Dizzy Spells And Feeling Sick

Hi, My daughter has been gluten free since last May. Recently she has been complaining of dizzy spells and often complains that she is feeling sick. This sick feeling goes away as soon as she eats. The dizzy spells were especially bad on a night she went roller skating and there was a strobe light on.

Just wondering if anyone else has come across something like before. I have an appointment booked with her pediatrician, but I can't get in until April.

Thanks for the help!

I feel that way when my blood sugar gets too low or I'm dehydrated. Is that a possiblity?

Could she have low blood sugar? I am borderline hypoglycemic and when my blood sugar gets too low I get nauseated and dizzy.

I third the hypoglycemia suggestion.

The advice a friend got from her Doctor for her daughter was to give her a well balanced snack every two hours or so. It elimated the sick tummy, dizzy spells and the headaches she was getting.

The low blood sugar was the direction I was thinking too, I'll try the snacks every two hours and see if that helps and also try upping her water intake.

Thanks for the feedback!

Has your daughter had her eyes checked lately? Does she get blurry vision, headaches, see lights, or have ear issues? Ear problems (like fluid or wax build-up) can be extra problematic for celiac because of the prevalance of vertigo symptoms for some. Vision can play a role in the neuro. side effects. Ask her if she feels dizzy when she turns her head quickly or uses the computer--this can be caused by optic nerve issues.

Although it is my child, not me, that has tested positive for celiac (I'm still waiting for my test results), I personally have had dizziness and nausea since I was a very young girl. Now, as an adult, I have vertigo that gets worse by the year and get migraine auras (scintillating scotoma) that involve flashing lights and sizzling fractured crescents that grow through my field of vision. If I were to watch a strobe light, I would surely have a migraine aura from it. I remember what it was like as a kid to get dizzy spells--I could never find the right way to explain it to my parents, but I always felt sick when it happened. Hope you find out soon what's going on.

Celiac disease requires both genetic potential and a triggering stress event to activate the genes. Otherwise it remains dormant and only a potential problem. So having the genetic potential is not deterministic for celiac disease. Many more people have the genes than actually develop the disease. But if you don't have the genes, the symptoms are likely being caused by something else.

Yes, i pulled raw ancetry data and saw i have 2/3 markers for DQ2.2 but have heard from friends in genetics that this raw data can be wildly innacurate

Thanks, I’m still dealing with the pain and tingling and itching and feeling like bugs or something crawling around on my face and scalp. It’s been a miserable experience. I saw my eye doc last week, the eye itself was okay, so they didn’t do anything. I did take a 7 day course of an antiviral. I’m hoping for a turnaround soon! My life is full of stress but I have been on / off the gluten free diet for the last year , after being talked into going back on gluten to have a biopsy, that looked okay. But I do have positive antibody levels that have been responsive  to a gluten free diet. I can’t help but wonder if the last year has caused all this.

I don't think any apps are up to date, which is exactly why this happened to you. Most of the data in such apps is years old, and it doesn't get updated in real time. Ultimately there is no substitution for learning to read labels. The following two lists are very helpful for anyone who is gluten sensitive and needs to avoid gluten when shopping. It's very important to learn to read labels and understand sources of hidden gluten, and to know some general information about product labelling--for example in the USA if wheat is a possible allergen it must be declared on a product's ingredient label like this: Allergens: Wheat.

What is the best gluten free scanner app? I have the "gluten-free Scanner" app. I scanned an almond joy and it says it contains gluten when the package is labeled gluten free
