiamine  stores.    It's time to buy your own vitamins in forms like Benfotiamine that our bodies can use well.   Not sleeping well and fatigue are symptoms of Thiamine deficiency.   I'm certain Benfotiamine with a B Complex will help you immensely.  Just don't take them at night since B vitamins provide lots of energy, you can become too energetic to sleep.  Better to take them earlier in your day.   Do keep me posted on your progress!

Oh wow! Thanks for this information! I’m going to try the Benfotiamine again and will also add a B-complex to my supplements. Presently, I just take sublingual B12 (methylcobalomin). Is supplementation for celiacs always necessary even though you remain gluten-free and you’re healing as shown on endoscopy? I also take D3, mag glycinate, and try to get calcium through diet. I am trying to bump up my energy level because I don’t sleep very well and feel fatigued quite often. I’m now hopeful that adding the Benfotiamine and B-complex will help. I really appreciate your explanation and advice! Thanks again Knitty Kitty!
