What The Heck? I Am So Clumsy Now!

I have been gluten free for about two weeks strictly and I feel better and worse I guess. Or different anyway. I haven't had any running to the bathroom episodes which is a definate plus! I have had some gas here and there and one day of horrible nausea and stuck burps, but chances are I got glutened somewhere along the line. I need to learn to keep my fingers out of my mouth! My main concern though is that I am even more "foggy" than before. Not neccessarily in the memory department which has always been a problem, but more with balance. Last couple days I have been running into everything. I mean I ran into the door jamb walking down the hall. I have bruises all over my thighs from running into stuff. It's like my depth perception is off. Do you think it could be just that I am tired from adjusting to the new diet. Something to do with carbs maybe? Why am I such a klutz? :huh:

I have had neurological symptoms for a long time. I have been gluten free for over 5 months now and still only have one or two days here and there without balance problems, facial and limb numbness. I was thinking it was accidental glutening, which it may have been, but there is alot of the time I am sure I have not come into contact with it. From what I have researched, it takes time for it to go away. Did you have problems with this before going gluten free?

I did read here on the forum the other day that one persons neurologist said that when gluten is taken away, the body does react neurologically as well as the other things and to be patient.

I have considered padding the walls and floor at times! LOL!

I have also read so much about gluten "ataxia" I could write a book. (this is what I have)

Many people that are "gluten sensitive" rather than "celiac" are more prone to neurological problems. And yes, it does affect the eyes very much so. I have the depth perception problems along with eye twitching in the eye balls and other visual disturbances. I hate it. It all combined makes me feel like I am going to fall or pass out at any given time. It is very hard to work that way.

I just expected it all to go away over night when I went gluten free. I am having a hard time waiting it out without getting discouraged and constantly checking things to see if I have slipped. I totally understand the clumsiness! Hang in there.

There are some supplements which can really help. Vitamin B12, magnesium, B-complex, omega-3s, and probably a few other things. I'd highly recommend a sublingual methylcobalamin for the B12, and magnesium citrate is said to be fairly effectively absorbed too.

Also, there can be other things to which your body is reacting, now that gluten is out of the way. You may want to look into the top allergens, including dairy, soy, corn, nuts, etc.

I too was clumsy, walking into walls, etc. and Vitamin B12 shots and the methycobalamin really helped.

I am taking magnesium, Non Flushing Niacin, 60 mcg vit. B 12, vitamin D, Flax Oil and a multi vitamin and enzymes for digestion. I haven't eaten soy in years (allergic) and recently gave up all other grains except rice. I have been allergic to some legumes for years and now have cross-reactivity with all legumes, so gave them all up. I did not show a dairy problem with the test and have limited night shades. Not too much left to go. I eat extremly healthy now. I just can't seem to kick the problems yet, but I know it takes time. I try to only have a potato once a week. I even gave up all the flour mixes due to the starches! Basically, the only mix I use is Pamela's Pancake mix for pancakes, cookies and cakes. I use only sugar made from cane and not much of it.

      You might consider asking for a referral to a RD (Registered Dietician) to help with food choices and planning a diet. Even apart from any gluten issues, you will likely find there are some foods you need to avoid because of the shorter bowel but you may also find that your system may make adjustments over time and that symptoms may improve.

      Losing 12" of your small bowel is going to present challenges for you in nutritional uptake because you are losing a significant amount of nutritional absorption surface area. You will need to focus on consuming foods that are nutritionally dense and also probably look at some good supplements. If indeed you are having issues with gluten you will need to educate yourself as to how gluten is hidden in the food supply. There's more to it than just avoiding the major sources of gluten like bread and pasta. It is hidden in so many things you would never expect to find it in like canned tomato soup and soy sauce just to name a few. It can be in pills and medications.  Also, your "yellow diarrhea, constipation and bloating" though these are classic signs of a gluten disorder, could also be related to the post surgical shorter length of your small bowel causing incomplete processing/digestion of food.

      There are two gluten-related disorders that share many of the same symptoms but differ in nature from each other. One is known as celiac disease or "gluten intolerance". By nature, it is an autoimmune disorder, meaning the ingestion of gluten triggers the body to attack it's own tissues, specifically the lining of the small bowel. This attack causes inflammation and produces antibodies that can be detected in the blood by specific tests like the TTG-IGA test you had. Over time, if gluten is not withheld, this inflammation can cause severe damage to the lining of the small bowel and even result in nutrient deficiency related health issues since the small bowel lining is organ where all the nutrition found in our food is absorbed.  The other is NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity or just "gluten sensitivity") which we know less about and are unsure of the exact mechanism of action. It is not an autoimmune disorder and unlike celiac disease it does not damage the lining of the small bowel, though, like celiac disease, it can cause GI distress and it can also do other kinds of damage to the body. It is thought to be more common than celiac disease. Currently, we cannot test for NCGS. Celiac disease must first be ruled out to arrive at a diagnosis of NCGS. Both disorders require elimination of gluten from the diet.  Either of these disorders can find their onset at any stage of life. We know that celiac disease has a genetic component but the genes are inactive until awakened by some stress event. About 40% of the general population has the genetic potential to develop celiac disease but only about 1% develop active celiac disease. The incidence of NCGS is thought to be considerably higher.
