Gastro- Or Colonoscopy?

Hi,

I'm very new to this! I had a blood test done that showed positive IgG for gluten, lactose and egg. Together with a high serotonine level and low iron, the doctor concluded I have 'leaky gut syndrome'. I'm not sure. I'm thinking of asking another doctor for a second opinion, based on the bloodwork. The thing is: if he suggests to do a gastroscopy to see if I'm a celiac (which I consider to be a possibility) I can't go through with that because of my emetophobia :( . If a colonoscopy can diagnose celiac, I'd be very happy, but so far no celiac-site I read has mentioned colonoscopy... on the contrary: on this site I find this in an article: "A colonoscopy is frequently preformed for the investigation of diarrhea but does not and can not detect celiac disease. Joseph A. Murray, MD." Still members here are getting a colonoscopy done...

Second, is IgG enough or should I get more specific bloodtests to test for celiac (or should I also consider other possible diagnoses??)

And when I want to get those tests done I need to be glutened so, after being on the diet for a month already...I don't know if it's a good idea to all of a sudden switch back again??

Thanks for helping!!

Welcome!

This is the blood panel that is specific for Celiac Disease:

Anti-gliadin antibodies (AGA) both IgA and IgG

Anti-endomysial antibodies (EMA) - IgA

Anti-tissue transglutaminase antibodies (tTG) - IgA

Total IgA level.

For optimum accuracy, a continued gluten diet is recommended. Some doctors may consider a positive dietary reponse the diet to be diagnostic as well.

Members here may be getting colonoscopys in conjunction with endoscopy exams due to years of digestive issues and it's wise to check out both ends (so to speak). Although, an endoscopy/biopsy can detect Celiac Disease found in the small intestines. Colonoscopy is specific for the large intestines.

The Lindt (Lindor) dairy-free oat milk truffles are definitely gluten-free, and (last time I checked) so are the white chocolate truffles and the mint chocolate truffles.

I've used magnesium taurinate and magnesium taurate vitamins.  Didn't notice much of a difference when I used them.

More great tips, and a good excuse to shop at M&S and also buy more iced buns!   I wish we had an ASDA near us, as the few times we've been to one their gluten-free pasta range seemed very reasonably priced compared to other shops.  Thanks so much, @Russ H.
