Just Starting Diet. Lot's Of Abdominal Pain. Normal?

I've been fighting Lyme disease for about 2 years now. Doing somewhat better and working on mopping up other associated issues. About 3 months ago I was tested for Celiacs (blood test) and came back positive. I never really had any noticeable symptoms, but doc suggested gluten-free diet so I've been slowly working on it.

I'm down to the point where I've cut out all of the obvious sources and most of the secondary sources of gluten and go days without any exposure. When I do eat some it's usually by accident or because I didn't plan well (away from my gluten-free kitchen longer than expected).

I feel that my energy level is up and am enjoying the fact that, even though I've always been a healthy eater, I'm now eating better than ever. However, over the last week or so I've been getting these painful aches and pains in my abdominal area. The come and go for seemingly no reason. I don't think they are gas because I don't feel bloated. They're particularly bad right after eating

I get abdominal pain and cramping if I eat alternative grains. Since I've cut back on the grains, I'm doing well. I tolerate rice and corn the best but eat a little rice in a week and very little corn. I'm not eating any rice flour at all. I'm not eating the other flours either. Are you eating grains a lot?

Lots of grains? Not really, but some

If I ate 2-3 servings of grains like you do daily, I would be back to the pain I used to feel. Your pain could be caused by another reason, but you could lay off grains for a week and see how you feel.

Other symptoms that Celiac Disease can cause but resemble other diseases so the cause may be misdiagnosed. What Are the Symptoms of Celiac Disease?

Thanks Scott. They are gluten-free but cross contaminated.

Hi there @MCAyr I have a small umbilical hernia which came about during my second pregnancy.   I can just about see it, and feel it, when I stand or sit, but it is far less noticeable when I lie down.  I always know when I am putting on weight because I can get pain and burning near the site, funnily enough not on the hernia itself but either side!  I would imagine bloating could cause the same effect as weight gain. In my case I don't think it is my bowel protruding but a bit of fat  - sorry,  I realise this isn't painting a very pretty picture.  But in truth it is scarcely noticeable.  It has never really got bigger in size. I was rather hoping that it could be operated on but here in the UK they don't seem to operate on every hernia anymore.  My GP isn't remotely worried about it. In a way, I should be thankful - it is like an early warning system that I need to go on a diet! Cristiana

The hernia description would likely be unrelated to celiac disease, but you'd need to get it checked out by your doctor to be sure it's a hernia.
