Need To Talk About Oatmeal

On the suggestion of my health food specialist (whose husband is a celiac vegan---but does not do oats) we thought maybe organic oats that are produced in a facility that only produces oats would be o.k. for me. I have tried them from time to time, and I think they give me a tummy ache and make me have some diarreah. I always thought the problem with oats was only that they were being contaminated in places that have wheat around and that oats were o.k. for gluten-free people if they were pure. I just LOVE oatmeal and see it as a good way to get some whole grain and fiber, but not at the cost of a tummy ache and diarreah. What do you think?

Barbara

Well there is a protein called avenin in oats(similar to that of the protein gliadin) and some celiacs can't tolerate oats because of this protein, not just because of contamination....maybe you were reacting to oats in itself if they were made in a facility that only does oats?

exactly what Kaiti said. the studies on oats have a small, but fairly consistent number of folks who drop out or see damage on the diagnostic tests when eating oats - even ones grown specifically in a lab to be uncontaminated.

Isn't there also a concern about where the oats are grown - cross contamination in the field, not just the processing facility?

I keep toying with the idea of having oats but I'm just not willing enough to risk it.

Generally speaking, oats can be contaminated in the field, in harvesting, during transportation or storage, or during processing. Lots of ways.

OHDARNIT---and they tasted so good too. I definitely had a reaction to them. Thanks for the info all of you. Just bought a bag of them, but being it was less than $1.50 as they were packed in bulk, so no great loss. I just hate that fact that I can't eat them though. Barbara

Many years ago yes, after eating and going to bed, apparently my esophagus filled with food that my body rejected, the esophagus would lay against the Heart sack (pericardium?) and the heart would respond by becoming arrhythmic. That went away with the strict diet.

I was commenting on the report saying it did not mention migraines! Yes it does last paragraph says have not seen any evidence that Celiac cause migraines! I thought this was about truth?

It has been known for some years that celiacs suffer from migraines at a higher rate than the general populatation. It is an established symptom.
