Need Some Clarification

I have just been diagnosed with a gluten allergy. The doctor didn't do anything but a blood test and told me I had celiac disease. So, in researching in the last week, I've come across a few questions.

My doctor gave me a list of ingredients to look out for, one being monosodium glutamate. Everything I am reading online it is saying I can have that. It makes since that I can't eat that being that it has "glut" in it, but I want to be sure either way.

Another question I have is when am I gonna start feeling better. It is absolutely amazing to me the things that people are saying about the way the feel. I am so excited to enjoy my husband and children again, remember what fun is without worrying about where the bathroom is.....Just looking for a little guidance. In reading about this I am alittle disappointed with my doctor because he hasn't explained alot of things to me. Thanks for all the post that are on there already, just reading this makes me feel like Im not alone, when sometimes I feel I am. Im only less than a week into this and have gone through so much I didn't expect. My doctor didn't tell me anything about the withdrawl, but my gosh have I had it. I woke up one morning very dizzy and shaky, and Im feeling more irritable lately. But, I've also already had more energy. Thanks for any help anyone can give me, its much appriciated!

Glad you found out what your problem was.

There's no way to tell how long it will take for you to feel better, but a rough guess based on my personal experience would be a month.

I would avoid MSG regardless of worrying about your celiac. Don't fall into eating junky food, thinking that it's good just because it's gluten free. Having celiac disease helps me to eat healthier because so much junk food is wheat based.

If you're looking for something that can help with diarrhea, I had awesome results within a day of taking Digestive Advantage for IBS.

MSG has no direct effect on celiac as far as I have been able to find out. The Glutamate in MSG is derived from sugar beet skins and not glutin or gliatin.

That said, I avoid MSG like the plague because it triggers migraines in my particular case.

You will find more information here on this site than you ever will from a doctor. All of us have personal experience and doctors only know what they read or have been taught (unless, of course, they themselves are Celiacs). Keep reading and researching every site you can find.

You have worse than an allergy. You have an autoimmune disorder. This is a very important thing to remember when you are tempted to cheat. Your body sees gluten as poison and is literally destroying your intestines to prevent absorption of it. If you get tempted to cheat just remember a little bit of gluten is like eating a little bit of glass.

      Hi,  My 7 year daughter has complained of this in the past, which I thought were part of her glutening symptom, but more recently I have come to figure out it's part of her histamine overload symptom. This one symptom was part of her broader profile, which included irritability, extreme hunger, confusion, post-nasal drip. You might want to look up "histamine intolerance". I wish I had known of this at the time of her diagnosis, life would have been much easier.  I hope you are able to figure out.

      My 5yo was diagnosed with celiac last year by being tested after his sister was diagnosed. We are very strict on the gluten-free diet, but unsure what his reactions are as he was diagnosed without many symptoms other than low ferritin.  He had a school party where his teacher made gluten-free gingerbread men. I almost said no because she made it in her kitchen but I thought it would be ok.  Next day and for a few after his behavior is awful. Hitting, rude, disrespectful. Mainly he kept saying his legs were shaking. Is this a gluten exposure symptom that anyone else gets? Also the bad behavior?

      Not necessarily. The "Gluten Free" label means not more than 20ppm of gluten in the product which is often not enough for super sensitive celiacs. You would need to be looking for "Certified Gluten Free" (GFCO endorsed) which means no more than 10ppm of gluten. Having said that, "Gluten Free" doesn't mean that there will necessarily be more gluten than "Certified Gluten" in any given batch run. It just means there could be.

      I think it is wise to seek a second opinion from a GI doc and to go on a gluten free diet in the meantime. The GI doc may look at all the evidence, including the biopsy report, and conclude you don't need anything else to reach a dx of celiac disease and so, there would be no need for a gluten challenge. But if the GI doc does want to do more testing, you can worry about the gluten challenge at that time. But between now and the time of the appointment, if your symptoms improve on a gluten free diet, that is more evidence. Just keep in mind that if a gluten challenge is called for, the bare minimum challenge length is two weeks of the daily consumption of at least 10g of gluten, which is about the amount found in 4-6 slices of wheat bread. But, I would count on giving it four weeks to be sure.
