gluten-free Restaurant In Boise, Idaho Area?

Please help me. My daughter is 4 years old and diagnosed Tuesday with Celiac. We were basically given the diagnosis by the GI Dr. after biopsies came back positive. I feel like we have been thrown out into the ocean and expected to survive. I have spent countless hours going throuth my pantry and trying to figure out what is gluten-free. I have bought a couple of books that have given me great information, but I still have so much to learn! I am wondering if anyone knows of any local restaurants that have gluten-free meals? I would appreciate ANY help?

Sorry I can't find it right now. I am on my way to church. There is a thread from this year on here. I will try to find it for you later. Pizzalchik has gluten-free pizza if you call ahead of time. I haven't tried it. It's on the opposite corner of Walmart, Albertsons and KFC on State street and Glenwood. The Boise co-op sells gluten-free items and the gluten-free store on Fairview is all gluten-free... its called Jake's Place. Its near the big old farmer's barn across from Walmart heading to Boise. I think they are closed Sun and Mon but the co-op is open 7 days and a bit cheaper too. I don't live in Boise...an hour away :(

There are 2 Outback Steak Houses in the Boise area; one is in Boise and the other in Nampa. Outback is one of the big-chain restaurants that have gluten-free menus. There is also a PF Chang's in Boise; they too have a gluten free menu.

Even when you eat at a restaurant with a gluten-free menu, you should be cautious, speak to the manager so that they know how important it is to avoid cross-contamination.

I've had fairly good luck eating at restaurants WITHOUT gluten free menus; I simply find something on the menu that looks as though it might be gluten free, then I find out if they marinate the meat or add seasonings. If the waiter/waitress is friendly and intelligent he or she will investigate what's in the marinade or seasonings; if not, I ask them for the dish without marinade/seasonings and explain that it must be cooked in a clean, uncontaminated pan. I also avoid sauces that may cause problems. Calling ahead and talking to the manager is always a good idea.

Two of my daughters live in Kuna; both of them are on the gluten free diet. Robin has her entire family eat gluten-free. She has a 5-year-old daughter, Carly, with celiac disease. I'm sure that she would be happy to help you if you have questions; she's at church now but I will call her later and ask her if I can put you in direct contact with her.

I know how stressed out you must be right now, but it does get easier with time. The great thing is that there are lots of meals you can make that are already naturally gluten free: enchiladas made with corn tortillas (just make sure the sauce is gluten free if you purchase canned sauce - Las Palmas is); tacos in corn tortillas; stir-fried meat and veggies served over rice (use Tamari sauce or a gluten-free soy sauce since most soy sauces have gluten); Indian curries....just a plain dinner of steak, potatoes, and salad can be gluten free! The only danger is from condiments, toppings and salad dressing...and you can always find gluten free alternatives out there.

When you need to know if a particular food is gluten free (like a salad dressing or whatever) just type the brand name and the words "gluten free" into Google or into the search box in this forum.

I am Robin. My mom, JoAnn, posted a response to you earlier today. I just wanted to let you know that I felt the same way you do just one year ago. Changing to a gluten-free diet can be expensive and takes some trial and error. Over time we have found good gluten-free bread, pizza, pasta and snacks at Fred Meyer. (Jake's and the Co-op can be even more expensive) The Fred Meyer on Overland and Five Mile has the most variety. The cheapest way to go gluten-free is to figure out what you eat that is already gluten-free: unseasoned meat, fresh fruits and vegetables, eggs, corn, rice, and potatos are all naturally gluten-free.

Here are some things my daughter eats:

*corn tortillas for quesadillas and tacos

*Rice Chex (other gluten-free cereals cost 2 to 3 times more)

*Yoplait yogurt is gluten-free (some yogurts aren't)

There is a whole section of gluten-free products at Fred-Meyer. This is what we buy:

*ENER-G Seattle Brown Bread

*Amy's Cheese Pizza with Rice Crust (found in the frozen section, we just add the toppings)

*Brown-Rice Pasta

*Nature's Path Organic Buckwheat Wildberry Waffles (frozen)

**You can find Enviro Kids Organic Gorilla Munch cereal (similar to Kix) at Winco for $2 instead of at Fred Meyer's for $4!

Some things to watch out for:

*Most pre-grated cheese has wheat flour on it to keep it from clumping (we just by it in blocks)

*IHOP adds pancake batter to their scrambled eggs!! We were lucky we asked that day. :}

*When looking at ingredients, you want to watch for wheat, rye, barley, oats, malt, dextrin, and modified food starch. There are many more things to watch out for.... however, I have never seen them come up. Also, even though you want to steer clear of any malt or dextrin, maltodextrin is gluten-free. It is something totally different.

Hi, I haven't gotten to check out any Aisian markets for flours yet. Have you? Which store is best and what do you get there regularly? Any Indian markets in the valley? Thanks!!

The only places I have looked for gluten free flours are Fred-Meyer and Winco. Sorry, I am not of much help. :huh:

Thanks anyway...I have a hard time finding the time to stop at an Asian market (so many errands when we make it to Boise) and there are several to try. The co-op I find is cheaper then Fred's for flours unless you have to make a special trip. I wish we had a Whole Foods. Your mom posted a restaurant thread so I made a copy for my dd. Thanks to her. Also Louie's Pizza and Pasta has a gluten-free menu. AND there is a bakery, Darcy's, in Nampa and they make wedding cakes and cinnamon rolls. What a surprise.

My dd works near the Fred's on Overland, thanks for mentioning their selection. She will check it out one of these days. ;)

I was going to respond to this thread and was surprised to see so many folks from the Boise area. I have only been doing gluten-free for about 3 months and it does start to get easier. My 2 year old dd was diagnosed in Oct. It has truely made a world of difference for her. Once your kid starts feeling better it will all seem worth it! We have other food issues and can't use many of the commercially available products. My kids like the Chebe pizza crust though you can find it at Jakes.

I want to say thanks to everyone for all the great info, A BAKERY in nampa wow I'll have to check that out.

I am also on a local support group for kids with food issues. I think I might be the only one on there dealing with celiac but I would be happy to share the group's info with you.

Oh and I forgot to mention Pier 49 pizza says they have a gluten free crust. We are also avoiding Rice so I havn't tried it but thought I would mention it.

Thanks for the pizza tip and the Chebe tip too, I haven't got to try it yet. My dd's are not Celiacs but are allergic to wheat. I used the above link for restaurants and googled Nampa which Darcy's bakery came up. My 20 yr old just got a great bf so I was glad to know Darcy's does gluten-free wedding cakes....you never know when you might need one and they are pretty hard to find ;)

Sure no problem!

My husband will even eat the pizza crust so it must be ok. I do roll it out super thin. The kids didn't like the foccasia bread though. It is pretty amazing that you found a local bakery that will do gluten free I am definitely going to have to check it out. My son has Ige allergies to nuts so we haven't eaten anything from a bakery in 3 years but if they can do gluten free safely maybe they would have options that would be safe for him as well.

Wow, how did I miss this thread! This is so great. My husband and I had heard of a bakery in "caldwell" that was gluten free but I had NO luck finding it online. We live in Emmett and although I've been gluten-free for awhile now, my whole family is giving it a shot. Louie's on Chinden near Jake's Place has a gluten-free menu for pizza and pasta. We've never been glutened there. My mom was there not too long ago and they brought out a new dessert for her to try, on the house since they were experimenting with something new. It was great to know that they are expanding their options on their already large menu! It is good food too. They are very knowledgeable I think.

Other than that we usually stick to Fred Meyer and Walmart (their products say gluten free on the store brands). We go to Jakes Place when we can but their hours aren't very accomodating to us unfortunately. I've heard the Albertsons in Eagle has a great selection and carries Tinkyada noodles, the best in my humble opinion.

What do you guys think of starting an email group so we can write to everyone in the Boise area to let everyone know of our new finds? I love this site but sometimes I miss things- like this thread! I happened upon it by searching again for a gluten-free bakery in Idaho.

My son, who is 14, has this too. We are new to all of it too. I do not of a restaurant in Meridian, Saw-wa-dee. They get customers all of the time with celiac. They will take care of you. Hope this helps.

      Navigating medication safety with Celiac disease can be incredibly stressful, especially when dealing with asthma and severe allergies on top of it. While I don't have personal experience with the HealthA2Z brand of cetirizine, your caution is absolutely warranted. The inactive ingredients in pills, known as excipients, are often where gluten can be hidden, and since the FDA does not require gluten-free labeling for prescription or over-the-counter drugs, the manufacturer's word is essential. The fact that you cannot get a clear answer from Allegiant Health is a significant red flag; a company that is confident its product is gluten-free will typically have a customer service protocol to answer that exact question. In situations like this, the safest course of action is to consider this product "guilty until proven innocent" and avoid it. A better alternative would be to ask your pharmacist or doctor to help you identify a major national brand of cetirizine (like Zyrtec) whose manufacturer has a verified, publicly stated gluten-free policy for that specific medication. It's not worth the risk to your health when reliable, verifiable options are almost certainly available to you. You can search this site for USA prescriptions medications, but will need to know the manufacturer/maker if there is more than one, especially if you use a generic version of the medication: To see the ingredients you will need to click on the correct version of the medication and maker in the results, then scroll down to "Ingredients and Appearance" and click it, and then look at "Inactive Ingredients," as any gluten ingredients would likely appear there, rather than in the Active Ingredients area. https://dailymed.nlm.nih.gov/dailymed/

      What you're describing is indeed familiar to many in the Celiac community, especially in the early stages of healing. When the intestinal villi are damaged from Celiac disease, they struggle to properly digest and absorb fats, a condition known as bile acid malabsorption. This can cause exactly the kind of cramping and spasms you're seeing, as undigested fats can irritate the sensitive gut lining. It is highly plausible that her reactions to dairy and eggs are linked to their higher fat content rather than the proteins, especially since she tolerates lean chicken breast. The great news is that for many, this does improve with time. As her gut continues to heal on a strict gluten-free diet, her ability to produce the necessary enzymes and bile to break down fats should gradually return, allowing her to slowly tolerate a wider variety of foods. It's a slow process of healing, but your careful approach of focusing on low-fat, nutrient-dense foods like seeds and avocado is providing her system the best possible environment to recover. Many people with celiac disease, especially those who are in the 0-2 year range of their recovery, have additional food intolerance issues which could be temporary. To figure this out you may need to keep a food diary and do an elimination diet over a few months. Some common food intolerance issues are dairy/casein, eggs, corn, oats, and soy. The good news is that after your gut heals (for most people who are 100% gluten-free this will take several months to two years) you may be able to slowly add some these items back into your diet after the damaged villi heal.       I had a very rough month after diagnosis. No exaggeration, lost so much inflammatory weight, I looked like a bag of bones, underneath i had been literally starving to death. I did start feeling noticeably better after a month of very strict control of my kitchen and home. What are you eating for breakfast and lunch? I ignored my doc and ate oats, yes they were gluten free, but some brands are at the higher end of gluten free. Lots of celics can eat Bob's Red Mill gluten-free oats, but not me. I can now eat them, but they have to be grown and processed according to the "purity protocol" methods. I mail order them, Montana Gluten-Free brand. A food and symptoms and activities log can be helpful in tracking down issues. You might be totally aware, but I have to mention about the risk of airborne gluten. As the doc that diagnosed me warned . . Remember eyes, ears, nose, and mouth all lead to your stomach and intestines.  Are you getting any cross contamination? Airborne gluten? Any pets eating gluten (they eat it, lick themselves, you pet them...)? Any house remodeling? We live in an older home, always fixing something. I've gotten glutened from the dust from cutting into plaster walls, possibly also plywood (glues). The suggestions by many here on vitamin supplements also really helped me. I had some lingering allergies and asthma, which are now 99% gone. I was taking Albuterol inhaler every hour just to breathe, but thiamine in form of benfotiamine kicked that down to 1-2 times a day within a few days of starting it. Also, since cutting out inflammatory seed oils (canola, sunflower, grapeseed, etc) and cooking with real olive oil, avocado oil, ghee, and coconut oil, I have noticed even greater improvement overall and haven't used the inhaler in months! It takes time to weed out everything in your life that contains gluten, and it takes awhile to heal and rebuild your health. At first it's mentally exhausting, overwhelming, even obsessive, but it gets better and second nature.
