Gluten Free Pantry Vs Pamelas

My local store carries quite a few items by Gluten Free Pantry... and Pamelas. Which do you recommend?? I'm mainly interested in a cake or brownie mix.... and a general baking mix (like, to replace "flour"). Pam's was a bit more expensive. Is it worth the extra money?

AS for the cake mix... I am a chocoholic.... and a self-proclaimed chocolate conniseiur (spelled wrong, for sure). I can easily taste the difference between "real chocolate", and the cheap brown stuff that is just called chocolate. If any of you are chocolate experts, please mention that in your response - it would be good to know. :) Thanks!

LOL! I consider myself to be a chocolate aficionado and my personal preference when it comes to chocolate is Pamela's brownie mix, mainly because it has extra chunks of chocolate in it and when I serve it to non celiacs they CAN'T tell the difference! When it comes to baking mixes pancake mixes and such I actually prefer 1-2-3 Gluten Free's mixes... The lady that started this company is a perfectionist, and she won't put out a product unless it's absolutely perfect! I absolutely love the Buckwheat Pancake Mix, The Southern Glory Biscuit Mix, and Aarons Favorite Rolls

Yes--for brownies mixes, Pamela's...

Arrowhead Mills has some very good mixes, including a choc. chip cookie. Just be careful because some are gluten-free and some aren't.

My favorite choc. cake mix is from Dietary Specialties ~ VERY good!! I have their brownie mix but have not tried it yet. I love Gluten Free Pantries sandwich bread mix if you are looking for that item as well. Good luck!

My favorite brownie mix..... HANDS down is Gluten free pantry. Pamela's is good too and I buy it the most... one it's cheaper and two my local Kroger carries it and I don't have to go out of my way.

I use the one that makes more. One makes a small pan and the other a 9 x 13. They both taste good but mroe is better, no?

Another vote for gluten free pantry chocolate truffle brownie mix. I buy it in bulk the 5lb bag!! :D My family loves it!! They always steal my brownies when I take them to their house. I smother them in milk chocolate frosting mmmmmm

They also make a mean brownie sundae after being put into the microwave for about 20 seconds and drop some icecream ontop of them.

Also recently tried a suggestion from this board, melted a large box of junior mints onto the brownies. However I went one step further. I went ahead and put frosting on them also!! HOLEY COW SOOOOo good!!

Lol  ....a humorous way to look at it, but true

I have a bag of the Chocolate Truffle Brownie Mix. I was going to make them with my son this week, but now I will have to buy the Junior Mints and try it that way. Sounds fantastic. So does the Brownie Sundae! Thanks for the tips!

Jessica, do you cook the brownies and then spread the junior mints on while it cools. It seems to me that this would be sufficient to let them melt, but it also sounds good if you stir them in the mix and bake them right in! :D I love brownies!

God bless,

Mariann

Wow! I'm drooooling!!! So many good comments and suggestions! Thanks everyone! I made the plunge today, by the way. I've been really really sick for the last few weeks - to the point that i've become this irritable crabby *itch. I've even been getting violent the last few days - hoping someone will give me an excuse to kill them. My precious little 3 yr old said somethign to me today that made me realize just how out of hand it was getting. SOOO... when I went grocery shopping, i shopped gluten-free!!! It was surprisingly easy! Except that I did get a few things that I wasn't sure about. Sodium phosphate? good or bad? Ate a gluten-free dinner. Threw out the donuts. I can't wait to feel better!!! At least now I have hope!

What I did when I made them was when they were cooked, I immediately dumped the box onto the brownies as soon as they came out of the oven. They melted onto the browies then cooled. Then I spread frosting over all of that. mmmm

Both brands are really good. When I make the brownies, I put the batter into the pan and then I take raspberry jelly and swirl it into the batter. You have to cook it for another 5-10 minutes. But it is so worth it.

Hey @Butch68, I also have dermatitis herpetiformis but don't suffer from it anymore. I used to drink Guinness too but I drink Cider now when out on social occasions. I assume you are in Ireland or the UK. If it's any good to you ... 9 White Deer based in Cork brew a range of gluten-free products including a gluten-free Stout. I'm not sure if they are certified though. https://www.9whitedeer.ie/ I haven't come across any certified gluten-free stouts this side of the pond.

This is a very common question, and the most important thing to know is that no, Guinness is not considered safe for individuals with coeliac disease. While it's fascinating to hear anecdotes from other coeliacs who can drink it without immediate issues, this is a risky exception rather than the rule. The core issue is that Guinness is brewed from barley, which contains gluten, and the standard brewing process does not remove the gluten protein to a level safe for coeliacs (below 20ppm). For someone like you who experiences dermatitis herpetiformis, the reaction is particularly significant. DH is triggered by gluten ingestion, even without immediate gastrointestinal symptoms. So, while you may not feel an instant stomach upset, drinking a gluten-containing beer like Guinness could very well provoke a flare-up of your skin condition days later. It would be a gamble with a potentially uncomfortable and long-lasting consequence. Fortunately, there are excellent, certified gluten-free stouts available now that can provide a safe and satisfying alternative without the risk.

Interestingly, this thought occurred to me last night. I did find that there are studies investigating whether vitamin D deficiency can actually trigger celiac disease.  Source: National Institutes of Health https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC7231074/

Before being diagnosed coeliac I used to love Guinness. Being made from barley it should be something a coeliac shouldn’t drink. But taking to another coeliac and they can drink it with no ill effects and have heard of others who can drink it too.  is this everyone’s experience?  Can I drink it?  I get dermatitis herpetiformis and don’t get instant reactions to gluten so can’t try it to see for myself.

NCGS does not cause damage to the small bowel villi so, if indeed you were not skimping on gluten when you had the antibody blood testing done, it is likely you have celiac disease.
